I Hate Luv Stories Movie Review - INDICINE

I Hate Luv Stories directed by Punit Malhotra (nephew of costume designer Manish Malhotra) is a take on some of the most popular love stories that you have seen. The promos were fresh and clicked big time with the audience, the music too was very popular and the film has immense buzz surrounding. Quite obvious since the film is produced under one of Bollywood's most reputed production houses, Dharma Productions. The film stars Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor.

I Hate Luv Stories is about Jay (Imran Khan) and Simran (Sonam Kapoor). Jay basically hates love stories and for Simran its all about love stories. Both work in Bollywood, Simran is an art director, while Jay is an assistant director to Veer (Samir Sony), who is one of the most famous romantic directors in the Indian film industry. Unfortunately for Jay, he has to live in this world of love and unrealistic larger than life characters.
Simran is engaged to the man of her dreams, Raj (Sameer Dattani), who is well, Raj straight out of DDLJ. But the film isn't about Raj and Simran here, as Jay's dislike towards love soon becomes one of the main reasons for the two – Jay and Simran – to fall in love.

What works for I Hate Luv Stories

First off, Punit Malhotra is a director to watch out for. Its his direction along with the performances that makes the film a good one time watch.
The love story works big time and although Raj is engaged to Simran, you want Jay and Simran to fall in love and no matter how clichd it might sound – live happily ever after.

Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor are perfectly cast and its their sparkling chemistry that stays with you long after the credits roll. Both look amazing in every scene.

The more important half of the film, the second, is well paced and while very predictable works very well for the film.
The music by Vishal and Shekhar is awesome. Almost every song is a gem – Bin Tere, Jab Mila Tu, Sadka to name a few.
The background score (Salim Sulaiman) is excellent. Cinematography (Ayananka Bose) is amazing. Dialogues (Punit Malhotra) are very well written.

What doesn't work

The first half is stretched too long. The film rests on a thin plot and there is nothing much to miss if you walk in a few minutes late.
As mentioned above the film is very predictable and although the climax seemed to have worked big time with the audience, it wasn't great.
Performances

Sonam Kapoor is a revelation and should sweep most awards this year. Her character is immensely likable and her performance with a touch of innocence and plenty of charm makes it easily the best performance in the film.

Imran Khan is brilliant and in form for the first time since his first film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. The audience, especially girls, will love him in the film.
Kavin Dave is very good. Sameer Dattani is wasted. Bruna Abdullah can't act to save her life. Samir Soni is okay. Aamir Ali is good.
Overall, Punit Malhotra on debut gets most things right. His direction is top notch, the casting is perfect and the performances are superb. A good weekend watch.

In the very first scene, clippings from DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE, DIL CHAHTA HAI and HUM TUM are shown. No prizes for guessing that the film is pretty much a collage of copious famous love stories of the 90s, which were appealing at that time but don't have much worth now.

Jay (Imran Khan), who prefers to call himself 'J' because it's 'cool', is a complete Casanova. He loves to flirt with girls and is always thinking about ways to woo them. But love is a strict no no for him, and love stories...! What makes matters worse for him is the fact that he's working as an assistant director under Veer (Samir Soni), who is supposed to be the most romantic filmmaker in the Industry. He just has to grin and bear it.

If that's not enough, he is made to work with the new production designer on the film, Simran (Sonam Kapoor), who is a die-hard romantic film buff. The principle of opposites attract comes into play and a bond grows between the two. But Simran is already engaged to Raj (Sameer Dattani), who gives her one white flower everyday (DIL CHAHTA HAI, anyone?)

The most novel part of I HATE LUV STORYS is its interesting title and cast. But that's just about it.

It attempts to be differently similar to the various cliched romantic films, but it is pretty much like one, to the point where it actually makes fun of itself. In the beginning, you like the mockery, but it gets banal as the film progresses. In one of the scenes, Karan Dave who plays J's senior and his best friend, shows a chart which has a list of the ingredients of love stories like fight, sing, airport etc and the film covers almost all of them!

Imran Khan impresses in his hate for love stories but fails when he falls in love. You fall in love with the notorious and quirky demeanour in the initial reels. He just about holds the first half together, which is briskly paced but doesn't take the story forward.

However, his quant nature drastically changes when he realises that he's in love. The narrative takes a complete romantic detour from thereon and starts cracking.

The second half completely drags. A few humourous scenes scattered in the second half provide much respite in the film which has a wafer-thin script. The climax, though predictable, is still likeable.

Costumes by Manish Malhotra are chic. He makes Sonam Kapoor look ravishing in those exotic sarees. The picturisation of the songs are a big let down and doesn't do justice at all to Vishal-Shekhar's eclectic music. In fact, the songs at times appear to be forced in the narrative. Ayanka Bose's cinematography is passable. The film has a few vivid locations but it is not something which we haven't seen in the past. The dialogues by Punit Malhotra are very urban.

Sonam Kapoor is playing a character which suits her persona, and she does fulfill the director's requirements. Having said that, she looks pretty uncomfortable in her serious scenes. Imran Khan whose character is pretty similar to the one he played in JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA, is very comfortable initially but tends to overact later, especially in the emotional scenes. The chemistry between Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor lacks spark. Samir Soni is very impressive. Sameer Dattani is completely wasted. Bruna Abdullah looks stupid but probably that is what was expected of the character. Karan Dave gets to say some of funniest dialogues and is decent.

I HATE LUV STORYS wouldn't make you fall in love with it.

I Hate Luv Storys Takes A Very Good Start

Friday 2nd July 2010 12.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

I Hate Luv Storys took a very good start this morning at multiplexes over its first two shows. The collections were excellent at multiplexes of big centres like Mumbai and Delhi while places like Lucknow and Jaipur had good collections.

The metroes were showing 80-90% collections while other places were around 60-70%. The figures from single screens are still to come but the film was heavily concentrated at multiplexes and the very good start gives the film a good chance of success.

The business of the film is likely to be strongest in Mumbai, Delhi/UP, East Punjab and Mysore.

Movie review: I Hate Luv Storys

Story: Jay Dhingra (Imran Khan) is an aaj ka chokra. He turns up his nose at anything that remotely resembles soppy sentimentality, even though he works as an assistant to a film maker (Samir Soni) who peddles the most improbable mush on screen.

Enter, the new art director, Simran Sharma (Sonam Kapoor) who eats, sleeps and is drunk heady on ishq-vishq and all that goes with it. A diehard romantic, she even has a perfect boyfriend called Raj (Samir Dattani) who gifts her a white chrysanthemum, each time he meets her. But will the pristine white flowers score over Jay's crazy red roses, and crazier ways? Keep guessing....

Movie Review: First things first. Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor make an interesting pair. After the Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif coupling, this seems to be the most refreshing jodi that's jaunting and jiving on screen. Nice chemistry. Nice tu-tu-main-main (sparring). Nice physical compatibility. And a well-balanced emotional quotient. Kudos to the two of them to carry forth a film which once again doesn't really have anything to boast about in the 'storys' department.

Thematically, I Hate Luv Storys, is extremely simplistic, uni-layered and terribly predictable. Imran and Sonam do begin on the we-hate-each-other note, with Imran squirming at any and everything that's filmy while Sonam swears by it all: pink teddys, bunches of blooms, candle-light dinners, Karan Johar films, cuddly Cupid's bows, shooting stars, soppy dialogues and all that made-for-each-other mush. But we all know the way the wind blows, from the word go. Mush shall rule, and how! For all the digs that producer Karan Johar allows on himself (filmmaker Samir Soni is actually a spoof on KJo), we know the film's going to end up reiterating KJo -- and all he translates into onscreen -- as king.

So, Jay Dhingra, who likes girls, but hates girly stuff, is gonna end up crying like a girl very soon. Of course, first he must ridicule Simran for all her 'stoopid' misconceptions about lurrrv, including her boyfriend Raj who besides being a frumpish bore, wears 'fugly' shirts too. But it doesn't take long for the tables to be turned, twice over. On the one hand, Simran discovers her penchant for Mr Wrong (quirky, irreverent Imran), rather than Mr Right (politically correct Samir). And on the other hand, sceptic Imran succumbs to the love bug, red roses, rain-drenched songs, airport encounters, et all. Only, their turn-overs are mistimed. So that, when Simran says 'haan', jokey Jay says 'nah!' and when Jay wanna say 'yes, yes, yes!', it's a punctilious let's-be-just-friends from the sobered Simran.

Kya khali-peeli confusion, all this babalog blah. But hey, blah can be timepass too. Specially when it has loads of icing on it. Debutant director Punit Malhotra layers his first film with oodles of sugar coating: great locales, mast music (Vishal-Shekhar), a yummy 'n yuppy lead pair, some laugh-out-loud moments and a lot of laugh-on-ourself sequences that ridicule the romcoms that roll out of the Bollywood factory (there are jibes on almost all of Karan Johar films), only to finally reiterate them as pills the public wants. On the performance front, watch out for Imran's endless emoticons (eyebrow lifts, smirks, smileys) and his pronounced pout. And for Sonam's svelte form and pleasant screen presence.

Candy floss floats. Popcorn rules. Go, chew on it.

A word about:

Performances: Cool. Nothing to boast about, but quite watchable, both Sonam and Imran. Together, they share a lively chemistry that keeps the fun rolling. Samir Soni's spoof on Karan Johar-Sanjay Leela Bhansali is cute. Samir Dattani is suitably stiff. He's supposed to be a bore, no.

Story: Punit Malhotra's story is ekdum simple and predictable. But then, when was romance supposed to be rocket science!

Dialogues: Very ordinary. Sometimes corny.

Cinematography: Ayananka Bose creates a visually pretty film.

Music: Vishal-Shekhar create a peppy score that goes well with the pop tenor of the film. Watch out for the title track, Bin Tere and Bahara.

Styling: Manish Malhotra's costumes are the high point: uber cool and urban chic. Lot's of 'fugly' shirts juxtaposed against fundoo Tees, with crazy graffiti.

Inspiration: All of Karan Johar films!

Not Much Love for "I Hate Luv Storys"

Bollywood movie "I Hate Luv Storys" directed by debutant Punit Malhotra releases worldwide today. The romantic comedy revolves around a cynical assistant director, Jay (Imran Khan), and an emotional set designer, Simran (Sonam Kapoor) at odds over the meaning of love and whether it's even necessary.

Getty Images
Bollywood actors Imran Khan and Sonam Anil Kapoor promote their latest movie 'I Hate Luv Storys' on June 30, 2010 in Mumbai.

Karan Johar, the man behind many hit films based on love, is producing "I Hate Luv Storys" along with Ronnie Screwvala's UTV Motion Pictures. The combo has created immense interest among movie buffs.

Critics have rated the film above average, but only just. They note that this is a movie that will attract youth but is too similar to various cliched romances.

U.S. entertainment trade publication Hollywood Reporter's Lisa Tsering says the film is "packed with tongue-in-cheek references to such memorable Hindi films as 'Dil Chahta Hai' and 'Devdas.'"

Ms. Tsering goes on to say "the film breezily ignores one of the most significant cliches of Bollywood — nepotism — which seems particularly ironic because the film's director (debutant Punit Malhotra, nephew of costumer designer Manish Malhotra), Khan (nephew of actor-director Aamir Khan) and Kapoor (daughter of Anil Kapoor) have all gotten a lucky break."

The Bollywood Trade News Network says "I Hate Luv Storys" wouldn't make the audience fall in love with it. "No prizes for guessing that the film is pretty much a collage of copious famous love stories of the 90s, which were appealing at that time but don't have much worth now," says Pankaj of the Bollywood Trade News Network. The only novel part about the movie is its interesting title and cast, notes the Bollywood film website.

Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India says Punit Malhotra's story is extremely simplistic, uni-layered and predictable but when was romance supposed to be rocket science. "Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor make an interesting pair. After the Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif coupling, this seems to be the most refreshing jodi (pair) that's jaunting and jiving on screen… Kudos to the two of them to carry forth a film which once again doesn't really have anything to boast about in the 'storys' department."

Indian portal Rediff.com reports the film has all its trademark eye-candy in place — pretty people, trendy clothes, funky decor and stunning locations. "Ignoring the weird grammar logic behind its title, you browse through the colourful inlay featuring cutesy couple shots juxtaposed with cardboard hearts and movie reel," the website writes.

Please leave your own views in the Comments section after you watch the movie and tell us whether the critics got it right or not.

^^ Ouch..that was harsh! Hopefully the film clicks with audiences. The fact we have not got a 90's/early 2000 style film for so long, may be that would be the USP of the film.
