Why is Deepika called a 'Supermodel'?

Whenever the media write a piece of news on this leggy lass, she is referred to as a 'Supermodel' (most of the time anyway). Before her Bollywood career, Deepika was a very popular Indian model on the ramp, for ads and music vids, but where did the 'Supermodel' tag come from?

From Twiggy, to Cindy, Naomi, Linda to Gisele. All the major Supermodels have come from the west, and our Indian models have found it very difficult to make their place on the catwalks of Paris, London, New York and Milan.

The only Indian face to make her mark (and even that very recently!) on the international scene is Lakshmi Menon who has worked for Hermes, Givenchy, H&M, Max Mara etc

So how is Deepika a Supermodel, when she is only known for her modeling portfolio in India?
