New York Review
I came in the cinemas, excited to finally see my first bollywood movie this year, with expectations of this movie being a revelation, making me want to think, opening me up to some truths that I am not aware of, and that's what the movie has done!
The story of three friends in college is really feel-good, you instantly form a connection with the characters, 3 cute friends, who are enjoying their lives, enjoying their youth, and enjoying their friendship together, and their undying friendship for one another, everything is very connectable with your emotions.
Then comes the twist of the 9/11 attacks, and you'll see a normal person, a person like you, going through the life that you can't even imagine in your wildest dreams, you'll feel anger, sadness, and will get to know how gruesome life can be, I have no shame in accepting I hate the way America governs, and I hate this country, and this movie only makes me hate this country even more! Many people think that such disgusting life is only led by people of the third world countries, or people in history, but this incident is so recent it makes you want to cry, it is a true story, and it makes you want to scream, and ask what has changed? Why are innocent people, treated like this? Why?? Why?? For no reason, just because of your race you are treated like this? It makes you want to question our human race?
More importantly it addresses the issues, how are terrorist born? And the answer is, no one can be ready to risk their lives, kill people and do inhumane acts for no reason at all, they would've gone through shit, and that shit is normally given by the police, the law, something that all human beings rely on, it disgusts you, it makes you want to scream, but that is the truth!
A normal person, who saw the twin towers crash, saying 'those bloody terrorists' and some people instantly saying 'those muslims' we are harming the human race, here, just because a person from your nationality does something will that make you responsible for it? No we are part of a human race, we can't be punished for our religion or our culture! But since the human race has started this is what has happened! And seems like will continue to happen!
This movie makes you question a lot! It is not saying that terrorism is not bad, but is saying that everyone has a hand in it, everyone is responsible, cause everyone has hatred, and likes to blame one another for mishaps, and have so much hatred that can harm another person so much, that things can get more gruesome and difficult! This is what I feel the movie is essentially about! They take a real life incident to convey the message, how humans are being treated, how normal people go through such horrific conditions, and how people can harm people in such a big way, and how your pain and hatred, cause someone else's pain and hatred, how one terrorist who killed so many people in the 9/11 has made so many others a terrorist! This is what the movie is all about!
Now for the performances, Neil AWSUM, this guy is truly amazing, he is one awsum actor, I love him a lot, he played his character amazingly! John-I always get frustrated to see john in comic roles cause I really dun think he can pull it of well, this is one movie in which I loved john a lot, his acting was terrific, you feel his pain, he looked amazing and played his role very well, Katrine was also really good, really liked her in this movie! Irfan Khan was top-notch, the music was really good, I really love the song hai junoon! I respect aditya chopra as a writer, he is truly awsum! Amazing script! And this new director kabir khan is also very good!
Overall the movie is very thought provoking and very engaging, this movie should be watched! I give it 4/5
