He was genuinely hurt given how badly Surbhi threw a lot of bad mud on his character to the point of being frustrated as Surbhi was not taken to task.. so it was a simple feeling of reflection when Sree went through the same thing. When he came out of the bathroom, it was genuine tears and he's been with Sree for hours on end in the bathroom so he felt bad. It should be mentioned that he does feel bad for even his enemies.

Soon later, when he was on his bed, he probably though along the way he would milked the tears a bit so that he can gain a few brownie points accompanied with the fact that he gets some needed extra footage for the episode.

He didn't exactly fail at all. It's certainly a strong intelligent move, win-win for him as he's gained new supporters along the way. I'm liking how he's playing the game as of now.

Protip- You shouldn't speak on behalf of the audience as you'll get a lot of disagreements that way.
