@bold: Apparently so. It's not like post-partum psychosis is 'real' or anything. These women just happen to decide to kill their kids because hey, why the hell not? And all the unscrupulous lawyers in the world unite to bail them out by using the insanity "defense". Let's conveniently ignore that most judicial systems don't even consider insanity a defense - it's a mitigating factor for crying out loud and the defense cannot solely be based on it.
Now, is it plausible that there are a few people out there who use their disorder to excuse their behavior? Sure but then, you can't generalize a minority to be the rule. Think of it as the same concept as innocent until proven guilty. If a person is using a behavioural disorder as an excuse, there is very little one can do to make them stop. If they aren't, then you've just been inexplicably cruel to someone who already has enough problems to work through.
On a side note, some people here are defining the fundamental attribution error -- fine with over-valuing personality-based explanation when assessing other's actions while ignoring situational factors that they would consider if they were the ones whose actions were being assessed. All that social psych 'gibberish' is surprisingly accurate at defining human behaviour. :P

Oh, and I can't remember who in the 29+ pages said this but Koena isn't deserving of sympathy because she hasn't done much for society. And while I don't particularly care if one sympathizes with Koena, I must ask: what have people who are poor or malnutrioned done for society at large that they are worthy of sympathy? I don't mean that as an entirely derisive remark but I really don't understand the concept - to be worthy of sympathy, you have to do something for society? 😕
(a) nobody really generalized it as a laughable concept or the concept in the west... cases of depression are everywhere in the world... but mostly in the west, even the most trivial of cases are used as excuses and exaggerated than what the situation actually is... that does not mean there are no genuine cases, and certainly that was never impled... but of course, handing out labels and making accusations seems to be part and parcel of the discussion...! 😛😛😛😛
(b) would you have still disagreed with the namecalling if that wasn't made an issue out of...? 😛😛😛 not that i am accusing you, but i'm quite curious....!
(c) she did get bail, and all she has to do is go for regular check-ups... i'm not sure what other conditions were there... i have only heard of the case, not attended the hearing myself...! 😛 the point was, that there are cases where people use such excuses, and many times, they are considered for therapy and what not, even if it is not required...! that does not imply there are no genuine cases, because let's face it, there obviously are, hence there are doctors for such things...!!
(d) the discussion does not need to be personal...! 😛😛😛 and nowhere in the discussions were any members of the forum implied... or are people incapable of having a civilized discussion...? 😛😛😛
(e) all that psych lecture, went over my head... so if you want to use normal english, that would be great... otherwise, i'll have to start answering in farsi... 😛😉
(f) let people make their own conclusions on whom they will have sympathy with... i'm sorry but i don't feel sorry for rich people who are depressed over the most minor of things gone wrong in their life... there are bigger problems in the world... to some, their problems are the biggest in the world.. that's fine... it's their opinion, but that does not dictate that everyone needs to follow the same train of thought...!! 😛😛😛😛
