SRK recalling Asoka days?

By IndiaFM News Bureau, June 21, 2007 - 10:25 IST

Here a picture of Shah Rukh Khan brandishing a sword outside the Warwick castle in Britain to officially open its latest attraction 'Dream of Battle'.

Dressed in jeans and a white T-shirt, check him out as he poses with some weirdly dressed up knights. Shah Rukh may feel a bit nostalgic as he had undergone training in sword fighting for his production Asoka.

'Badshah' Shah Rukh visits castle

By MovieTalkies.com, 23 June 2007

That Shah Rukh Khan is the undisputed 'Badshah' of Bollywood is a known and accepted fact. And that his popularity is not just restricted to India but even beyond this country's shores is also undisputed. The last was proved once more when the actor was invited to inaugurate a new million dollar attraction in Warwick Castle recently.

Shah Rukh, who is currently holidaying abroad with his family, flew down to the popular Warwick Castle with wife and kids and was given a royal treatment. He was received and escorted by armoured knights to a medieval style ribbon-cutting ceremony inside the castle. The attraction that he inaugurating is called the 'Dream of Battle.' This Khan seems to have given the phoren celebrities a beating as well, popularity-wise that is. It was not the Beckhams or the Robbie Williams or the royalty that would do for the organizers but our own 'Badshah.' After the opening, the actor was given a private tour of the castle and the latest attraction, along with his family. Royal treatment that!

Shah Rukh Khan may work again with Abbas-Mastan

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan may again work with Abbas-Mastan – the director duo who placed him on the pedestal of superstardom.

In 1993, director brothers Abbas-Mastan made 'Baazigar' with SRK, who was yet to establish his stronghold in Bollywood.

The film went on to become a hit and its villain became Indian cinema's hero, who stuttered, romanced and drank his way to 70 mm fame and even ended up as a wax figure at Madame Tussauds.

In 1999, Abbas-Mastan again directed SRK in Baadshah , but the film didn't do well at the box-office.

And now, the duo is again contemplating a stylised thriller with SRK.

"We are in talks with Shah Rukh for a thriller. The subject has to inspire both him and us, but he is very keen to work with us again," says Abbas.

"It will be a modern film and will look sleek with special effects. However, it has not been decided on whether Shah Rukh will also produce the film," adds Mastan.

Abbas-Mastan's forthcoming Naqaab , promises not to be far behind from today's stylish, super-sleek and fast-paced thrillers.

The film, starring Akshaye Khanna , Bobby Deol and newcomer Urvashi Sharma , which releases next month has a love triangle at its centre, like most Abbas-Mastan thrillers.

"We would have opted for Amisha Patel in Naqaab but then it would have looked like Humraaz sequel" - Mustan

By Reshma Kelkar, June 21, 2007 - 10:33 IST

Abbas-Mustan are miffed with rumours that their latest thriller Naqaab is similar to their 2002 release Humraaz. Mustan defends, "Naqaab is a romantic thriller and does not have any similarity with Humraaz as is being speculated. It has it's on own mystery which we have tried to solve through three prominent characters. Bobby Deol and Akshaye Khanna are in prominent roles and since WE are directing this movie people have this feeling that Humraaz and Naqaab are same. But once these three characters will be revealed onscreen, you will know what is happening, why is it happening and for what is it happening? Naqaab has shaped up totally different from Humraaz."

The director-duo has already started working on their next film Race which happens to be their most star-studded film so far featuring Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif, Sameera Reddy and Anil Kapoor in lead roles. The other brother from the director duo reveals, "Race was supposed to start in January but before that Ramesh Taurani offered us Naqaab. Akshay had already committed for this project and since it was a romantic thriller Mr. Taurani wanted us to work on it. We liked the subject and decided to work on it. We had already worked with Bobby Deol and Akshaye Khanna during Humraaz and we get along well. Besides, they could manage the dates easily. We would have opted for Amisha in Naqaab but then it would have looked like Humraaz sequel. We wanted someone who didn't have any particular image as such and whom people won't anticipate in that role. I remember during Gupt, Kajol didn't have any negative image but she did pull off that character so well."

During Gupt Kajol didn't have any negative image but she did pull off that character so well.

Speaking about their favorite actors Akshaye Khanna and Bobby Deol, Mustan says, "Our last film with Bobby was Humraaz, before that we worked in Soldier and Ajnabee and both the films were hits. I think Bobby has turned out to be good performer." Mustan has all praise for Akshaye Khanna. He states "Akshaye is very good actor. He is playing an important role in our forthcoming film Race. This will be his fourth film with us. We have worked together and shared a good rapport with him therefore we know which role will suit him. He gives his best to every character that he plays. He is all rounder and we know he is very talented to pull off any kind of role." Urvashi came into the picture when we were looking for a new girl and Mr. Taurani told us that he knew this girl. We met Urvashi and after talking to her we realized that she has the potential. She is a good artist."

Abbas-Mustan's last release 36 China Town failed on Box Office. So what went wrong with that film? "Many people blamed the climax of the film saying they didn't like the humorous end. But we had come up with ten endings for 36 China Town before we came up with a humorous ending like this. Though audiences were disappointed by the humorous climax of 36 China Town, Naqaab will not disappoint them for sure" he quips.

We had come up with ten endings for 36 China Town before we came up with a humorous ending like this.

Being admirer of Vijay Anand, Mustan says, "We have seen suspense drama many times and we know that once the suspense is revealed, people lose interest. But there are some films which have combination of suspense and thriller. We have seen Goldie Sir's (Vijay Anand) Teesri Manzil. We admire him a lot. Though we know the suspense of that film, we have seen it around 10 times. We analyze that there are some other factors as well which we didn't realize for the first time and explored it second or third time. We always keep in mind that after the release of a film the suspense element is going to be revealed, so overall there should be something that will entertain people and compel them to watch it again and again."

After the release of a film the suspense element is going to be revealed, so overall there should be something that will entertain people and compel them to watch it again and again.

So, now when the remakes are current trend in Bollywood, would you like to follow the bandwagon? "I don think we can remake any suspense film. But yes we can make sequels too. We are thinking on same lines. Among our hit films we are planning to make Khiladi 2 with Akshay Kumar, Baazigar 2 and Badshah 2. We are yet to think about the storyline but we will surely be planning sequels of these films. We are also planning to announce our own production house soon after we finish these films. We may even produce these sequels. But everything is in the planning stage now."

London diaries

Karan is back from his holiday in London. Here are a few anecdotes from his eventful trip

Posted On Monday, June 25, 2007
Sandipan Dalal

Karan and mommy Hiroo Johar are just back from their annual holiday in London. Apart from watching musicals, shopping, eating out and taking long walks at Oxford Street, it's more of a family affair, as best friend Shah Rukh Khan always spends the summers in the same city. However, the city also brings in not-too-fond memories as Karan was mugged at the crowded Piccadilly Circus on one of his previous trips.

After having exchanged a few cheques when he was strolling on a pavement an errant passer-by pushed him against a wall and demanded cash and valuables. He says, "I was definitely being watched while walking along a pavement. I pleaded with the mugger for my passport. After taking everything, he pushed me so hard that I fell flat on the road. I felt so violated and exploited after I was left without a single pound in my pocket."

This time it was more fun as he spent quality time with SRK. However, he was not really successful in pushing Shah Rukh out of his house for dinner. He says, "We spent a lot of time as one big family. Mum was also around. But getting Shah Rukh out of his is a big task. He is a complete house-body and takes no interest in dining outside."

It's a lesser-known fact that Karan has been maintaining a daily diary since 1993. Usually, he jots down the events and the people he meets everyday.

He says, "I do hide these dairies as they have a lot of personal notes. But I strongly recommend the habit of maintaining a diary."

Along with the four films that he is producing, his run as the host of the show, Koffee With Karan, is far from over. Presently, he is in talks with Salman Khan and his family. If all goes well, Salim Khan and his three sons will make an appearance on the show.

"Salman is a friend and I'll beg and plead to get him on the show," he concludes on a hopeful note.

For King Khan, Russian fan mail from Azerbaijan

Back from playing in Baku's local hockey league, Manju and Nishi plan to deliver letters to Mannat

Shailendra Awasthi

Mumbai, June 24: Jet lag rarely hits Indian Railways employees. But after spending a month in Azerbaijan's capital Baku, playing the European Club Championship there, Central Railway's junior ticket collector Manju Phalswal and Leave Department clerk Nishi Chauhan feel slightly dizzy at work, a day after they returned home.

But this doesn't stop them from regaling inquisitive colleagues with Baku tales. Most of the excited chatter is typical of the foreign-returned. The anecdotes are about alien food, language and culture, but the hockey flavour makes these postcards from Baku interesting. And one name crops up all too often—Shah Rukh Khan.

Nishi can barely hide her excitement as she explains: "We are carrying fan mail written in Russian for Shah Rukh which our teammates in Baku have asked us to deliver to him. They are crazy about him and Mithun Chakraborty."

As the two girls, who work at Dadar station, contemplate their journey to Mannat, they narrate how it began. It all started when Indian Women's Hockey Federation asked the two 24-year-olds to not just play for the Azerbaijan club but also help the local players improve their skills. "We played for Atta Club, where most players were women between 35 and 40 years. We finished fourth in the event," says Manju.

Nishi adds that former Pakistan hockey great Tahir Zaman, who is the national coach of Azerbaijan, was their friend and guide during the short stint. "He is a great human being. He puts a lot of emphasis on speed and stamina, apart from skills. We learnt a lot from him," says Manju.

When the girls—tired of bland European salads and chicken dishes—craved for Indian food, "Tahir Sir made arrangements so that we could cook in our rooms. He even taught us a few Russian words," says Nishi.

And they just had to switch on the TV whenever they felt homesick. "There were Bollywood movies dubbed in Russian," says Nishi, adding with a smile "thank god, they didn't dub the songs."

While the girls speak warmly about the hospitality, they also speak about a young man who stalked them. "He used to follow us at times and play some Russian songs on his cell phone. We asked our team mates what he wanted but they said that it wasn't worth translating," says Manju.

Didn't Shah Rukh play a stalker in one of his most popular movies? Bang comes the repartee: "Yes he did. Didn't we tell you that he was quite popular in Azerbaijan?
