Year 2005 saw Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan giving some memorable performances in films and also making a comeback to the small screen in a new 'cool' avatar on his show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati 2'.

Even at the age of sixty-three, Mr. Bachchan continues to surprise everyone. Last year, he faced a lot of flak from critics for making cameo appearances in films just because producers wanted to make their movies more saleable. This year, Bachchan played leading roles in good number of films and proved yet again his mettle as an actor.

For Bachchan, the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movie Black was a momentous occasion. The film starred him as an eccentric teacher of a blind-deaf-mute girl (played by Rani Mukherjee ). The movie, particularly the performances by Bachchan and Rani, got plaudits from critics and audiences alike. With his intense and meticulous portrayal of an aging teacher in the movie, Bachchan stretched his acting skills to a new high. After all, it was not for nothing that Shah Rukh Khan , the other much-hailed superstar of Bollywood, touched Bachchan's feet after the movie's premiere in Mumbai.

If 'Black' had Bachchan in a serious, intense role, Shaad Ali's Bunty Aur Babli saw him playing a stylish cop who smokes bidis and follows his own unique modus operandi to nail down criminals.

The year also saw Amitabh for the first time in a Ram Gopal Varma film. Sarkar , Ramu's tribute to Francis Ford Coppola's 'The Godfather' had Bachchan playing an authoritarian, influential and god-fatherly figure. The movie got critical acclaim and also raked in good money at the box-office.

In fact, Ramu has now got two more films with Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan – 'Sarkar 2' and 'Sholay' remake.

One cameo that Bachchan played this year was in Shah Rukh Khan's Paheli . In the film, Bachchan comes at the fag end of the story. He plays a Rajasthani shepherd who solves the riddle that is crucial to the story's culmination.

Another Bachchan-starrer that enjoyed a good run at the box-office was Waqt – A Race Against Time .

There were also disappointments like Dil Jo Bhi Kahey and Viruddh . But the most shocking is the fate of Apoorva Lakhia's Ek Ajnabee that has Bachchan in the role of an angry man hunting down kidnappers.

Despite the downers, Bachchan indisputably emerges as the most successful star of year 2005 with his films generating estimated revenue of over Rs 1 billion for the distributors.

Even on the small screen, the Bachchan-hosted show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati 2' became the most watched game show. The revived version of the show has a slightly different format and has Amitabh in a new avatar of a cool host, dressed in leathers and denims.

And if there was still any doubt about Bachchan's supremacy, it was cleared when the entire nation prayed for his well being when he fell sick with an intestine infection in November and had to undergo surgery.

Nowadays, Mr. Bachchan is resting at home. But rest assured, it wouldn't be long when he returns to action. The coming year would see more memorable performances by him.
