Comfort zone
His date diary is packed with stage shows, shooting schedules and appointments with eager-beaver producers who mostly want to cash in on his new-found glory. And of course, Saif Ali Khan's enjoying every moment of his star status. At home, the chote nawab's playing host to friends from the US. As he spots the "Oh no" look on my face, he chuckles reassuringly. "Just give me a moment, I'll do the interview." A few minutes later, he joins me in his study. "I'm so happy with all the awards and applause Dil Chahta Hai has brought me," he smiles as he lights up a cigarette. "Know something? Even my dad called me up to congratulate me. His appreciation meant the world to me." Right now he's on a high and can't stop grinning. For the present at least, life seems to be a bed roses for Saif. Agrees he, "I'm happy and more confident of the work I'm doing.
If working out, having a good body and looking great tantamounts to aping Salman, I take that as a compliment |
Speaking Hindi also comes more naturally to me now. It felt great to be a part of Dil Chahta Hai which is more in tune with the present generation." Exhaling smoke he continues, "For the first time in my career, my success hasn't been soured by a backlog of films likely to make me cringe with discomfort. After DCH, I can actually view my next lot of releases with a certain amount of pride. I'm only 31 years old. A lot of guys actually start out at this age. I started young and it took me a long time to figure out what I really wanted to do. I'm grateful to the audience for being so very patient with me." Looks like the film industry has rediscovered Saif. The buzz is that Govinda had him thrown out of Yahoo. He immediately bristles, "Hey, Govinda had nothing to do with it, I walked out of the film. I did try to call him to explain my move but..." After a pause, he continues, "I was under the impression that Yahoo was inspired by an English hit.

Later I learnt that only certain characters had been taken from the film. Nobody lied to me, there was just a communication problem. Since I was uncomfortable about the project, I opted out." Stretching his legs he informs, "I want to have fun when I'm working. I've done so many bad films. Nobody remembers the guys who made them but I still get the flak." If he's made up his mind to be cautious, how come he ended up doing Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein? "I did that film for the money. I was told it was a guest appearance which wouldn't hurt my career. But at the end, they forgot to put the guest appearance label before my name. Mercifully, they kept me out of the publicity. I don't want to sound as if I'm selling out on the film because it didn't run. But the original Minalli looked very cool to me. It was a much better film and very raw. It's strange that the same guy made both the films."
I don't see film-makers like Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar coming to me with solo-hero projects |
He pauses to pour over some photographs of his in a newspaper. "I'm looking cool," he beams. Talk about vanity. "I'm not vain but I like to think I'm sexy," he retorts. "I wasn't born with a face that has hero written all over it. I've heard people call me a funny looking guy. It's taken a lot of effort to look like the sterotype hero, a man the youth can identify with." The general feeling is that he's taken to cloning Salman Khan, who's certainly not the right guy to emulate. "There's a certain warmth that draws me to Salman," Saif explains, adding, "I don't consciously copy anyone. I'm an original. But yes, if working out, having a good body and looking great tantamounts to aping Salman, then thanks. I take that as a compliment." According to the actor, the only man he has ever idolised is his dad, Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. "It's not because I'm a fan of his or out of blind loyalty. He's a dignified gentleman who commands respect. I want to be like him." Describing his relationship with his two sisters Sabha and Soha he states, "I'm not up-to-date with their everyday events. But I do know their boyfriends and what's happening in their lives. It's more an emotional thing. I haven't grown up fighting and bickering with them because there's a difference in our ages. When I was 18, they were just 12 and 10. I'm fairly possessive about them but I'm nothing like the cliched psycho brothers Hindi films portray." Today, it's not only acting that excites him. He also enjoys being a dad to his two kids. "I'm not wild any more because there are so many responsibilities. I love chilling out at home with Amrita, Sarah and Ibrahim. I'm enjoying life finally."
