Shah Rukh's now muscle-bound and fitter

11 Jun, 2007 08:27 am ISTlINDIATIMES MOVIES

Okay, so Shah Rukh Khan always wore body hugging T-shirts with jeans. It has been his favourite, comfort dressing zone. But of late, the Tees have grown on him like a glove. Reason? The Khan is fitter and more muscular than ever. Apparently he's been watching his diet, minding the calories and working out regularly. And its resulted in a super, V-shaped physique with muscular arms et al. It's also making the workaholic superstar look a lot fresher and has given him energy to work 18-hour days at a stretch. We recently bumped into the superactive star at an ad shoot and mistook him for a hunky model with silky hair and the works. It was his inimitable voice and wit that convinced us that the muscled man was SRK. And when he laughed and told us, 'yes, I try to work out when I can. It gives me some energy to work harder', we knew it was him. But like we say, more power to this Khan - right?

Following the 'pagdi' system

We all know of the alleged land problems the Bachchan family has got itself into. But that's not quite our referral here. Figuratively speaking, even the Shah Rukhs and Ajay Devgans of filmdom have followed the 'pagdi' system at some point in their careers - when they play village folk, for example.

Then of course is the ever-amusing Shah Rukh Khan, who is always willing to try something new, even it means trying on something absurd. In Amol Palekar's 'Paheli', SRK's get-up created quite a stir. The pagdi seemed to be a huge pile of never ending cloth, but the man carried the burden with much ease and panache.

Why everyone still hates Ash-Abhi?

The fallout from the 'Wedding of the Year' seems to still be reverberating around Bollywood.

According to an Indian portal, it has now affected director Karan Johar. The 35-year-old director and talk show host is caught between the rest of Bollywood and Amitabh Bachchan.

It has been nearly two months since his son Abhishek married Aishwarya Rai in a grand wedding, but Amitabh's decision to leave out a large number of Bollywood's denizens from the nuptial guest list is still stinging for some.

When Karan announced that he is casting Aishwarya and Abhishek in his new project - the duo is now considered to be a box-office goldmine - his good friend and frequent collaborator, Shah Rukh Khan said he wouldn't participate in the film.

The 42-year-old actor has worked on most of Karan's films under the latter's company, Dharma Productions.

That decision could also be attributed to the simmering rivalry between Shah Rukh and the 64-year-old Amitabh. There are also actors who don't want to work the newly weds for fear of being overshadowed by them.

Meanwhile, a national newspaper reported that Saif Ali Khan, who had apparently agreed to work with Aishwarya and Abhishek in the venture, has pulled out.

While his busy schedule was the official reason, the Indian media speculated that the 36-year-old actor might have been afraid of having his star diminished by the couple.

The newspaper cited an unnamed source who said, "The dates could have been adjusted. But (Saif) decided to let go."

Shah Rukh Khan-M F Husain painting sold for 160,000 pounds

10th June 2007 14.00 IST
By Agencies

A painting jointly created by one of the greatest contemporary artists M F Husain and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was sold for 160,000 pounds at an auction held at Bonhams showroom.

The work which depicted a scene from 'Mugal-e-Azam' was almost entirely done by Husain, named by Forbes magazine as the "Picasso of India" with the King Khan giving some "nervous strokes" at the finish.

"Whatever we do can be turned into a masterpiece, because he is the master," said SRK about the 92-year-old artist adding that it was an honour to be able to share canvas with the veteran artist known for walking bare feet and for carrying a paintbrush wherever he goes.

The painting featured a man in sand-coloured clothing fanning the face of his lover, Anarkali, who is reclining near a musician playing a sitar.

Only the sitar was to be completed by Husain and SRK in front of the live audience on Saturday. As the actor carefully filled in the bottom portion of the sitar nervously, Husain took the paintbrush away to the amusement of audience.

Asked about SRK's contribution to his painting, Husain said: "Being an artist, whether you are a painter or an actor, we are bound to add some colour, something to whatever we do. The painting is almost done, I am lucky that Shah Rukh is with me for the final touches."

"I am not an artist by a long shot, but I'm here to just enjoy the evening as I hope many of you will too," SRK, who was accompanied by wife Gauri, a well known art collector, and children Aryan and Suhana, said.

Husain said women in his paintings are his way of depicting his mother who died when he was a toddler. "I seek my mother in the women I depict in my paintings," he said. Husain and SRK wrote their signatures in the upper right corner of the piece. The "Art for Freedom" event was held to raise support for art and media.

The display was part of the auction of 35 works done by top artists like S H Raza, Akbar Padamsee, Jogen Chowdhury, Jatin Das, Aparna Caur and Yusuf Arakkal.

Much of the works were a collaborative effort between top artists and high-profile Indian and UK celebrities.

While London-based artist Angeli Sonwani worked along Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin, NRI industrialist Sir Ghulam Noon teamed up with Paresh Maity, Shamshad Husain with Surina Narula, Farhan Mujeeb with actor Naseeruddin Shah among others.

Anjana Kuthiala, the artist who has painted many portraits of SRK, said collaborative art pieces have become a big trend today. Her own painting called 'SRK and the flowering tree' has contributions from celebrities like playback singer Sonu Nigam and SRK's mother-in-law Savita Chibber.

The auction market for Indian art alone, according to Bonhams, has almost tripled from 26 million pounds in 2006 to its current rate of 75 million pounds.

Now Khiladi 2' & 'Baazigar 2'

By Taran Adarsh, June 12, 2007 - 09:15 IST

Sequels and remakes are in! And the latest to join the bandwagon are Abbas-Mustan. The director duo is all set to make sequels to their immensely popular and successful films – KHILADI, BAAZIGAR and BAADSHAH. "Yes, the idea was mooted by Ratan Jain of Venus, since the three films are Venus productions," both Abbas and Mustan confirm the development.

So when are they planning to start the films? "It all depends on when we get the right script. When we sounded off the idea to Akshay, he jumped with joy since KHILADI was the turning point in his career. The films will have to be made with the original actors [Akshay, SRK], otherwise it makes no sense to go ahead with them," they state.

Besides these films, the badshaahs of thrillers are all set to start films for Ratan Jain [of Venus] and Subhash Ghai's Mukta Arts.
