Gone are the days when horror films used to have poor picturisation and B- grade stars. Today, film-makers are presenting their films in a sophisticated manner, which appeals to multiplex audiences. Thus Fridays seem to be getting freakier as Bollywood horror films are making registers ring at the box office.
Last year's Phoonk, 1920 and the recently released Raaz - The Mystery Continues (RTMC) have all done quite well during their opening weekends. According to the reports RTMC registered an 80 per cent start, whereas Vikram Bhatt's 1920 started out with 60 per cent. RGV's scream-fest, Phoonk, surprised movie critics by garnering 90 per cent occupancy during its opening weekend. Even though every horror story runs along the same lines, the genre has moved on.

Phoonk
None can be as better as Director Ram Gopal Varma when it comes to horror films. After giving hit films like Raat and Bhoot he presented Phoonk last year. If you are wondering on what made Phoonk interesting, then the answer is its subject. There haven't been many films made on Black Magic and this was the winning point for RGV and his Phoonk. Though Phoonk had conventional gimmicks to create fear by creepy background score, hovering camera movements and shocking sound effects, it managed to deliver according to audience's expectations.
1920
After the success of Dino Morea and Bipasha Basu starrer Raaz, Vikram Bhatt made a come back in horror genre once again with 1920. Some important factors that worked for the film were Adah Sharma's brilliant performance, scary background score by Salim Sulaiman and the film's finesse in art direction and cinematography.

Raaz - The Mystery Continues (RTMC)
Raaz - The Mystery Continues had all important ingredients that ideally a horror film should have. Interesting script, excellent background score, superb art direction and cinematography and a strong star cast that draws audiences towards theatres. RTMC has literally re-defined the horror genre in Bollywood.
