Rahul-Anjali, Raj-Simran, Veer-Zaara…you can add one more pair to the legendary love stories of King Khan : the hit-pair of Surinder-Taani.
The keenly and eagerly awaited combo of Aditya Chopra (once again directing after the ever-green blockbuster Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and superhit Mohabbatein) and Shahrukh - the hearthrob of many teenage girls and aunties across India has FINALLY arrived and the wait was well worth it. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi truly is a masterpiece from this now legendary combo.
First things first, this is no ordinary love story. In true Yashraj tradition, this brand that has provided so many classic love stories in the past has unveiled a new and innovative story, the story of a simpleton in a small town.
Lets clarify a few things:
* This is not a film based on a dancing competition as speculated by the media
* Shahrukh Khan is not seen in a double role
In true fashion, Aditya Chopra has given a film in true tradition with oodles of romance emotions, drama and stunning songs. The film has soul and will leave you spellbound, panting and breathing for more as you leave the cinema hall. The repeat value is tremendous with many sterling moments of high emotions and drama.
The story is very simple yet the treatment is what will leave the viewer speechless. Surinder (SRK) is a simple, fun loving man in his middle age. He works at a powerplant and goes through many daily routines and rituals. A today's man, he cooks, cleans, washes, irons all by himself. Unlucky in love - he never quibs and leaves everyone with a smile with his humourous sense of geekiness. Oneday, a young lady walks into his life - Taani (the stunning yet cute Anoushka Sharma) who is the exact opposite of Surinder. This vivacious, flamboyant, bindass girl immediately brings a smile to Surinder's face, but he fears to tell her how he feels.
Some brilliant scenes unfold at work with Surinder trying to impress Taani. Watch out for the scene where he brings breakfast and a cup of hot tea to her desk but slips at the last moment leading to him falling on Taani - the audience paused for a moment and belted a sigh of relief as Surinder was ok. Another scene where Surinder stays behind after work to help Taani complete some work brings together a sweet moment for the two. Another teerjerking scene where Surinder consoles Taani after the death of her beloved auntie will leave you all weepy and teery eyed. Before Taani realises it, she is falling for the geeky antics of Surinder without Surinder noticing.
A classic tale of two people loving each other but neither prepared to tell each other with the fear of rejection begins to unfold. Surinder feels he needs to change and scouts the help of his best friend played by the superb Vinay Pathak to change his whole demeaneur in an audacious bid to win the heart of Taani. From here on in, the audience is treated to dancing competitions, sum wrestling and a stunningly choreographed Tribute song on yesteryear stars Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna & Rishi Kapoor with guest appearances by 5 stunning bollywood actresses. SRK displays like no other that he is the King of all tribute songs!
A mature love story, with characters that stand out and stunning set design, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi will leave you brimming with smiles. Just when you think the film will be predictable Yashraj potboiler - it hits you with a story of a simpleton playing and converting himself into something different but the soul-mate of his life loved him for who he was. The irony will leave you sympathetic towards the lead pair, urging and hoping that they will find a way to be together forever.
In many ways Rab Ne…is very much the deconstruction of DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE and SRK's Raj/Rahul persona. But this deconstruction will touch every female in the heartland of the country.
The screenplay and story never let you down. The pace is perfect and the treatment to what is a simple story is crucially superb. Hats off Aditya Chopra for a sterling comeback - the guy with the midass touch is back with a bang and his masterful storytelling has not gone missing at all. The songs are excellently woven into a tight narration and the writing and dialogues is top-notch.
Performance wise, Vinay Pathak will sweep all the supporting actor awards next year with a sterling effort in grooming Surinder into Raj.
Anoushka Sharma could not have asked for a better debuting platform! Understatingly beautiful, she has excellent dialogue delivery and tremendous appeal for youngsters across India. Cheekly innocent, her comic timing and dancing capability will leave a memory in your minds as you leave the theatre. She will bag all the major debutant awards.
What can one say about SRK that has not been said in the past? His ability to carry Yashraj's problems singlehandedly is well noted, but this is his biggest moment where he rekindles the energy and flamboyancy of old and delivers what can only be described as his greatest performance ever. A challenging role - nearly a double role, it would be difficult to imagine any other actor essaying the diversity so effortlessly. In a word - UNFORGETTABLE! The way he emotes, the way he dances in his impish style, the way he smiles, his accent - everything is so unblemished and infectious that his legion of female fans will fall in love with him for the upteenth time.
On the whole, Rab Ne…is a winner all the way. From direction, to writing, to music to performances this will set a number of records across the country in the coming weeks. Expect a very good opening, expect this light entertainer to stick around for a number of weeks - expect a sure-shot blockbuster! Truly every ordinary jodi has an extra-ordinary love story to tell and don't miss this one! Watch it with your nearest and dearest and feel all again what it is to love the simple things in life.
