Hi Kaana...first of all thanks for inviting me for this discussion...your post indeed made me think...
the word great or greatness can be manifested in many ways and for me its more of an accomplishment or rather a perception of it...these men that you've mentioned were deemed great because they achieved things which were unheard of in their respective eras...they had the courage and audacity to think big and act upon it...but does that make them great in the eyes of everyone...and now that is a moot point and in my opinion that's where the perception sets in...a thing can be considered great for many but even then for the rest it can evoke a completely different emotion, which does not get anywhere close to greatness...perception indeed is a strong force...and I sincerely believe that history has been written mostly by the victors...hence the anomalies...
I for one consider Akbar to be a great man, not for his military accomplishments ( well he had the best possible resources at his disposal ), but because he had the gumption to think out of box...he was a brilliant strategist and many moons ago he realised that in order to succeed and rule peacefully he must ensure an environment of religious harmony, which is so relevant in today's times as well...he had the courage to take on the religious custodians/ ulemas of his time...and this requires courage and steadfastness...he not only confronted them but went ahead to form a religion of his own where everyone will have equal rights...he was a visionary in true sense...but having said that there is no denying that he was a cruel man and chittor massacre was a dark stain, a blot which cannot be washed away, how so ever he hard he tried...
MP might not have the epithet great, but does that make him less of it...?...when every other person laid down their arms in front of the might of Akbar he did not and waged a lone battle for his motherland...and he sacrificed so much for it...but the great part is even in his dire struggles he never let go of his values and his steadfastness and the extra ordinary courage to go against the tide for the love of his motherland makes him great to me...if for once his fellow rajputs instead of bickering amongst themselves and supported him in his endeavours then history would have had a different course...but alas it was never meant to be...
MP was the only person who earned the title "Maharana"...rest of the sisodias in common parlance is known as rana and we all know the house of mewar has had many valiant sons...be it Rana Sanga, Kumbha or Hamir singh, each with a glorious past but they are remembered with the title "Rana"...its only Pratap who's never called "Rana Pratap"...its always "Maharana Pratap"...and for me MP is a true warrior and a benevolent king who did everything for his mother land and his subjects and I consider him to be the greatest of the great...

Any skilled people he left alone. Common laborers were put to work. If anyone refused to surrender, he did get them killed. But he only started the war in the first place if was pushed into it.

So, finally I can not say if he was great or not.

One thing I can say though, Maharana Pratap was truly great. He was such a noble character.
The code of honor followed by many Indian rulers rarely exists anywhere else in the world.

Genghis Khan was great in his own way, but he had his drawbacks also as I see. He had a great taste for arts and he practised a system based on merit, which was unique in those times. He recognised bravery in enemies. And above all he was able to build Mongolia from nowhere. His people had great regards for him.

And yes, Maharana has many qualifiers to be called great.

Thanks for going back and sincerely checking in this to share with us all. Looking forward more interesting posts from you, pl keep continuing :-)

Ok..Thankfully, I was finally able to make time to post my commentary on this amazing post of urs... U have a very brilliant question here, Kaana... :)

++++++++

GREAT - U have aptly described / defined the meaning of this word.. and I fully agree to it... But at the end it is like...to each, his own... And the degree of GREATNESS varies from field to field... From kings to warriors, from academics excellence to social activities...etc...

When they say ''Akbar the GREAT'', all I can say is - blame it on the history tbks and our school syllabus which has glorified the Mughal era to such an extent and its no wonder that students believe it to be true.
I know I m being highly selective and blunt, but I do not find him to be "THE GREAT''... Yes, I agree that he was a shrewd politician, able administrator, and I admire him for that..but thats about it ! And I do keep reading abt Mughals, but then I was only able to form these views after reading and reading abt them. 😆

I have studied in the state board and my syllabus covered mainly the Marathas and their struggle, esp the life and times of Shivaji Maharaj, whom I find to be the GREAT, and hence by default it also covered the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb...We hardly had something about the Rajput history, and I might have red abt MP in a line or so...but never did I learn abt the siege, or Haldighati before this show. And its a very sad thing that such battles and bloodsheds which took place in different parts of our country were never covered in the tbks.

Men like Maharana Pratap, Shivaji Maharaj, Chankya, and Prithviraj Chauhan, whom we shouldn't forget was the last Rajput n Hindu king to rule Delhi and that he too fought against the invaders... These men, I find them to be the GREAT ! Ashoka is also someone I admire and respect, coz, here too, one cannot ignore the fact that he had the guts to accept the sins he committed, which normally kings don't accept easily, in those days... and he tried his very best to atone to the sins. I, in that sense, find him to be GREAT too !

Women like Rani Lakshmi Bai, Savitri Bai Phule, I find them to be GREAT !

Alexander - this man too was obviously a great military strategist and I for some reason, have started comparing him to MP and Shivaji Maharaj...lol.. I once red a story about Alexander and the Peru King Puru..(I think thats the name..though u can verify it..) This Peru king though had a very small army and in no time was defeated by Alexander, he had a huge self esteem and dignity and so he refused to bow down to Alexander, instead he gladly welcomed the death punishment. Alexander was in awe of this man... and did not want to punish him... Well, I dont know what happened in the end, but I actually found Alexander to be not so cruel man... though I cannot say about his GREATNESS !

++++++++++

Btw, on a side note, even today there are people whom we can call GREAT - the war martyrs of our nation..before and after independence. And also those who are still living and protecting us, in the borders. Ok, enough of my silly rantings.. Thank u for making this amazing post. :)

Even I did not study much about Maharana, all only internet gyan. And more reliable history now from my good friend Abhay.These national heroes are such an inspiration and it is a shame if their life and achievements are not covered in detail, irrespective of the state one belongs to.
Likewise there are many heroes of south and east also, who are unheard of in the northern states am sure. Atleast these shows bring to light some of these Rajputs and Marathas and we get exposure to the national pride, but what about heroes from other regions - why can't contiloe and folks make shsows on these other kings also. This way the nation's entire history in all its glory will be spread across the nation.
On second thoughts, i am fine they do not also, as there would be assasination of more great ones in the name NR.

True, one eed great guts to admit one's sin, that too in public, that to when its coming from such a king of such a huge empire.
Women like Rani Lakshmi Bai, Savitri Bai Phule, I find them to be GREAT !
Can I make a request please? Can you pl post on Savitri Bai Phule, only if not a hasse and if you will have time? Would like to know more about her.

Yes, this was w.r.t. King Porus, the neighbouring country to Taxila, which had the traitor king Ambhi, who gave a free entry to Alexander int India. Though neighbours one cannot miss the stark contrast in their attitude. And yes, only a great person can recognise the greatness in another. Alexander had his good qualities definitely and was great in his own way. But to me, based on my parameters, he may not fit the bill.

Absolutely, I had wanted to add this note in my post, but you have said it and so I will leave it. Very well said Anu. There are heroes of today also. I remember a NDTV coverage post Kargil, where the last letter from the commander of an unit was read out by his mother. What he did was nothing but SAKA. One can only remember these rajputs on hearing his words. Will see if i can trace and post the link for you all here.
Thanks again for this wonderful post Anu. Loved it.
