In this interview, she talks about her role in Rajneeti, her view on politics and on how challenging was it to play a serious role for the movie.
How do you see the role of ------ played by you in Rajneeti?
Initially I was a little surprised with the role that was offered to me as I had not played such a character before in any of my movies. At the same time I was worried as to whether I would be able to do justice to the character that I will be portraying. I do hope that I'll meet the expectations of everybody including my audiences.
When the role was offered to you initially by Prakash Jha how did you react?
(Laughs) I was not sure whether Prakash ji had called up the right person, because the demand of the character was completely different. I had never acted in a movie of this genre before. I even had asked Prakash ji whether he has picked up the right person for the role.Rumor has it that the movie is inspired by the first family of India- The Gandhi's. What is your take in that?
No, the movie has nothing to do with the first family of India. Maybe the way I have been portrayed in the promos of the movie in such a way that has made people associate with any real personality. Maybe there is a problem with my accent which forces people to correlate the character I have played with someone.
What is exactly the character that you have portrayed in the movie?
Well I can't tell you much before the movie it is released. My character is that of the daughter of a big industrialist who studies outside of India and comes back to the country and gets married with the leader of a political party and later becomes a part of the political scenario in the country.
Do you intend to say that your character in Rajneeti is also political?
No, my character is definitely not solely concerned with politics though it has shades of being political in the movie. My entry into politics comes late after my husband dies in the movie.
What do you have to say about politics and politicians in the country? Are they good or bad?
I personally believe that it is very easy to criticize politicians but it is a fact that there lives are no less troubled than any other people in the country. It is very tough to be always in the line of fire and to be always criticized but as they say 'the wearer know best where the shoe pins'.You have been known as a glam-doll in Bollywood while in Rajneeti you play a complete contrasting role. Was playing the character a challenge?
Yes, during the preliminarily stages of making the movie I had a problem with playing my character but as days passed, I got more familiar with my role. Indeed, it was a huge challenge for me and once the movie hits the theatres only then can I and the public at large can comment upon the character played by me.
You are been linked with Ranbir Kapoor for sometime now, what do you have to say about that?
I have been coupled with every other actor that I have worked with. So this is nothing new to me. Yes we do share a good on-screen chemistry but there is nothing beyond that.
