Kurbaan hits the target at the BO

TNN 22 November 2009, 12:00am IST

The much-awaited release of the year — Kurbaan — which won rave reviews has been welcomed by the audience.
Filmmaker Karan Johar is excited with the response that the film has garnered in its opening week. Not jut the weekend bookings, but even the paid previews saw a massive booking. The collections we hear are the highest this year. The Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor starrer has made its mark at the box office this weekend.
Besides the huge opening, a astounding 1,500 prints were released all over India, which is among the highest ever released at one time. Karan has every reason to celebrate with this movie that saw Dharma Productions venturing into yet another genre and hitting the bull's eye.
What is this? Who's right? Argh.
One said it opened up average. Another said below average. This said great.
Who do I believe?
From some ppl I hear it was a packed house, others found their theaters not as full. I know the paid previews did very well. But I'm just concerned about collections. This article is right about the rave reviews though. Most critics have praised Kurbaan.

Are they saying that no other movie has had more than 1500 prints released? I'm sure SRK and Aamir movies have had wider releases. Heck even Kaminey had a 1700 print release.

I think they meant 15,000 besides the previews. The previews garnered a lot as well. Some other article said kurbaan was going with 1700 prints.

Whatever the case, such a massive release was a BAD IDEA for a movie like kurbaan.

Wasnt Kurbaan 1,700? I think people will get a better idea in the following week, when numbers still start coming up.

But boxoffice india also called kaminey an avergae, while other sites were reporting that it was a hit.

Yeah, you wont know its status in just a week anyway. Some movies hold steady in their 2nd 3rd weeks too. Also, initial opening can be misleading because I remember KI opened big, and everyone called it a hit. Even Akki. But later on Akki himself admitted that the movie didnt do as good as it was made out to be. So, the initial days are never a warrant to being hit or flop.

No actually Kaminey had a month to earn money without any interference. So the status of the movie kept changing. It went from below average to average to above average to hit..someone even called it a superhit. No other big movie released for a month, so Kaminey was the only movie people could have watched. After Kaminey, the next two big movies that came out were DBH and Wanted (released on Sept 18th). The only reason Kaminey isnt called "superhit" is cuz of its HUMONGOUS budget and cuz of all the hurdles that came before it released. If it wasnt for these things, it would have been next (BO wise) after Wanted, I can bet on that. It is Shahid's career's biggest hit, bigger than JWM and Vivah; same with PC and VB- their biggest hit ever.

But yeah two days are nothing to judge a movie. JWM didnt open big either but it went on to be huge because of word of mouth. We should know soon.

Is this a trade paper? Because BOI, Bollywoodhungama, Bollybusiness, Business Standard, IBOS..all have reported below average opening. It might still pick up because of the good reviews though. It's too early to call it a flop.
