When Abhay modernised Devdas

Mumbai: A brainwave, while reading an abridged version of Sarat Chandra Chatterjee's Devdas, led Abhay Deol to come up with an idea of adapting the novel in the modern-day scenario. Abhay reportedly got inspired to read the original novel after he spent an entire afternoon watching Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai's Devdas. In fact, the storyline of the film was also chalked out by Abhay. That explains why the credit line of the film mentions his name as the person who created the concept of the movie.

Abhay says, "Yes, I came up with the concept. For a long time I have been thinking about it. Basically I was inspired by the novel Devdas. It is an iconic subject, timeless and I thought to modernise the same would be interesting. It bridges the gap between generations. It is timeless in that sense."

Abhay then narrated the concept to his close friends, one of whom suggested the name of Anurag Kashyap as he has handled unusual and off-beat subjects in the past. "So finally I narrated the concept to Anurag Kashyap. He went quiet for half an hour, completely lost, visualising the film. Then he decided to make the film," Abhay adds.

Dev.D is a modern-day love story. It's set in a generation that straddles between eastern roots and western sensibilities. It explores the dingy, morbid, dark underbelly of Delhi. It takes us from the sprawling mustard fields to a riot of neon; from Punjabi ballads to mayhem in rock.
