Image makeovers of the decade
Just when everyone had written off the Anry Young Man and journalists were ready to pen his obituary, Amitabh Bachchan made a comeback… on the small screen. He grew a French beard, kept it white but chose to dye his hair black. And the moment he appeared as the warm and cordial host, he rewrote history like no other Bollywood star ever had.
Vidya Balan in Heyy Babyy
Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om
The choice between Shah Rukh's look in Chak De! India and Om Shanti Om was tad difficult. But then again we can't think of another man who brought the six-pack abs into the public vocabulary as he did. Salman Khan may have been the original macho man. But at 40 plus, Shah Rukh toned his body and showed the world the difference between a star and a brat.
Here was yet another Manish Malhotra disaster in which he wasn't alone. While Heyy Babyy worked wonders at the box office, Ta Ra Rum Pum disappeared from the screens even before you could finish saying its title. Rani was always the girl-next-door who suddenly showed up in mini skirts, something that not many from the audience could take. She tried playing sexy again in her next film Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and failed miserably again.
Aamir Khan in Dil Chahta Hai
Many consider Dil Chahta Hai a watershed film in Bollywood history. And they aren't entirely wrong. For its time, DCH came across as a film with a fresh look. Aamir Khan sported a goatee and a hairstyle that was designed specifically for the film. Aamir has ever since experimented with his look for every other film. But it was Dil Chahta Hai, which will probably remain in public memory for the longest time.Aishwarya Raiin Dhoom 2
She lost oodles of weight, toned herself and wore a tanned look that made every man weak in his knees. Her annoying voice throughout the film and below average dialogue delivery notwithstanding, Ash knocked a punch simply be showing the world that she wasn't remotely an ice maiden.
It's one thing showing off your six pack abs on a 70 mm screen. But it takes some gumption to actually have a paunch for a film and go about in a towel showing it off. But Abhishek did just that and even though the particular shot made us cringe, we must confess the look as a whole in the film
Dressing up a young something in almost nothing, making her wear a black swimsuit and run on a beach was not something many people could imagine. Ram Gopal Varma managed to pull this feat with some assistance from Manish Malhotra. The master of sequins also got the only Filmfare Award for the best design… all for showing Urmila in what she should have ideally been in anyway
Sanjay Dutt in the Munnabhai series
Long before that guy who mowed down sleeping pedestrians came into the picture, Sanjay Dutt was known as the Brat of Bandra. Son of movie star Sunil Dutt, Sanjay probably managed to get into all sorts of trouble. But it was left to Hirani's Munnabhai MBBS to change it all. Playing the affable goonda with a golden heart, Sanjay Dutt's image underwent a complete transformation after this film. So much so when judge Kode sentenced him to six years in jail the nation cried for Munnabhai as much as Sanjay Dutt. So much was the power of one film.
For the longest time the guy was known for his action films. Slowly but steadily with films like Garam Masala and Hera Pheri, the actor began to make his foray into the comedy genre. Then with films like Namaste London and Jaan-E-Mann Akshay Kumar firmly established himself as a romantic hero. Then came 2007, when everything began going in his favour. Being the one not to miss out on an opportunity, Akki made the most and ever since there has been no looking back
