    The Shah Rukh Khan incident

If Indian officials stopped, say, Tom Hanks at the New Delhi airport and grilled him for an hour or two because of national security concerns, Americans might find it ridiculous and outrageous. Which is just how Indians feel about the detention and questioning at Newark Airport of Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan, who was on his way to Chicago for an Indian Independence Day parade.

Searches on Khan—or SRK as he is familiarly known—increased 800% on Saturday, and the Buzz filled with articles about the contretemps. The story is front page news in India, sitting atop the Yahoo! India home page much of Sunday and meriting several above-the-fold articles and an online forum titled "Is the U.S. unduly harsh to those with Muslim names?" in The Times of India. Headlines from Indian news accounts include "My name is Khan? Too bad. SRK feels the heat of American paranoia," "I was harassed for no reason: SRK,"and "I don't feel like stepping into the US again, says King Khan." Meanwhile, the actor's fans protested what some characterize as humiliating treatment by burning a U.S. flag, and an Indian cabinet minister suggested subjecting visiting Americans to reciprocally inconvenient treatment.

For its part, US Customs says Khan was detained only 66 minutes, which lasted that long only because he and his luggage didn't arrive on the same flight. After initially expressing outrage, Khan—who recently finished shooting a film about, ironically, an Indian victim of racial profiling in the U.S.—said of the incident, "I think it's a procedure that needs to be followed, but an unfortunate procedure."1

ok so I know this thing kind of blew out of proportion but I mean it's not only Shahrukh but its also the media and fans that blew it out of proportion. everyone kind of wouldve figured out he got detained and ofcourse the media was going to get involved and ask Shahrukh questions so he answered them. ANd that way it got to be a bigger issue. And it might have been done for publicity (but it wasnt like he asked for them to detain him so he could publicize)for the movie but everyone does publicize their movies and yes I know the case is different here it could cause riot but I dont think that that's intentional. Also, it is true that a lot of people get detained because of their name so it could be that he did too.
But I agree this issue should not be like the priority and if people are making a big deal then hopefully it is not because a star got detained.
Now dont get me wrong and start yelling at me it is just what I think. And also these media people should really start publicizing true issues in the world....we have a lot.

I'll just talk about the unfairness bit. Whether it's a publicity issue is something too mundane given the actual nature of the proposed unfairness as you put it as. So you are oriented towards one point of view whereby you contend that he was held up for his name. What about the counter reason for the held up? If SRK says he was held up for 2 hours and constantly questioned, then does it necessarily follow that his word becomes the word of truth merely by the virtue that he is considered to be a loyal man with immense popularity. Doesn't it become a difficult situation if one also takes the opposing argument that he was held up for precisely one hour and six minutes and that too not within an official capacity but just a regular, normal and consistent procedure? More like two sides of a coin analogy.

Given that he was held merely because of his name - does that necessarily impart the view that it has to be unfair? It's leads to a balancing act. If USA has particular names in it's data base, there are valid reasons to take extra precautionary measures in order to combat acts of terror justified by national security. It does not mean that if a person has a surname "Khan" then he has to be a terrorist but it also doesn't mean that a person with a surname "Khan" can never indulge into an act of terror. It's just one of the names of the many that are prone to pop up frequently.

STATING FACT

A Muslim group took a morcha to Salman Khan's house to protest against his comment on Shah Rukh Khan's detention drama in the US.

They didn't like Sallu's comments on a TV channel, in response to SRK's racial profiling in the US. The guys behind the morcha felt that as a Muslim, Salman should raise his voice against them being treated as terrorists in the US.

They said that personal differences should be kept aside as times like these." We don't get what all the commotion is about.

All Salman said was, "It's nothing new. It happens to all of us all the time." Lay off, guys. He was simply stating a fact. Besides, it's not just Muslims, all Asians are looked upon suspiciously in America.

@ Rhea_6 post

Salman is under no compulsion to speak what the protesters want to hear. There is no such requirement of unity. It is as much a freedom of speech for Salman to give his opinion as it is for the protesters to protest. Or does the Indian Act on freedom of speech create a filtering process?
