India pays homage to 26/11 martyrs
Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, lyricist Javed Akhtar, singer Shreya Ghoshal and tennis player Sania Mirza were among prominent personalities who gathered at the historic India Gate on Sunday to express the nation's solidarity against terror.
The 60-minute programme -- A Nation In Solidarity Against Terror -- is being organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs with a view to sending a strong message that India has the capacity, courage and confidence to overcome the threat.
"India has at regular intervals been the target of terror attacks sponsored by external terrorist organisations. The terror attacks were meant to weaken the resolve of the country and challenge its capacity to remain a peaceful and democratic Nation," an official statement said.
It said that November 29 is symbolic, since it was the day when the terrorist siege in Mumbai ended last year.
Artists, sportspersons and representatives of civil society from across the country came together at the India Gate to share the message of solidarity, courage and resolve to stand up against terrorist violence.
Among the prominent persons participating in the event were actress Nandita Das, violin player L Subramaniam, singers Kavita Krishnamurthy, Shilpa Rao, musician Shankar Mahadevan, shooter Abhinav Bindra and filmmaker Feroz Abbas Khan.
While paying tributes to the terror attack martyrs, Shar Rukh Khan denourced terrorism, calling them Rakshash (demons) and their religion atankwaad (terrorism). He said, "There can be no two options on terror."
"I pray to God to give us strength so that all of us live in peace. Till we are together, we can always defeat terror," he said to a laud applaud.
Nandita Das hosted the event, which included musical rendition to pay tributes to the 26/11 victims and heroes.
