'Kurbaan' suffers rejection at box office

Collections not up to expectations
By Usha Lakra
Tue, Nov 24, 2009 10:31:13 GMT
Kurbaan has failed to make an impact like it was predicted by Bollywood trade pundits. The movie opened to an average response and to mixed reviews by the critics, some trashing it while others hailing it as "the most powerful film of the year".

The movie grossed around Rs 4 crore approx on its opening day. Overall its collection was mediocre except in Mumbai territory where it collected around Rs 1.5 crore on its first day. The Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor starrer couldn't boost the collections even on Saturday and Sunday. The collections did not show a big leap and the movie just managed a fair business over its first weekend. The collections dropped on Monday taking its four day business to only Rs 15.75 crore approx. Now seeing its performance at the box office, it seems the film can't even do Rs 30 crore nett business.

However, Hollywood film 2012 has emerged the biggest hit of 2009 in India. The film grossed Rs 25 crore approx over its first week from its English and Hindi versions. The dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions have added further Rs 8-10 crore approx.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani again had a wonderful week. The movie garnered around Rs 16 crore nett business. The two-week total is now around Rs 54 crore nett and the film may cross Rs 60 crore nett - a confirmed super hit after Wanted and Love Aaj Kal.

The next change is De Dana Dan and we hope it will rake in the moolah at the box office.

Remember the dialgoue from Dostana - "Aunty ji Miami ho ya London aapka beta gay hai"

It applies the same here...Crticis/fans love it or not. Kurbaan is a big flop". Doesn't matter how many cutting from the newspaper and media is not going to change the fate of this movie. It is a trash movie..ream my lips GARBAGE because it toke the audience to be stupid by having so many loopholes. Trying to sell a garbage movie as an intelligent movie to the audience and insult their intelligence.

Karan and his team deserve this. The Yashraj are having the last laugh as they roll the money with New York.

😕I haven't watched Kurbaan yet, so I can't judge the content of it. I feel the movie is a real intense one.
But I remember one month ago or so when I first saw the trailer, I was a bit sceptical about the love making scenes which were a bit too much appealing..And the whole Saifeena brand didn't do good for the movie.
New-York dealt with the traumatism of being taken for a terrorist or an extreme Islamist. Concrete Replication in real life : SRK and the NY airport incident. The background is about Friendship, Love....
Neil and Irfan were very very good and convincing...John was good in the torture sequences...Kat was moving at the end....
Fanaa dealt with Pakistan/India antagonisms since the 1947 partition and the replications of Terrorism...with a filmi love story background and a superb ending..(But I don't see why Aamir had to turn into a loving hubby and caring father in the second half --- the terrorists are machine killers, nothing can stop them....they're brainwashed. They're trained to be human guns). Kajol was very good especially at the end.
Those two movies clearly condamn terrorism and don't let you choose your own interpretation...
Of course, some parts of both films aren't very realistic but the whole package is ..mmm ok. Nothing extraordinary but it's watchable.
Kurbaan was marketed as a "serious" movie with a perfect mastering of the subject...I've read several times that Karan had done research about muslims and so on....So I was pretty happy of it...
Why is the setting in the USA.....? Again?
There were attacks in Spain recently....There are Indian people everywhere..why again the US...Islam terrorism is everywhere : Indonesia, Spain, England...not forcibly the US all the time..In the 80's there were a lot attacks in Paris Metro and a lot of people died....So every country has a phase which deals with those kind of events.
So I guess people expected some nex storyline and refreshing balance between extreme islamism and moderate Islam followers...Because I think if I was an Hindu director, I 'd be careful about how I deal with my picturization of muslims in my movies...I'd be too afraid to project a limited view of who they are...
Because I know liberal muslims...or a bit modern...
And every religion has extrem sects..different shools ....but every religion has a moderate side..and in Islam case it's HIGH time to show it! That would have been the real new storyline....A confrontation between the two sides of Islam....
The fact Bebo's character is Hindu isn't relevant at all...She can't understand truly Saif's characters state of mind and how to make him change his mind...about his views.....
The difference between those 3 movies is that Kurban deals with islam terrorism...Fanaa and N-Y don't reflect any religious ideology which could justify the terrorism they choose to portray/define..
And I think that's a huge mistake to take a subject like Islam terrorism without giving a voice to moderate Islam followers because they are the more representative of "true" Islam.
Of course It's just a point of view
Kjo promoted KANK as a movie about relationships but it was a movie about infidelity and finding happiness in a second significant relationship...
For those who think that there are silly movies, I don't think there are any..There are different genres for any audience that's it...It's not because I don't really understand some "funny" parts in Ajab prem...that the movie is beep, it's just that I may not have enough of the hindi cinema culture in my mind to understand it all or some jokes on hindi tv shows...
I have my sense of humor too and it has to do with my culture..In France it's usually funny to say that someone has cheated on another...people mock when it happens to someone not to be mean but because it's considered to be a "kinky activity" so people smile at those situations because in my culture we take people as they are non perfect stupid selfish and so on....In indian culture they have high standards of being so I GUESS it's not easy for every one to conform to those standards...But at least they have standards and I think it's a very good thing....
So Akkhi Kat movies work because they don't fake being what they're not they're just light comedies with trendy music and clothes and a lot of sweetness...So they market something people want and accept as it is...so they're not fooled...But Kurbaan sold sex, hotness, prfoundness and some people think it's not the good picture that's why there is some disappointement and bitterness.;Moreover the audience was already offered those storylines in Dil Se Fanaa NY....
The audience gets tired with a useless seriouness..and the comment of Saif about the attacks were really out of place...and not considerate at all...and people just wanted to take out of their mind the pain....Can we blame them for that....?

Kurbaan disappoints, High hopes on De Dana Dan

24 Nov, 2009 05:35 pm ISTlINDIATIMES MOVIES
It's difficult to predict what will click with the audiences every time. Case in point is Rensil D'Silva's Kurbaan which had everything in its favour from its prestigious banner (Dharma Productions), starry cast (Saif-Kareena-Vivek) and immense hype (backless Kareena, political attacks). Despite that the film did not manage to take a decent opening.

Made at a reported budget of Rs 38 crores, Karan Johar sold the distribution of Kurbaan to UTV at Rs 50 crores who released the film across 1,700 screens worldwide. Collections on opening day were as low as 35-40% and, surprisingly, despite the good reviews showed no considerable rise over the weekend. Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, "Shockingly, the collections on Sunday were even less than that on Friday and Saturday. The film is a big blow to Dharma Productions and UTV."

Most multiplexes had expected an opening of around 85-90% for a film of this stature. One could say the business was slightly better at single screens, though Kurbaan wasn't supposed to be a single-screen film. Manoj Desai (of Maratha Mandir, Gaiety-Galaxy) says, "We registered 80 per cent collections on the first three days whereas it did not go beyond 40 per cent in other theatres. However, the collections have nosedived since yesterday. Koi picture dekhne ke liye tayyar hi nahin hai . The overall feeling is that it's a very serious and cruel film."

Kurbaan brings bad news both for Dharma Productions and UTV. Trade circles insist that even for Karan Johar's Wake Up Sid , UTV only made a meager profit of Rs 50 lakhs. UTV already has a spate of flops this year including Delhi 6, What's Your Raashee, Kaminey and many others.

All eyes now are on De Dana Dan releasing this week which brings back the Hera Pheri team of Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty and Paresh Rawal with director Priyadarshini. Co-produced by Akshay Kumar, let's wait and watch if the team if able to recreate the success of Hera Pheri .
