'New York' not original?!?

'New York' may have spelt success and come back for Yash Raj films, but the makers of the film have not got a clean chit as yet. After being stuck in controversy of plagiarism for the soundtrack Junoon by music composer Pritam; it's now Aditya Chopra himself who is under the scanner.

Suchita Bhhatia a young writer has alleged that the story track of 'New York' was her idea and that she had approached Aditya Chopra with the idea. According to Suchita, Aditya Chopra had asked Arjun Sablok to get in touch with Suchita to whom she had narrated the story idea and which had earned her appreciation from the man in September 2006. She has also registered a complaint with Writers Association and written to Mr. Sablok and Aditya Chopra. However she hasn't received any response from either of them.

According to Rafiq Gangjee, Vice President Marketing & Communications Yash Raj Films, "It is unfortunate that this issue should come up after the film has released when the promotions for the same have been there since 12th Dec 2008 where the very same plot was clearly outlined. If she has been truly aggrieved it would have been well within her rights to have raised this issue over the past several months. To be raising this issue now can only be termed as opportunistic. As is well known, for a company like Yash Raj Films, which has been known to give breaks to a large number of budding writers and directors, there is absolutely no reason for us to resort to something like this. "

While Aditya Chopra has been unavailable for comments, Kabir Khan the director of 'New York' plans to take strict legal actions against Bhhatia.

Yash Raj Films to sue scriptwriter for New York charges

By Subhash K. Jha, July 1, 2009 - 15:45 IST

It looks like Suchita Bhatia who has leveled charges of plagiarism against the makers of New York is in trouble.

Yash Raj Films, the producers of New York, have decided to take legal action against Bhatia for alleging that the script which was made into New York was originally suggested to Yash Raj three years ago by her.

Confirming these developments, New York director Kabir Khan says, "This is really unfortunate. I wonder which cave this girl was living in so far to suddenly wake up five days after our film released to realize that New York is about three friends against a 9/11 backdrop."

Kabir sees this as nothing but opportunistic timing. "It's a great method of getting her 15 minutes of fame. Yes, we're planning to sue her and make an example of this sort of post-success harassment that filmmakers go through."

The director is very angry. "Why does one have to keep fighting to protect one's integrity? By suing this girl I hope to discourage such frivolous charges in the future."
