Karan Johar dresses up Shah Rukh Khan

25th June 2007 22.07 IST
By Aparajita Ghosh

Besides his filmmaking talent, Karan Johar is also known for his fashion sense.

It is no secret that Karan has been designing clothes for his good friend Shah Rukh Khan for a long time now. He chose Shah Rukh's outfits in Farah Khan's flick Main Hoon Na and now he has turned SRK's dress designer for Farah's latest film Om Shanti Om.

Farah says she has full confidence in Karan's fashion sense. And she roped him for OSO because the film has SRK in two different looks.

In the first half of the film, SRK plays a struggling actor in 1970s. In these portions he will be seen wearing bell-bottoms and printed shirts with long collars.

In the second half of the film, SRK plays an actor in contemporary times. His look for these portions will be very stylish and chic.

Karan Johar humbly confesses that he relied a great deal on his assistant Shiraz to select SRK's outfits in the film. Shiraz had his task cut out to get the right fabric for the dresses. Karan did the final selection and decided on the colours, cuts and fittings.

Alongside Karan, Farah Khan was there to constantly give her inputs as to what kind of dresses she wanted SRK to wear in the film.

Because Farah, Karan and SRK are close friends, the work turned out to be fun together for them.

Introducing Deepika Padukone

She is the queen of Indian fashion arena; Deepika Padukone has taken the fashion world by storm ever since she was seventeen. Deepika is the daughter of the world's 1980 badminton champion, Prakash Padukone and Ujjala Padukone. She became known internationally after her brief stint with Maybelline.

Now that she has achieved quite good success on the runway, Deepika is doing her first Bollywood film with none other than Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om. This Farah Khan movie is her first in Bollywood but not her debut in films; she just finished the film-'Aishwarya' in Kannada. So what does this much talked about new comer has to say regarding her talents and assets, "I don't mind wearing a bikini because I know that I can carry one off well. As long as I am enjoying, I have no qualms whatsoever." Wow what a surprise for Bollywood! Surely no lead lady apart from Mallika Sherawat came with such bold statements in Bollywood.

Driven by the Devil

Text by Manjula Sen
Published: Volume 15, Issue 2, February, 2007

Popular brand ambassador, iconic superstar of the silver screen...and now, quiz master in the reinvented Kaun Banega Crorepati... the energetic actor is on a continuous roll. Verve takes a look at its first encounter with the multi-talented Shah Rukh Khan

Fans had better not put him on a pedestal or think they own him. Shah Rukh Khan gives but does not necessarily share. "I am not a hero. I am like a cigarette: experience at own risk. But many people turn around and say, 'you owe it to society'! I don't owe a damn to society. What I owe them is, you pay me and I will entertain you. I will sing, dance, make you laugh or cry. If you watch me on video, I don't even owe you that much. I have no social or moral obligation or value judgements."

To telescope the 90s' star soul, bookmark Khan. Packaged to suit inconsistent times, intelligent, opportunity-driven, with a set of priorities and the freedom to choose.... He can be pilloried and praised for the same thing - giving so much of himself. But the mantra of Yeh dil maange more is pure strategy.

"If you don't talk openly about yourself, you become an enigma. My strategy is to talk so much that nobody wants to pry into what I actually am. So what I really am is a complete secret." It is an intelligent strategy that succeeds. There are few questions that he will not field. Is he gay? Well, many think so because, "I am more comfortable with men than with women but I will only have a woman masseuse...."

The search for an audience began on a painful note. A back injury, while playing football deflected the Delhi schoolboy's goal to be a sportsman and he took up drama with Barry John's Theatre Action Group. His first public stage appearance was as the Wizard of Oz in a St. Columbus School version of the play. "Barry is my guru in terms of whatever I know. Another teacher I owe is Brother Eric D'Souza. He put me in many plays."

Television had already made this Delhi-based actor popular, only to lose him to films with just the right touch of drama. Dil Aashna Hai happened when he finally realised that the dogged caller to Delhi was not some crank but Hema Malini, calling to offer him a role in her first film. She had seen him in serials like Circus and Fauji. "When my mother died of cancer I just wanted to take a break and came to Mumbai for a year. I thought I would go back after a couple of films. I still haven't...."

As people ebb and flow around him, whether at Film City or at Mehboob Studio in Bandra, he introduces present company to co-star, directors, M.F. Husain; friend to everyone who stops to chat. Politeness is never at odds with shades of reserve or mirth. As long as you treat him with respect, the courtesy will be returned…. "I have always been an arrogant and pompous actor, not a person. And there is a difference. It's been 10 years now and nobody seems to understand that. They all think I am very arrogant but I am very proud of what I do and I take great pride in how I act." And risk is an overrated word. "If someone says this is not good stuff to do, I would go and do it."

The devil rides the hunger to prove himself…. "Whatever I do and sell, I do it with pride, with a lot of hard work, so don't envy my stardom. If you can do it, go ahead, spend five days with me and at the cost of what I give, try it. I am very proud of what I do...."

What if everything were to be taken away from him now? For once, the answer doesn't roll off easily. Clutching his arms, he smiles and then, "I would be devastated. I don't know what I would do."

Khan and Able

Reportedly Salman Khan and Aamir Khan are planning to seal their newfound friendship by working together again. Aamir has suggested that Sallu's dad Salim write the script

Posted On Wednesday, June 27, 2007

Sandipan Dalal
Aamir Khan and Salman Khan

Despite all the pot-shots that Salman Khan has taken at the reclusive Aamir Khan over the years, the two continue to be friends. On Sunday evening, Aamir attended the impromptu dinner party thrown by Salman at Galaxy Apartments. Aamir spent most of his time with Sallu and his dad Salim Khan, at the party. The conversation veered from homemade biryani to award functions to big, fat film deals. Our source, who was present at the party, tells us that at one point Salim Khan suggested that Sallu should team up with Aamir for a film. At this, Aamir Khan requested the veteran scriptwriter to write the script for their film together.

Speculations are rife that the actors might really team up after a successful stint with Rajkumar Santoshi's Andaaz Apna Apna (1994). Says our source, "We didn't expect Aamir to be there. He was the special guest for the evening. He exchanged greetings with everyone and then settled down for a chat with Salimsaab."

Industry insiders say that the Khans are gradually getting together to form their own camp. However, Aamir is yet to join the block. It's a lesser-known fact that the actor begged out of the lavish title track of Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om saying that he had to edit his home production Tarein Zameen Par. Adds our source, "Shah Rukh, Salman and Saif are definitely fond of each other. That's why they jumped at the prospect of a song. Aamir is very slowly and steadily coming out of his shell and carefully testing the waters now."

Nevertheless, Salim Khan has revealed recently that he intends to 'get back to work'. Adds a close friend, "Salimsaab is very well read. He has tremendous vision about films. He is definitely writing something. The three Khans - Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman are any filmmaker's delight. Shah Rukh and Salman have already decided to work with each other. They just need to sit down and plan the details."

The Hottest Films of 2007 coming up!

The first six months of 2007!

It's been a mixed bag of goodies so far. Like a lucky draw. Some got their favourite candy from it, others got a phtooey bag! We've had releases like Bheja Fry, Cheeni Kum, Guru, Namaste London - all big hits so far. Then there've been Metro, Tara Rum Pum, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom; opening to mixed reviews but all average hits. And then the much hyped Salaam-E-Ishq which went down … Now the next six months … and another mixed bag coming up. Big films, big banners, different scripts and big stars … as for the directors - the men who make it rock - here's who to watch out for - the hottest directors coming up …

Farah Khan

Film to watch out for: Om Shanti Om
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone
Producer: Red Chilli Productions

USP: A Shah Rukh Khan home production is reason enough. And SRK's pairing with supermodel Deepika (who's touted as the next hottest gal in Bollywood) is quite an unusual but intriguing combo. A pleasant break from his favourite leading ladies - Rani, Preity and Kajol. The audiences' will heave with excitement too. Farah Khan known for her stilted take and bold sensibilities, has pulled off a never-done-before casting coup. A host of beauties from Shilpa Shetty, Rani, Kajol, Preity, Priyanka, Saif, Karisma, Salman, Juhi, Dharmendra, Bobby, Jeetendra, Sunju, Rishi Kapoor, Subhash Ghai, Karan Johar and more….have done cameos in the film.

Expectation: The SRK - Farah Khan deadly combo created a commercial pot-boiler with Main Hoon Na. This one is apparently another tribute to the golden era of Bollywood, much like her debut film. Nothing short of sky-high expectations from this one.

Shimit Amin

Film to watch out for: Chak De India
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan and Vidya Malvade and a hockey team of women!
Producer: Aditya Chopra (Yash Raj Films)

U.S.P: SRK playing an ex-hockey player who returns to the field as a coach to the women's hockey team - interesting plot. Reviving a national sport that is overshadowed by another passion, cricket. But with cricketers stock taking a beating, hockey with SRK may just be the new sporty flavour of the season.

Expectation: High expectations only because it's an SRK and Aditya Chopra venture. Shimit Amin's previous film Ab Tak Chappan didn't leave a dramatic impact on the B.O, so we wouldn't bet all our money on Vidya's team - not yet really, but safe to hedge here.
