"Lots of people tell me 'I just wish I was a movie star'. I tell them that if you want to be a movie star, you have to be very responsible and very humble about it and not say every time that 'I am the best' even though I am!" he quipped, triggering a wave of laughter.
The occasion was the launch of a new watch and the extension of his contract as brand ambassador of Tag Heuer for another three years, and talk naturally veered to 'time' - and how things change. Has he, himself?
"On a personal level, I don't think I have changed. I think as the years have gone by, people's perception of me has changed. I don't know whether the one they had about me earlier was right or the one they have now. Very few people really know me," says Shah Rukh, who readily concedes the uncontrollable churn of fame.
"There are times when companies change you. Pepsi changed me, some other companies did. But I respect that. I'm a means to an end. When they feel I'm not suitable enough, I am changeable. But that's all right...you move on in life," he shrugs. For a moment he stops himself, a little diffident about sounding more profound than the occasion demands. "I'm being philosophical - does it work for you if I'm philosophical? Or do you just want me to give a cheap quote?" he quips with a quick smile, both as an apology and a light-hearted joke.
"If you are successful you cannot take it for granted, because time will change. That's our biggest struggle in life. If you are up, be assured you will come down. And if you're down, time will someday bring you up again. It's a cause to be humble," he says. That said, how does he feel being the continuing and unquestioned icon of all things metrosexual?
Surprisingly, Shah Rukh frankly admits the expression still baffles him. "I still don't think I've figured out this term. If you told me I'm the biggest icon for the sexual man in India I would like it. But what is metrosexuality? I mean, people who buff their nails, go for facials, cut their hair in a certain way...is that what makes you metrosexual?" he wonders.
Will Karan Johar answer this one please!
