Umm this was random.

WHen I say an icon, I can either mean somethign pretty and colorful to sit on top of my desktop and links me to crazy stuff or somebody who probably would be a motivating role model in a certain area.

These days you see so many actors and actresses who have done nothing but act in masala bollywood movies win "YOUTH ICON" awards. the movie may even BE DIFFERENT but still ....Ofcourse they are pretty desktop mein baitne waale icons jaise hain...but beyond that, what kind of awards are these, another evening out to show glittery dresses to the masses so we can ooh and aah over it?

I can certainly digest certain actors who take a political stand or a stand over an environmental issue and move beyond movies as a certain role model for youth.... apart from that is a country of a blillion plus people unable to find its youth stars anywhere but bollywood?

DO bollywood actors in general deserve the YOUTH ICON awards that they are being showered with? We are country obsessed with people in the silverscree, but still this looks a little over the top doesnt it?

IMO they are not. Nothing against actors but I feel youth icons are someone who are truly inspirational - who are successful yet have made time to uplift the unfortunate, especially if they have done it on their own without help of family connections. e.g, our ex president Abdul Kalam.
Or that IIT student who instead of joining an MNC runs a catering business or the social workers who do so much at great personal cost.Unfortunately tho the youth look up to the actors more than the type of people I mentioned. Who do you think will be intrested in watching an awards show that recognizes unknown people. So in the end its all TRPs but if some good comes out of it then I am all for it.

Completely agree with ur post. Although there are SOME actors/actresses who are deserved to be called youth icon. Who have really truly worked hard to get to where they are. But for the MOST part, I think there are much better and more worthy contendars that could win. 😊

true, there are people who strive as hard as these actors ,in different fields of life, sure ly an IIT topper can influence yoth much more than an actor...?
but the thing is,being popular matters more, these actors do work verrryyyyy hard for where they r right now,of course this isnt for every actor, but there are a few actors,i thing, whcih the youth can look up to...
but of course,i would have liked it more if the popularity factor, which is as much in cricket as in bollywood ,was applied, because i think the cricketers who do well ,like sachin for example, would be perfect for the title....

I don't personally get the whole idea of a "youth icon" anyway. And honestly I would not pick politics as a field to nominate youth icons from anymore than the film industry. There is just as much nepotism and a whole lot more corruption and crime in politics.

If a "youth icon" is any person who has achieved something in the field they choose to work then why not pick actors or cricketers etc.

If a "youth icon" means more than that - lets say someone who seeks to make a difference in other people's lives I would say most politicians don't qualify. In that sense a "youth icon" would be someone like Mohammed Younus from Bangladesh who has worked his whole life for the empowerment of people outside the sphere of influence. But then he has the Nobel Prize which is much more significant than some random "youth icon" award.

Personally, I don't give much weight to these titles/awards no matter who recieves them. I would be happy if someone I like wins it, but I would say it is much better to chart your own course than to emulate someone who has been deemed a "youth icon" whether it is Abdul Kalam or Priyanka Chopra.

I honestly do not comprehend the hype with promoting stars and giving them tags of 'youth' icons. Oh yes, Priyanka has inspired me so much to wear underpants or bras or skirts and roam around gracefully, but other than that what else has she done to inspire me? Katrina has inspired to an extent to transform my accent and look British, but other than that I haven't really been attending social events and assisitng the deprived.
Fine, they are actors, they come and do their medicore work, make a few ROM COMS, and are tagged as icons for children to look up to. We hear kids speak, 'Main Madhuri Banna Chahti hoon' or 'Main Shahrukh Khan banna chahta hoon.' Not most would give examples of their instructors or others that are not exposed for their deeds.
It's funny because if some sane man were in these actors place, then they would decline the award and rightfully speak up as to who deserves it. But then of course, who is sane right?
I reckon for this topic to be sticky.
