Also like I said before ppl in the South are huge Rajnikant fans, but he doesn't have a strong fan-follwoing maybe zilch in the north so totally expected a slow response in north and other places!!! Why would someone go to a theatre at 5am to watch a Rajinikanth movie? Because tickets were not available for the 4am show. Chennai shut shop early on Thursday over worries on which way the Ayodhya verdict would swing, but now it seems it was only to queue up before daybreak for the first day, first show of ' Enthiran (Robot)'.

Thousands jostled for an elusive ticket as theatres in Rajini city began screening the film on Friday before the crack of dawn. While the first show at the city's Rakki Cinemas in Ambattur was at 4am, it was at 5.45am at the AGS Cinemas in Villivakkam and 6 am at Kasi Theatre. Even national exhibitors like PVR cinemas and Inox began shows in Chennai around 8am. Tickets were reportedly being sold in the black market at up to Rs 5,000 each.

Even in Mumbai, Bollywood took a backseat as thousands of Rajini worshippers lined up outside Aurora theatre where prints of the film were brought after being taken to a temple in a chariot.

The movie looks set to smash box-office records. Shyam Shroff, its Bombay territory distributor says, "It will collect double its cost of production" (at Rs 160 crore, it's India's most expensive movie). Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, "Sivaji made Rs 200 crore, Robot will cross that."

Confirms A Anup, vice president (operations) of Fun cinemas, Bangalore, '"With 100% collections across India, Enthiran (Tamil version) is ready to break all records. The Hindi version has taken a slow start but should pick up through sheer word of mouth."
Rajinikanth fans keen to celebrate the latest release 'Endhiran (Robot)' were willing to go to any length. "I woke up at 2.45am to reach the theatre well in time for the 4am show," said Chennai's K Surya Kumar, 27, comparing the experience to a pilgrimage. Others travelled even longer distances to catch the sci-fi extravaganza, billed as the most expensive film ever made in India.

Arvind Akshay, 25, an acquisitions manager with Citibank in Bangalore, came in to watch it, in the land of Rajini at Chennai's Albert theatre, which he claims is the 'mecca' of Rajini fans. Akshay is planning to watch the film 12 times in two days. Reports also came in of Rajini fans flying down from Mumbai to Chennai to catch the film.

Dr S Natrajan, one of Mumbai's busiest eye surgeons, took a break from his schedule to watch the film. "I am a huge Rajinikanth fan and I always watch his films first day, first show at Aurora," said the doctor, adding that both Rajini and his leading lady Aishwarya Rai have pledged their eyes.

At Chennai's Albert theatre, a group of insurance surveyors, who call themselves the Robot Friends, arrived sporting black and white T-shirts with a still of Rajini printed on them. They burst long garlands of firecrackers before walking into the hall. "We placed an order for these T-shirts two months ago," said Baba APS, a member of the group.

lol no it wasn't meant as an offence! The reason I used "what" was because I've never seen this kinda crowd for any movie, and I had no idea Rajni had that kinda star power. The "what" kinda emphasizes on his star power.

Oh ok, sorry I misinterpreted it. So, Finally had a chance to go today to see endhiran wow...what an experience. I must say full kudos to director shankar for having such a unique creative masterpiece. Never before seen script and story....and the execution was just mindblowing.
Rajini what can I say...perfect. I was wondering how would a movie without all the typical "rajini" moves would be but wow, he has done complete justice to it , be it the geek scientist, the robot or the devious robot....just perfect. His villainous act is a treat to watch. Not many know this but rajini started his career as a villain and that too a very sadistic cunning ones and excelled in it. I could see shades of that in this.
Ash, Never was a big fan of her infact dislike her except for her dancing but this movie...she looked divine and sooo gorgeous. No wonder even a robot fell for her. Her dance moves were too good . Overall she played her part and looked hot. Good that she put on some weight, she looks better now
visuals and graphics were just worls class. Even with sucha concept, shankar's movie will appeal to all from masses to class....great imagination and perfect execution. Well worth the money

Box Office Report ' October 3

I Am Not a Robot ' or Not

The uber-ballyhooed The Social Network buzzed above the pack with an estimated $22.6 million to lead weekend ticket sales. Two other national releases proved commercial disappointments. The much-admired horror remake Let Me In ranked seventh overall with $5.3 million and the thriller Case 39 was a peg behind with $5.2 million.

The big noise for the frame came from new regional and niche titles. The Tamil language Robots (the most expensive film ever produced in India) rewrote the record books with the biggest ever North American debut with a $2.1 million tally. The simultaneous release of Anjaana Anjaani from Bollywood's Hindi sector was also impressive with a $560,000 bow. In Canada, the Brit import StreetDance 3D generated a hefty $423,000 and the indigenous Fubar II rang up $209,000 from just 30 venues.

However, a couple of indie horror entries failed to ignite pre-Halloween frenzy. Chain Letter eked out a $300 average from 401 screens and Hatchet II was marginally better with an $880 average from a more contained 68 playdates.

Overall business experienced a roll back from both the prior weekend and 2009 revenues.

Critical response to The Social Network was predominantly rapturous. Still, media reports detailed concerns based on tracking and previews that the flamboyant saga of Facebook and its youthful creators was a tough sell. Exit polls showed that opening weekend skewed slightly female with 53% of the audience and plus 25s comprised 55% of sales. Trackers had predicted grossed in the range of $25 million to $28 million and its clear that its future rests on playing the awards card and eventually drawing in younger viewers obviously spending too much time on the net to go see the movie.

Let Me In also received enthusiastic thumbs ups from reviewers that failed to translate at the box office. Prognosticators pushed its envelope to the $10 million to $12 million strata but ticket buyers opted to catch up with The Town, Easy A or the Wall Street sequel. Case 39, which opened internationally in late 2008 and has grossed more than $10 million overseas, arrived as a theatrical afterthought and performed more or less as expected ' blah.

Weekend sales came up just short of $100 million, which amounted to a 3% decline from seven days earlier. 2009 comparisons saw a steeper erosion of 9%. A year ago the debuts of Zombieland and the 3D pairing of Toy Story's first two installments ranked first and third with respective openings of $24.7 million and $12.5 million.

Robot, with echoes of Metropolis, is a more optimistic yarn of a scientist who creates an android in his own image and watches the somewhat amusing results unfold. The big budget production went full out with dubbed versions in Hindi and Telegu in addition to the Tamil original. The largely Indian diasporas came out in force to generate a record opening box office. Still, despite considerable efforts in the past five years, the Indian cinema is just one film short of producing a crossover mainstream hit.

The session didn't include a new platform in what looks like a crowded, eclectic awards season. However a clutch of early entries including Never Let Me Go, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and Catfish added dates and continued to keep a foot in the door. Only Jack Goes Boating appears to have run out of steam early.
