In an exclusive interview, superstar Kareena Kapoor opens up about family approval, marriage, kids and the challenges of being in love.
In the year since Kareena and Saif Ali Khan openly declared their love, much has happened in the superstar's life. Professionally, Imtiaz Ali's Jab We Met took her to new heights and won her five Best Actress awards. Personally, her love life made headlines for her off-screen pairing with big love Saif.
Excerpts from the interview:
What do you expect out of a marriage?
I want to get married and have children. I would do anything to keep a relationship going. For me, time is a very precious commodity and I'm always there for Saif. And that says a lot. It's very easy to talk about fidelity, loyalty and swimming the seven seas but considering the lives we lead, I think the most important thing in a relationship is the amount of time you can spend with each other.
Do you discuss past relationships?
Not really. I respect the fact that Saif was married before and has two lovely children. I have been a fan of Amrita Singh. I haven't met her ever but I know her through her films. For me, she'll always have a place of importance in his life because she is Saif Ali Khan's first wife and the mother of his children. And, I've told Saif this. I would want her to have that kind of respect always. This is what my parents have taught me. At the end of the day, it was just a marriage that didn't work out. I have always encouraged Saif to be friends with her because I think that would be great. I guess they will just need time but that's something that they would need to deal with. I will always respect her. As far as any other relationship of Saif is concerned, I don't think they really mattered.
Do Saif and you talk about marriage?
Of course, we do talk about the future. If I was to imagine what it would be like 30 or 40 years from now, I see Saif and me on a yacht, sailing across the world.
Saif talks on Kareena:
Our living apart from each other reminds me of my mum's [Sharmila Tagore] letters that she used to write to my father [Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi] when he used to be away from home for days while playing international cricket. She used to decide on the spot where they could meet.
Since Kareena and I are not doing too many films together also, we need to be strong and have a lot of love and trust to make our relationship work. Since we stay apart from each other, it's also very exciting whenever we meet. It has kept our relationship as intoxicating as ever. People often tend to not take our relationship so seriously. So we need to be almost spiritual to make it successful.
But when you are with the right person, things follow naturally and you are not interested in anything else. I'm definitely monogamous. I feel it's far more sexier than being promiscuous.
Saif on having a family with Kareena:
Yes, we talk about settling down together, having children and holidays together. Kareena is very loving and she is a family-oriented girl despite what she portrays on screen. Children are something that she is looking forward to and I know that she will give her 100 per cent in that department. I'm a bit partial to girls. But a girl and a boy are great. Two girls and two boys get even better. Actually it will depend on the money I have as raising kids is an expensive proposition. But yes, I love children and I'm looking forward to it.
