From Showman Ghai to Showdown Ghai? Filmmaker Subhash Ghai has been in the news, but not just for the right reasons.
Controversies abound him and we've heard many a fall-out stories between him and some of the finest actors in the industry.
Ghai confronts these 'controversies' and tells us as it is…
You are known to make superstars out of newcomers. But you did work with Shah Rukh and Ash in between. And now you are back to casting newcomers?
"In my career, I've groomed actors into stardom only for one reason - I never wanted to work with superstars. I wanted to create them because then they respect you and look up to you. After three years, when they change, I take on other newcomers. Right from the beginning I have worked with Shatrughan Sinha who was playing a villain that time instead of Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan or Kamal Haasan. The moment an actor considers himself to be a 'superstar', they are good for the audiences but not for my relaxation, peace of mind and creative space."
But why not superstars?
"A director is the chief of the unit and shouldn't be intimidated by the stars only because 'Filmfare' has given them few awards. An actor must respect you, have faith in you. 'Superstars' have these wrong notions that films run only because of them. Also, the stars are always politically correct when they say that a good script is essential, et al, but deep inside all they want are directors, who worship them and not the ones who work on their own terms and conditions."
Apparently, according to many actors, you are egoistic…
"I don't have an ego nor am I tough to work with. I have made films with Dilip Kumar, Shah Rukh and Anil Kapoor.
It's just that I should be comfortable with the people I work."
Apparently you had once quoted that, 'Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor have taken you for granted'?
"Not true. Sanju, Anil and Jackie are family to me. I'd like to work with them whenever I have the right script for them. And even if we have any differences at all, we sort it out immediately without wasting any time. Either I call them or they call me."
You had a fall out with 'golden girl' Madhuri Dixit, too, we hear?
"These are tabloid talks. Madhuri is very close to me. We have a certain understanding. I've never had any issues with her, Anil, Jackie or Sanju."
Are you still upset with Shahid and Kareena's 'unprofessional behaviour' during '36 China Town's' press conference?
"It was just a misunderstanding. Shahid and Kareena weren't informed about a photo session post press conference so they left. So I called them up saying, 'Where are you guys, come back here?' This was overheard by some media man and he blew it out of proportion unnecessarily. Shahid, Kareena are like my children so even if I shout at them, it's out of affection and not humiliation."
Akshaye Khanna was upset with you for not promoting him well in your last few films?
"Akshaye did call me and speak to me about it. I told him, 'If a movie has to work, it will. No three or four hoardings can help you'. But actors are insecure and childish and thus jab kuch dost milke unko bhadka dete hain (when a few friends instigate them), they do such things. Akshaye in particular is like a son to me; he knows that and thus reserves his spoilt childish behaviour only for me."
You gave a huge break to Mahima in 'Pardes'. How come you haven't worked with her again?
"Mahima and I meet, we share a cordial relationship and I really feel for her. She is a good actress and a good-looking girl. She just needs a stroke of luck. We groom actors, make movies for them and when they become stars, they manage their own careers. When newcomers get 2-3 hits under their belt, they go berserk. Fame spoils their brain and they make wrong choices, repent, and then wonder where they went wrong."
'Yaadien' didn't do well. Are you willing to work with Hrithik post 'Dhoom2'?
"Before the release of 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai', Rakesh Roshan had asked me to cast Hrithik. And I did that. But before 'Yaadien' was released, 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai' went on to become such a huge hit that 'Yaadien', which was actually a film about Jackie Shroff and his three daughter's, was perceived as a Hrithik Roshan movie and thus didn't meet their expectations. It did give me a dent. However, I would love to work with Hrithik again."
Shah Rukh and you have your differences….
"We have our differences, but who doesn't? Deep inside we have love for each other. He's a superstar and I smile at it. I treat him like a kid. He tells me, "Abhi mein itna bada bangaya abhi to mujhe bada man lijiye" (I've become so big now, at least consider me big now!) and I laugh and say, 'You're the same naughty Shah Rukh for me as you were in 'Pardes'. He is an intelligent actor, I am happy for him!"
Apparently you had requested Salman to lower his rate, he didn't and since then things didn't work out between you two.
"Such a thing never happened. Salman and I have great respect for each other. I'll never work with anyone who challenges my self-esteem. Salman, on the contrary, has a great heart and is like a child, one of the finest persons in the industry. In fact, I'm making 'Mein Yuvraj', a film set in 2008 in Europe, soon, with Salman, Zayed, and Anil Kapoor. It is a total entertainer with lots of music and humour."
