Actually it's NOT a "common expression" - it is derogatory and sexist. I've only heard the illiterate, the uneducated and the outright sexist men using that term to refer to women - and of course Pritam and Ali.

Ironically, the only herd mentality I see is on these forums.

Everyone likes Gautam, I should like him too. Classic case of andha follow andha.

I think it's got more to do with how much noise one makes - last year it was Gauhar fans, season 4 it was ST fans, season 6 it was Urvashi and Delu fans - this year it is the Gautam fans.

More than herd mentality - the forum is kind of a reflection of who the popular contestants are - the posts/threads in favor of the less popular contestants get lost in the melee of threads either praising the season hero, or bashing his/her opponents.

Like this one is going to get relegated to 6-7 page by the same time tomorrow. Now if it was about bashing Tanna or praising Gautam it would be alive for 2-3 days at least.

I have noticed Puneet is very sexiest. He probably treats women outside with no respect, but don't look into it too much because he is a person with mentality of the 70s and that time women were treated poorly and people like him don't change easily. For eg. Armaan Kohli.
The others were just playing around I guess, he was the only one who sounded cheap.

TM,

I agree with your post, somewhat. Big Boss has a lot of "women" issues this season and the players too are propogating sexist views a lot of the time. It's not just about women though, I mean sexist, even when it concerns men. For example, in the earlier tasks, when everyone loved everyone and pretended to get along like a real family, the women would say stuff like " khaana banana auraton ka kaam hai, ye mard kyun kitchen mein ghusna chahte hain". This was by Karishma and Minissha and Diandra and Soni, at one point or another, when Puneet and Praneet wanted to cook, and do stuff in the kitchen. This is also gender stereotyping, so I don't see it only as a women issue. The girls, are equally very ok, with this gender stereotyping nonsense. Again, earlier episodes, when it came to being sevak, or sleeping on the floor, they have time and again, made comments on men being the ones to do it, because it's a man's prerogative to not let the women suffer hardship. They purposely nominated men to be sevaks, and I remember clearly, that Puneet said how women cannot sleep on the floor and it should be men to do so. Minissha was so shocked when she was chosen for sevak, and she aptly stereotyped when she said " main ladki hoke neeche soo-ungi". None of the girls are given toilet cleaning tasks, because it was said when choosing duties, how women should NOT have to clean the toilets, as it's a dirty task and men should do it. All the women complied to that view point.

So, this is a general attitude in ALL the housemembers who behave like men and women have different sets of rules in life. Pritam has very often said "women" oriented nonsense, so has Puneet. Salman himself has made fun of Sushant in a derogatory manner in the first week ka WKW, imitating his feminine behavior, simply because he is gay, and a man should act like a man? Calling out on his shorts and telling him to sit properly.

So I won't single out today's oath taking ceremony, but I would generalize that all of them, no matter how educated, how famous, how worldly -wise and intelligent they are, simply adhere to gender roles that are so defined in our country and the rest of the world. I don't blame them, because in our daily lives, on many levels, we do the same. Act like a man, act like a lady, don't cry like a women, don't be so manly.

And then of course Parineeti, where she really made a joke of the whole molestation issue with Ali. I wonder, why they didn't play a prank on Sonali, where Ranveer alleged that she molested him. If it was to be a prank, why not other way round? It wasn't to teach Ali a lesson or anything, it was a prank, so why not on a lady, instead of a man?

@pp29 - yes this season is remarkable in that, that the gender issue has been raised so many times - and every time the housemates, the creatives, the production house and even the channel have gone horribly wrong in not just defining but also addressing and handling the issues. Nobody could have failed so brilliantly even if they had planned on failing.

And that reminds me - I sooo wanted to create a post yesterday about the so called "PRANK" - but it was too late at the time to get into that discussion, and even now it is kinda late to create that thread.

Honestly, I don't think they meant to say that those are qualities of men and not women. They were just generally saying it. And to be quite frank, have you seen the girls of this house? They do all those things - follow herd mentality, start fights, etc. And I'm not singling out the girls and saying that they're the only ones who do this. I think that the guys would have listed those same qualities even if it were a girl that was entering their group.

The only funny part of the entire ceremony was Sushant giving "outside support" to Ali. I think I cracked up there.

And also, while we are on this women issue, the girls this season have been MISUSING the term FEMINISM. First it was Karishma, "isne national television pe ladki ko gaali di." Then Minissha with her whole, "Main aurat ho ke bhi zameen par soungi." The only time it made sense was when Ali touched Sonali. Feminism can be applied there, he should not have touched her without her consent.

It makes me so angry when women throw around the term feminism for the dumbest things. Feminism is promoting EQUAL RIGHTS FOR MEN AND WOMEN. It DOES NOT mean Man-bashing.
