B.O. update: 'Karthik' starts well at plexes, 'Teen Patti' dull |
- By Taran Adarsh, February 26, 2010 - 17:44 IST |
Like last week, this week too witnessed two new releases - TEEN PATTI and KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK - but the footfalls at cineplexes were better this Friday [thankfully!]. KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK opened to a 40% to 60% response across several multiplexes, although the occupancy was better at some centres. The youth of big centres seem to be the target audience for this film and the long weekend should help the film garner decent collections at plexes. The second release, TEEN PATTI, opened to a dull response. The opening ranged from 10% to 15%, but the business should improve towards the evening shows as also on Saturday and Sunday. |
Cast – Farhan Akhtar, Deepika Padukone, Sanjay Dutt, Omi Vaidya, Boman Irani, Vipin Sharma, Yatin Karyekar, Ram Kapoor, Shefali Chhaya
Director – Vijay Lalwani
Producer – Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar
Genre/Language – Thriller/ Hindi
Release Date – 26th February 2010
Runtime – 134mins
Pro – Farhan Akhtar with his acting, the unique thriller storyline
Con – could have been better with some over stretched scenes and unnecessary songs!
Rating – 3/5
Character Introduction
Farhan Akhtar – Karthik Narayan
Deepika Padukone – Shonali Mukherjee
Sanjay Dutt – Raj Kamath
Omi Vaidya – Vicky Bhatia
Ram Kapoor – Mr. Kamath, Karthik's boss
Shefali Chhaya – Mrs. Kapadia
Plot – Karthik is an introvert guy and a total loser in the construction company he works. He has strong feelings for the hot colleague Shonali but doesn't have the courage to admit it (except for those 1317 unsent mails he has written so far!). He is lonely and no one ever notices his presence in the office.
Then one day he gets a call which changes his life! The caller introduces himself as Karthik himself and reveals that he knows everything about our loser friend. The caller Karthik provides tips to the loser Karthik till his life sees the light of success. He gets a life, and yes gets his girl too.
But life has something else in store for Karthik who somehow offends the caller and goes back to his losing spree. But he is determined to get back all he acquired once, and how he does that is the tale of KCK.
My Reviews – Farhan Akhtar is worth watching. Deepika has improved a lot since her early days and she looks so fresh. All the other actors do justice to their role like Ram Kapoor as the rude boss. Although the suspense is almost over by the interval time, you stick to your seats to watch till the end.
Conclusion – And if you wonder who is the other Karthik on phone, time to book your tickets this weekend!

Film: Karthik Calling Karthik
Director: Vijay Lalwani
Cast: Farhan Akhtar, Deepika Padukone, Shefali Shah
Rating: **
You know those films that have a unique storyline, experiment with technique and are defined by that oft-repeated term – hatke. These films are lauded for trying out something new and appreciated for giving audiences a 'different experience' at the movies.
Karthik Calling Karthik (KCK), probably, has all the above features. But does that make the film entertaining, or even watchable? Hell no.
KCK starts off on an interesting note, dazzles you with its brilliant cinematography and eye-pleasing sets and some smart dialogues initially, but eventually suffers with that one ingredient responsible for most bad films – a shabby script. In the end, when the pieces fall together, you really want to ask what the point was after all.
Karthik (Akhtar) has nothing going for him – his job sucks, he has no friends and the love of his life, Shonali (Padukone) isn't even aware of his existence in spite of having worked in the same office as him for nearly four years.
Karthik suffers from a confidence problem mainly because he holds himself responsible for the death of his brother when they were little kids. He seeks help from a psychiatrist (Shah) who looks at him from over her specks and mouths dialogues to the effect of 'yeh tumhara vehem hai', from time to time.
Even as the memory of his brother's death comes back to haunt him repeatedly, Karthik is fired from his job. Having nothing to live for, Karthik is on the verge of committing suicide, when his phone rings.
If you've seen the promos, you know what happens at this point. Someone who sounds just like Karthik speaks up from the other end, and introduces himself as Karthik.
Why? What? How? The film answers the questions in due time. Only, when it does, you wonder why a round trip was needed to narrate what could have been said in a one-way journey.
The first half has its moments. But some jokes, that work the first time, are repeated pointlessly. Like, at one point, when Shonali offers Karthik a drink, he asks her if she wants to take advantage of him being drunk.
In the next scene, Karthik says he doesn't want to take advantage of Shonali being drunk. And sometime later, Karthik says: "I'm drunk too. So we can take advantage of each other now." Ok, we get the point! People make out only when they are drunk?!
The characters are all unidimensional – Karthik, his girlfriend, his psychiatrist are good people. His boss, his colleague, his landlord are bad people, two of who are cheating on their wives.
Farhan may have put in a good act – it's his best, certainly, among just three films so far – and Deepika looks smoldering and performs well too. But that's hardly reason enough to sit through this one.
Unless you don't mind thinking to yourself in the end, "THIS is what it was all about?!"

'Karthik Calling Karthik' is actually two films. One, an office romance between a colourless drone and a beautiful colleague who notices him only when the boss lashes out at him in public. And the other about a guy who hears voices in his head and gets strange phonecalls from someone who claims to be him. Karthik calling Karthik, geddit?
It could have been one film if first time director Vijay Lalwani had kept the writing and the tone consistent as he went about building the plot points. But there's really no steady progression, just staccato sequences where Karthik ( Akhtar) and Shonali ( Padukone) go from happy to fractious within nanoseconds.
Akhtar may not have played this specific character before, a timid fellow who wears his heart on his sleeve and gets bullied by his boss ( Kapoor), but he comes across pretty much as he did in his earlier acting gigs. Could this be the extent of his range? And just what is it with Bollywood bosses? First it was the mean and vicious one in 'Rocket Singh', and now this one, who is equally nasty. Padukone is gorgeous-looking, but unreal as an ambitious architect : not once is she seen labouring over a plan ; all she does is check mail once in a while, and talk about how all men are dogs. But the one who is most unfairly done against is Shah as the sympathetic shrink, in glasses-large notepad- pencil, talking about the 'conscious and subconscious brain', and spouting such lines as " the mind can be a very twisted thing".
The background score is superb, though. Go listen to this movie, and once in a while, watch it, to admire Ms Padukone in what passes for office garb.
