Was she as good as Sonam/Vidya in her debut movie?

And I am not saying they're not talented.

There was a spark in Rani and Preity in their very first movies. I remember Preity in Dil Se and was like Wow this girl is a natural.

But she was plain horrible in her first half a dozen movies and in todays time actresses that dont do well in their debut movies dont get another chance.

A dozen is 12 so half a dozen is 6...So which of the first half a dozen of her movies she acted bad in?

Rani was at her best in her initial movies as well.Raji ki,mehendi..may be crap movies,but her acting was always spot on.hell ,sonam cannot be compared to rani...!!..and parineeta is not vidya's debut.she has done soaps and adds..!!!

I just can't stand any of the recent 'over-hyped' actresses (or shall I say stars?) - Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukon would top my list when it comes down to faces that have an instant negative impact on my stomach (without delving into deeper rationale). Stars of this generation seriously need to start concentrating on their acting prowess, than focusing on what lipstick to use, what makeup put on, how much clothes to wear (or open...). True talent survive through the test of time. Good looks and Barbie-doll images can get you on the top for a few years - and then dump you back to where you deserve.
Actresses I like of this generation would be Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra obviously (though, I doubt if they can be categorized as actress of 'this generation' - they had made their debut ten and seven years ago respectively).
Actresses I have high hopes for would be Kangana Ranaut and Konkona Sen Sharma. Both are going up with each movies, especially Kangana. I highly doubt if Konkona would be able to hold her status for a long time, as she does not have the barbie-doll image Indian audiences (not meaning to generalize) prefers.

Rani is an extremely talented actress, and the numerous awards she had won in her carreer, (includijg awards for best actress, best supporting actress, best actress (critics)) is not only the living proof of that, but also the fact that she is a versatile actress. Preity could be bubbly, charming and cute - but she isn't someone I would like to call as talented (though Veer-Zaara and KANK was a turning point). Nevertheless, I enjoy watching her films. What I enjoy more is watching films starring both Rani and Preity - who can forget Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Veer-Zaara and KANK.

I do not think Rani and Preity were "lucky" to get where they are now. They worked hard to get in the position where they are now. I disagree with the notion that they are here in the top list only because actresses on that generation were retiring. Kajol is the only one who retired intentionally. Karisha, Madhuri etc retiredwhen they saw no films for them in the horizon.

And btw, if Rani's performances in her debut films were that horrible, can someone explain how come she won the award for the best new actress(best fresh talent, the way they put it) in Star Screen award - an award which claims to focus more in acting than in anything else? How come she gone on to win the award for the best side actress from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, or Lux face of the year for Ghulam. 😛

I definitely think its easier now. Kareena Kapoor even mentioned this in her Beautiful People interview when she admitted that Salman Khan, Karisma, Akshay and Saif were all struggling through the 90s to really do good films and have great roles.

Now a pre-req for a heroine is a fit body, looks and acting comes second.

If Rani/Preity debuted now, they'd def be doing films like Deepika and Katrina.

Just yesterday I was discussing with my friends how hard it is for these days for new comers to create a niche for themselves and reach on top.

My point was that Rani and Preity were just lucky as when they debuted Bollywood was in desperate need of some new faces as,

Kajol retired
Karishma was retiring
Madhuri and Juhi Chawla were just too old

Aishwaria was the only top leading lady at that time so these two got it easy. What if they had debuted now when there are top faces like Aish(still there), Deepika, Kareena and Katrina.

I think they would've had felt as personally I believe Rani was terrible in her debut days and took time improving and is the best now!
