Reality television comes to big screen but the fear factor is that it's too pretentious. So in the same South African city where Akshay Kumar played host to daredevil girls, Sanjay Dutt challenges an eclectic group to perform stunts for his betting business. Predictably you also know their order of elimination with the junior artists getting knocked-off first and subsequently the hero (Imran Khan) surviving over the villain (Ravi Kishen). Ironically, while reality shows are unnecessarily scripted, films which need a tight script are loosely written.

The first half of the film is merely devoted to character introductions though none are convincingly established. For the zillionth time, Sanjay Dutt repeats his gun-toting act, moving around in sherwani , jackets and a French beard in the company of black-suited bodyguards. What more, even his name isn't any different – Musa. Ram Mehra (Imran Khan) has to repay the 20 crores that his late father had lost in stock market. Retired Major Jawar Pratap Singh (Mithun Chakravarthy) has the same conflict that Amitabh Bachchan had in Kaante – needs money for his ailing wife. For the neighbouring country connection, the script takes a Shortcut (Chitrashi Rawat). The best is yet to come! When a loose noose fails to hang rapist Raghav (Ravi Kishen) to death, he is officially set free by the law.

The group is hand-picked by Tamang (Danny) for Musa who indulges into the most synchronized corny conversations in the film. As he gets the team to South Africa, Musa makes them aim on each other at point blank range (in a scene directly lifted from 13 Tzameti ) and only peripheral characters from the circle are subtracted.

What follows is a series of terminal tasks where not the mighty but the lucky would survive. So the characters have their legs gobbled up by rubber sharks and look plastic as they fall off parachutes. Amidst all this action, the director is inclined to force a mandatory romance track (through nonexistent chemistry between Imran and Shruti Hassan) and a rape attempt to reach a speeding climax.

The opening and ending action sequences by Allan Amin are convincingly choreographed but the intermediate stunts appear too artificial. The director tries to cover up the patchiness of the action by Santosh Thundiyil's erratic camerawork but it only disturbs more. The banter between characters in confrontational scenes looks too rehearsed. Each one has a dramatized mugged-up response to complement the opponent's remarks. The emotional connect with viewer is certainly missing despite director Soham Shah's repeated attempts to induce sentiments.

Sanjay Dutt's screen presence in the film is equivalent to Akshay Kumar's contribution to Fear Factor minus his stunts. Imran Khan gives a decent performance though he can go easy on his lip movements. Shruti Hassan is synthetic and fails to impress. Danny is better amongst others but his character is short-lived in the second half. Ravi Kishen, Mithun and Chitrashi are passable.

The script of the film relies too much on coincidental luck. Director Soham Shah rubs too hard on luck but at the same time stresses on the adage that 'the only thing certain about luck is it's going to change'. On that thought here's wishing him better luck next time!

I always knew this was a total rip off of The Condemned. Looks like I'll just have to watch Shruti's scenes on the net.

Fasten your seat belts and get ready for hardcore stunts and thrills, Hollywood ishtyle. Come to think of it, Bollywood hasn't churned out stylised action movies as regularly as it churns out comedies and rom-coms. There's a vacuum for sure. But LUCK fills that lacuna. Be rest assured, you haven't watched such thrills since DHOOM 2.

LUCK is more of a hi-concept film. Three decades ago, Krishna Shah's SHALIMAR narrated the adventures of a billionaire who assembles/invites criminals/gangsters from across the globe to perform the heist of a precious diamond that he possesses. The concept isn't similar here, but in this case too, a gambler assembles people from across the globe for a concept called human betting.

LUCK may not be high on story, but the concept and at least four stylised thrilling sequences make a big difference. Simply put, it makes LUCK lucky.

LUCK may have loads of thrills, but director Soham Shah ensures that the grand canvas and stylised thrills appeal to every strata of movie-going audience. Only thing, had screenplay writers Soham Shah and Rensil D'Silva worked doubly hard to come up with a watertight script, it would've only worked wonders.

After weighing the pros and cons, it can be said that LUCK rides on star power, its concept and adrenaline-pumping thrills primarily. If you're into thrillers or have been missing one, LUCK holds the key.

LUCK tells the tale of mafia kingpin Musa [Sanjay Dutt], who has one obsession: To revolutionize the betting industry. For him, life is a gamble and what better way to skew the odds than play with those with luck on their side.

Different characters from different parts of the world, each with Lady Luck in their favour, are brought in to play the game of death. With millions at stake, how far will each of them go in courting danger and deceit?

The very start of the film transports you to a different world. The viewer is drawn into a world where bets are placed on humans and death-defying stunts are the order of the day. The train sequence at the very start says it all. It's a sequence that not only introduces you to the plot, but also makes a hammer-strong impact. You haven't watched something like this on the Hindi screen before.

The game of death is far more dangerous than those witnessed in the reality shows. The revolver sequence [the first challenge], the helicopter jump, the underwater sequence with sharks and the train sequence in the climax give you goose bumps and remain etched in your memory. There's a scene involving a lighter too, which is sure to draw whistles and claps.

But the film slips due its ineffectual writing. It gyrates from engrossing to bas-theek-hain towards the second hour. The romantic track, to be specific, is flaccid. Also, the climax should've concluded the moment Imran wins the jackpot money of Rs. 20 crores. Wasn't that his motive when he entered the game with his eyes wide open? So why this sudden urge to confront Sanjay Dutt after the game is over? Had the prize money doubled to Rs. 40 crores, it would've made sense. Or, for that matter, if he had a personal score to settle with Sanju, the game of death would've looked plausible. There's no motive in the first place.

Moreover, the sequence in the hospital, towards the end, may be true, medically speaking, but the question is, was it necessary in a film of this genre? Frankly, it robs the film of its seriousness and even compels you to break in a full-throated roar, a reaction that is completely unwarranted. Even Shruti Haasan's double role doesn't cut ice.

Soham Shah has made a stylish film and the fact remains that he has an eye for visuals. But Soham should've stuck to the spirit of the film, instead of getting into diversions [romance and the penultimate scene]. Salim-Sulaiman's music is vibrant and 'Aasma' is easily the pick of the lot. The background score [Amar Mohile] is electrifying. Santosh Thundiyil's cinematography matches international standards. Ditto for the sound design by Dwarak Warrier. Allan Amin's stunts and thrills are a major USP.

Sanju is perfect for this part and enacts it with natural ease. Actually, here's one role that only he could've portrayed so effectively. Imran is getting better with every film. Watch his helplessness at the start or his confidence when he takes to the stunts. Even towards the latter reels, he's very much in sync with his character.

Shruti Haasan is a star, no two opinions on that. The confidence with which she carries off this role just cannot be overlooked. Ravi Kishan is another scene-stealer. You are under the impression that he may get lost in the crowd, but he stands tall. The masses will love him.

Mithun Chakraborty is controlled and delivers a truly fine performance. Danny Denzongpa is, as always, so perfect. Very few actors have that ability to stand out in a crowd. He's one of them. Chitrashi is excellent. The sequence in the hospital is superb. Rati Agnihotri gets no scope.

On the whole, LUCK rides on star power, adrenaline-pumping thrills and a concept that's novel for the Indian screens. Despite some loose ends, these three factors primarily would ensure a Lucky journey at the box-office.

Imran Khan is intelligent and well read. Going by Kidnap and Luck, both brain-dead films, we seriously doubt his intelligence. He says he is choosy about his scripts but if this is what he chooses, he needs to alter his choice of scripts.

The promos of Luck were reminiscent of films like Dus, Cash and Dhoom. You know, the glossy, slick, action thriller types. Luck is glossy and glamourous but lacks in content.

Most of the characters in the film are lucky. That is why Don Sanjay Dutt chooses them to play a game based on luck. His associate Tamaang (Danny) picks Raghav (Ravi Kissen), Major Jabbar Singh (Mithun), Ram (Imran), Ayesha/Natasha (Shruti) and Shortcut (Chitrashi). They have to play a series of dangerous games. Gamblers from all over the world have put a bet on them. Based on their luck, they will survive or die.

The dialogues are the epitome of cheesy and childish. Here are a few samples: "Do bandook, ek goli, sir pe taani, khopdi khaali", "Insaan ki taqdeer aur luck nahi badalta, insaan ka waqt badalta hai", "Hum luck kharidte ya bechte nahi, sirf bhaade pe lete hai", "You are very lucky" and "Tumhare paas waqt kam hai, mere paas luck kam hai".

What is all this?

Most English movies use the f-word a lot but Luck uses the l-word a lot, like duh, as if we don't get it. Luck becomes a sort of inside joke, a morse code even.

The opening game scene where the characters stand in a circle in the desert and aim at the person next to them is a straight lift of 13 Tzameti. That movie was black and white with no picturesque locales and the scene was shot in a crowded room yet it had more impact than the glossy scene in Luck.

The actors have been let down by the poor direction. Imran is wooden and mechanical. In a few scenes, he reminds you of Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Na and that's when he is good. He should stick to romantic roles. Shruti Haasan has a gorgeous face, body and hair thanks to her mother Sarika but none of her parents' acting prowess. Her dialogue delivery is deadpan. Even children recite poetry with more expression and emotion.

Chitrashi Rawat gets into the skin of her over-confident character. She should try something new soon otherwise she will get typecast. You loathe Ravi Kissen. He is a lecherous serial killer with an annoying laugh that makes you frown. He is good at being bad. Danny and Mithun have not been wasted, their characters don't do justice to their talent. Why did they agree to do this movie? You think some of them are dead but they come back to life, like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

The pace isn't fast enough for a thriller. In the first hour, the characters are established. The twists in the end (about Shruti and Imran) are laughable and unnecessary. The climax scene on the train reminds you of video games like Contra and Mario where the hero has to overcome innumerable obstacles to reach his destination. Some scenes are disconnected thanks to sloppy editing.

Sanjay Dutt is the best of the lot. There are some things only he can do. I don't know anyone else who can carry off the punked up costumes in the title track. He is overweight yet handsome. He wows you with his impressive screen presence and personality. There is a smile on your face each time he walks his walk making you wish he had more screen time.

The music is catchy. The locales, especially the South African landscape is gorgeous. The scenes where Danny gambles on Imran's luck are interesting, especially the cigarette lighter one. The background score is impressive at times.

All in all, you don't feel very lucky after watching Luck. http://www.starboxoffice.com/movie/reviews.aspx?bid=2011/June/reviews_20110618_17
