Success can be scary! Ask Pritam, who has been spending sleepless nights over the big question whether the Love Aaj Kal music would be as big a hit as Jab We Met. The music of Imtiaz Ali's new film is out and while the verdict is still not out, comparisons with the earlier soundtrack are obvious.
"Otai toh mushkil... shobai Jab We Met chaichhe," says the music director. "But the Jab We Met music only became popular after the film released. Apart from Mauja hi mauja, which was a hit from the time the album released."
The first Love Aaj Kal track to be 'seen' on TV is Twist where Saif is dancing at a nightclub. "I have used the Mann doley mera tann doley loop from Nagin and put a fresh spin to it," says Pritam. And before you jump to the conclusion that he has copied again, well, he has acquired the rights from HMV to use the song and has also given credit to Hemant Kumar for the original composition.
But the real twist lies elsewhere. A few weeks back after Imtiaz completed the film and showed the first cut to Pritam, he was shellshocked. "It was a brilliant film and I found my music so weak compared to the movie. I immediately told Imtiaz that I have to do something about it," is the candid confession from Pritam.
So what he did was completely rework two of the tracks. "There was no other option because otherwise the music would have seemed so flat compared to the film. Now the music's much better than what it was previously."
For the Calcutta bit in the film — a small part of the 1960s portion of the narrative — Pritam actually wanted to use Bengali music. "But when we tried it, it wasn't working. So we discarded it. It's really a very small portion of the movie but it's shot very well and Calcuttans would love to see the city as it was 50 years back."
Love Aaj Kal releases on July 31.
