Just a few weeks ago I saw an episode of his show where he had a special segment for the best movies and best performances of 2009. Surprisingly he now says Dev D is easily one of the best films of 2009 and has outstanding performances. He thoroghly enjoyed the film.
He did the same for Lagaan and Rang De Basanti. One episode he said they are the classics of this decade.
Clearly he changed his mind after the box office result and the acclaim.
THIS is exactly my problem with Taran Adarsh. I like some reviewers but there is no critic with whom I agree 100 percent of the time. Baradwaj Rangan is someone I really love as far as critics go because his reviews are well thought out and well written. He gives a fair chance to every single film and judges them on their own merit. Or atleast that is what he appears to do in his reviews. The thing with Taran Adarsh is that I don't think he is an honest reviewer. It is perfectly fine to like mindless comedies and give them rave reviews. But stick to your guns - why does he keep flip-flopping like Radhika pointed out?
When Blue released he was perhaps the only critic who gave it not just a good review but 4 stars. Everyone else pretty much ripped it apart. But here is the interesting bit - there was no press screening for Blue - so no other reviewers could watch the film before it actually released in the theatres except for Mr. Taran Adarsh. He was apparently especially invited to a screening of the film by its makers a couple of days before the release. Just him - no other film critic. Now that sounds very fishy, even to my old optimistic self. 😆
My problem is not that he likes films that I don't like and vice-versa. But that it is painfully obvious that he is incredibly biased and will pretend that he liked a particular film when it proves to be a success but would never stick out his neck by praising a well-made film in a review if a) he hasn't been paid by the producers or b) its a little too unconventional for him to praise it in earnest, i.e. he shows his trade analyst style.
