'Kareena is in the league of Aamir and SRK'
by Amrita Mukherjee

When we heard Saif Ali Khan's flight had landed at 5.15pm in Dubai, we were sure the interview fixed for 6pm would be pushed back. But our contact person at the Ramee Royal Hotel ' where Saif made an appearance at the nightclub ' insisted the star would be on schedule. And he was.

Dressed in a simple black T and bandana ' this time wrapped around his wrist as a style statement ' he finished his conversation with Kareena over the phone, and proceeded to bowl us over with his looks, maturity and super intelligent takes on love and Bollywood. Extracts from a fun one-on-one interview...

Kareena said in an interview that she keeps asking you to marry her...

Since marriage is the culmination of any relationship, people are always rushing us into it. We definitely didn't get into a relationship without thinking of the future. But apart from just signing on a piece of paper and having children, I don't think we are missing out on marriage at the moment. So neither is Kareena after me, nor am I after her to get married.

Is it because it will be hard for Kareena to do the balancing act?

She is the kind of woman who can give 100 per cent to her career and 100 per cent to her home. Not many actresses have dedication like her. Her level of dedication can only be equated to that of Aamir and Shah Rukh. I want her to fly and soar to the zenith of success. I am not as big a star as she is. I don't even know if I will ever reach that level.

A relationship is not about controlling a person. It's about being there for each other and not being insecure. What will we talk about at the end of the day if we are not working?

Do you ever feel that too much is being said and written with regards to your relationship?

Yes, I do feel that. When we started dating there was too much speculation about our relationship, so at the time it was fine to talk about our commitment to each other. Now it's time for our work to do the talking.

Right now your colleagues (Aamir and SRK) are bashing each other in the media. Why have you never indulged in such a public display of aggression?

I think we get enough attention anyway, there is no point looking for more with quotable quotes. I would prefer to be boring than make an interview sensational at other people's expense.

When shall we see you doing a Langda Tyagi again?

I don't think I will be able to do another role like that [in Omkara] because it's very taxing to play an evil person. I would prefer something like Race, where my character has shades of grey. Even Ek Hasina Thi is fine. Right now I am looking forward to Imtiaz Ali's Love Aj Kal with Deepika.

How do you feel when you read that you were angry with Kareena for kissing Sly Stallone on screen?

I feel sad. We are professionals and we have to do every kind of scene. If there is no trust, there is no point in having a relationship. That way I should be more worried about Akshay, since he is the hero, than Stallone. Right?

Dubai drama!

"Last time we were here, Kareena and I went shopping and we were followed around by 1,000 people. I get more attention with Kareena around, but we are used to it by now. We happily continued shopping."

Saif's Dubai plans

"People have this perception that Dubai is only about snazzy buildings. But there are such beautiful locales here. While shooting for Race I was bowled over by the desert and Jebel Hafeet was amazing. We plan to shoot here for Agent Vinod directed by Shriram Raghavan, which is an espionage-terrorism film."

Saif on... bickering
"I would prefer to be boring than make an interview sensational at other people's expense."

Saif on... Kareena
"I want Kareena to fly."

Oh saifuu!
KAREENA DOESNT REALIZE HOW LUCKY SHE IS! Now i know why she keeps syaing saif is the guy anyoen would want. He has put her above himself and genuinely wants the best for her. Oh me getting so emotional! SAIF JAAN! PLZ MAKE A CARBON COPY OF YOURSELF PLZZZZ!!! I dont even care if you're 20 yrs older, just come to meeeee, bhool jayein saraa jahaan. COme to meeee, hum banalein apne nahi jagaaa! 😳
On a more serious note. What I love most about saif is the fact that he comes across as veyr differnet form other desi men. MOst men have an ego when it ocmes to careers, and especially if their women start to do better than them, that doesnt go down too well with em. Saif openly aknowledges the fact that kareena is a bigger star than him, and then adds that he wants her to continue to soar. And he genuinely means it.
As a feminist, I find his words refreshingly romantic! His mindset is one that I want in a man!
Bless you saif! And I wanna see you soaring right along with your woman, up to the zenith of success.

ROFLMAO. I sincerely hope Kareena does not have Aamir's level of dedication towards relationships.
The only shades that character had were ones that belonged to Gucci or other shade brands. It is pathetic that Saif considers playing a character that is actually both well-developed and realistic "taxing" and would rather act the role of a character who grunts, with zero personality and a lot of styling factor.

What's wrong with what Saif said? Irfan Khan, one of the MOST talented actors in the industry turned down the role of a terrorist because he said he didnt feel comfortable enacging such a role because it takes a toll on him to get to know a terrorists phyche so closely. This shows what a serous actor saif si that he completely submerges himself in teh character, to such an extent that he starts to feel it leave an impact on him personally.

I know dude! I'm like...blown away by saif at the moment. As if I already wasnt completely swept off my feet by this guy, now more than ever, I'm thinking...is he a dream?
I know that for me, if my guy said that...I'd just die right then and there. That kinda support and encouragement and such genuine honesty where he aknowledges that I'm the bigger star, I'm better at the game than he is, I'm the better player, I have the better career. I know that for a guy in general, their egos get in the way of just owning up to the simplest things. But for him to put out there that he KNOWS that Kareena is the bigger star. I'm just like..wow.
I have not met any desi guy with this mentality. They all have this superior attiude, no matter how broad minded htey make themselves out to be. There are very few with this kinda mindset. VERY VERY FEW

I personally haven't read the article/ watched the interview in which Irfan stated that however even if that's what he said, it isn't the same thing as Saif's. Assuming Irfan claimed to dislike the effects of observing the psyche of a terrorist, it can be concluded that his assertion was stated based on his moral beliefs. Saif's statement has no such factors backing that. There is also that he juxtaposed his statement with the reference to the character that he enacted in Race that doesn't appeal to me. Iago is a morally ambiguous character - not a purely "ZOMG!evil" character like that of a terrorist would be. Iago did things for personal gain unlike those of a terrorist which are often connected with religion -- as such, huge difference between what Irfan allegedly refused to play and what Saif prefers not to do.
As for impact --- I can't fathom how a lot of the characters he's played would impact him in anyway. Johnny Depp's Gilbert Grape? I can see that. Saif's Tyagi? Not seeing it.

Irfan said that he wouldnt enact hte role of a terrorist no matter how much money he was offered because he finds hteir mindset very disturbing. I dont htink he referenced religion in any way. Similarly, Iago's character, or Langda Tyagi's character, is inherently shown as evil in the sense that after a while he displays no morality or regret when his actions resulted in teh deaths of his supposed "friends".
He abused his wife, and towards the end, in order to salvage himself, he was even willing to accuse Konkona's character of having an affair.
I dont know how else to label Langda Tyagi's character if not evil. His character in Race on the other hand had certain dark shades, but he was not an intentionally bad character. He still held morals and beliefs.

Definitely, I agree with you on that count. It is refreshing to see how supportive he is of Kareena. In that sense, he is always self-deprecating. "Kareena is a bigger star than me" or how nervous he was working with SRK in KHNH until he had to be reassured. But I want him in more roles like Langda Tyagi, that was one of the most monumental roles of his career. And I think it was a daring role for him to play, and I liked him in Ek Hasina Thi. To be honest, I disliked his character in Being Cyrus more (loved his portrayal, just did not like the character) though my memory is fuzzy of that film because it was kind of boring so I don't remember much.
