^Jhustju, I am sick of seeing those larger than life stories, houses, Red, Blue, Green dashes of colors. KJo and SLB have spoiled Indian cinema just like how Ekta Kapoor has done for TV serials. They churn out mediocre stuff and people consider it masterpieces. Woh Saat Din was simple. Add lots of Red color to it and it became Hum Dil De chuke Sanam.

YRF used to be different too. So were Barjatyas. Every movie which Barjatyas make now is a remake of their original which Tarachand Barjatya made.

Chitchor - MPKDH
Nadiya ke paar - HAHK
Tapasya - EVAB

Now they add glamor and glitz and there isn't any originality.

The most abused genre is Comedy. There was a time when Hrishikesh Mukherjee with his comedy films was considered an excellent film maker and now we have tomfoolery in the name of comedy.

Jaane bhi do yaaron was the best Satire ever. There is also Chupke Chupke I love.

Jaane bhi was made by Kundan Shah and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. VVC also have a thriller Khamosh. I think poor guy couldn't keep up with the manipulation of the current industry.

Aamir Khan even after a Mela, Raja Hindustani, Fanaa and such mediocrity is now revered as the actor with substance because of being exclusive and having a good promotional strategy. So imagine the plight of rest of the actors. When Ghajini becomes a movie par excellence we know what Indian cinema has become.

In this present scenario the some directors whose work I believe could bring back good cinema is Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra, Farhan Akhtar and Imtiaz Ali. I can't think of any actors, male or female.

You have said everything that needs to be said about this topic. That is EXACTLY the way I feel, which is why I understand how frustrated flaviya is. Man, I miss Hrishikesh Mukherjee's films so much. The thing is that I have such a bad opinion of YRF is because it is hard to remember how they used to be. I need to go back and see those films you mentioned of the Barjaytas sometime, maybe my opinion will change about their films.
Some great comedies I haven't seen mentioned here. I guess I was mostly thinking of the dramatic films, but I love Angoor, Chhoti Si Baat, and Chashme Buddoor. I happen to be a big Deepti Naval fan; I think she is very underappreciated as an actor.

Mrs. Ackles, I have to say I love the first half of Guide alot. From a feminist perspective, it was nice to see a female role like the one Waheeda played especially considering at the time it was made. But I I really did not like the story being shifted towards Raju in the second half. For me that was a tad bit of a letdown in an otherwise beautiful film.

MrsAckles: I guess the reason I did not include guide was as cinnamon said I found the second half flawed which yeah is the problem I have with Guide the book as well and I have an irrational dislike of Dev Anand.
Maya: I agree with what you said on everything. One of the reasons I like the movies which starred Farookh Sheikh, Amol Palekar, Deepthi Naval etc was that they did need to ham it up or be loud or yell to prove they were great actors. None of our actors today could convincingly carry a Chasme Badoor on their shoulders. The fault is also ours. We like good looking actors with fit bodies who can dance. Which is why Abhay Deol or Vinay Pathak are unappriciated by the masses.

If we are so frustrated seeing the type of cinema being churned out in the name of being "different" then imagine what Naseeruddin Shah and the likes must be thinking.

CR, Yashraj's old cinema is good. They caught up impressing NRIs.

Barjatyas are one of the best in Indian cinema prior to 90s. Watch Dosti, Nadiya Ke paar etc. Actually go to Rajshri and catch the list.
