The Dogfight Continues
Ram Gopal Varma is well known for throwing punches every now and then towards fellow director Karan Johar, this time around he takes a pot shot at his upcoming 'My Name is Khan'.
RGV let Karan Johar have one below the belt as he stated that he prefers making thrillers instead of bubblegum romances or NRI dramedies. "Some people have a fascination for making family dramas and I find making thrillers much exciting. And what's wrong with it?...any day it's better than making NRI stories," Varma said.
The statement comes in retaliation to Karan Johar's comment on Farah Khan's show 'Tere Mere Beach Mein' where he said "RGV should start making diet biscuits as he's not making cinema anymore." In November 2008 RGV let slip his hatred of Karan Johar's production 'Dostana'. "You can accuse me of anything in this world but please don't accuse me of watching that film" he had said.
Last month RGV criticized KJO's 'unrealistic' scenarios in his films and also poked fun at Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai's extravagant wedding. "For a long time I detested Karan's larger-than-life, feel-good, glossy movies. I found them too ostentatious, coming as I did from a lower middle-class background. I found all the razzmatazz and the shoo-shaa all very unrealistic." he said
"But I was forced to change my viewpoint after I attended the Abhishek-Aishwarya shaadi. I saw exactly the same grand visual and a larger-than-life event at their wedding, that's when I realised that Karan is far closer to reality than I am at least in portraying the upper-middle class society." he added.
He dealt one final sarcastic blow as he said, "I concede it's my mistake, and after this I will never say anything about Karan's movies again."
So who's at fault here? We certainly know who has the upper hand at the moment. Ram Gopal Varma's last few films include Agyaat, Phoonk, Shiva, Nishabd, Darling and Sarkar Raj; and he is currently making the sequels to Phoonk and Agyaat. Karan Johar made Dostana and is filming Shahrukh's My Name is Khan, one of the biggest Bollywood productions. Go figure.
