Chapter 33
The next dawned early for the couple who were whisked away for all the ceremonies that were to take place that day. Bijolia was super busy with each and every citizen doing their bit to assist in the upcoming nuptials from flower sellers to pot makers people of all ages came together in the joyous occasion whereas in Chittor nothing was going well for the devious mother-son duo
DB was exhausted from all the packing US had made her do of the gifts for Ajabde but this time she could not blame the commoner girl as it was her own ego that came in the way
FLASHBACK
US (to a servant): Make sure all gifts are wrapped properly and nicely kept in a well decorated basket as they will be going to Bijolia and the baskets have to be decorated with bright coloured...what do you call them?
Servant: What Hukum?
DB sees her husband and walks up to him
DB: Ranaji may I help you with something?
US: Yes Dheer Baiji I was just asking the name of the things those bright coloured ones that are used to decorate baskets
DB: What things? And what baskets Ranaji
US: Dheer Baiji the baskets that will carry all the gifts for Ajabde
DB hides her irritation but US notices it
US: You know when Jaiwanta Baiji was here she would wrap all the gifts by her own hands and even decorate the baskets as well. She would say that Hansa Baiji and Rao Mamrakh are our family and we should prepare things ourselves for family but ...
DB swallows her anger as her ego kicks in (in thoughts): Jija has ruined their brains by thinking of them as family but what does she think that DheerBai Bhatiyani cannot wrap some gifts and decorate baskets?
DB: Don't worry Ranaji I will do everything as it has been done till now
US: But Dheer Baiji are you sure?
DB: Yes Ranaji I can manage gift wrapping and basket decorating
US: Alright then all the gifts have to be sent off early tomorrow morning so make sure everything is ready by then
He leaves leaving behind a dumbstruck DB -Early morning tomorrow?
And now here she was with her hair tied in a bun sitting on the floor surrounded by gifts and baskets that were covered haphazardly with blotches of colour thrown all over
DB: I swear I'm never doing this manual work ever again
Servant: Ranisa may we help with something
DB: No leave me alone
Servant: ji
Standing on the corner US was thoroughly enjoying the pain DheerBai was going through when he is joined by Rawatji
Rawatji: Is that?
US: Yes Rawatji Dheer Baiji is wrapping gifts and decorating baskets meant for Ajabde
Rawatji: How?
US: I might have said that Jaiwanta Baiji used to do that when she was here
Rawatji: But MahaRanisa only did the ones for Ajabde and not all of them
US: Must have slipped my mind. Do tell me how is Jagmal faring?
Rawatji: He is at the moment training with the archers
US: he is learning archery?
Rawatji: No
US: so target practice?
Rawatji: Yes but with a twist
US: Twist?
Rawatji: Jagmal is the target and every archer is aiming at him
Both the men laugh and leave to make preparations for the trip the latter had to take to Bijolia
Chapter 34
Ajabde sat in her room with her hand and feet decorated in henna while everyone bustled around her. She sat silently taking in everything around her - memories came rushing from when she was a mere toddler to her performing her puja with her brothers, playing with them, her parents kissing her goodnight, her mother telling all of them stories, holding her tight in her embrace when she was sick or hurt. She didn't even realise when tears had welled up in her eyes so when her mother came in calling her name and saw the tears she gave sometime to her daughter who was just realising the fact that she would be leaving them in a day's time
HB: Ajabde I was looking for the gifts we selected for Jaiwanta Baiji and Sajja Baiji. Do you know where they are?
Ajabde hides her tears and clears her voice: Maa the gifts yes they were kept in the temple
HB: Are you alright Ajab?
Ajabde: Yes Maa just something fell in my eye- nothing serious you go
HB goes to her daughter and slowly kisses her forehead and then leaves while Subho enters the room
Subho: Haaye so much love I'm surely going to get sick in this sweet weather I tell you Ajabde
Ajabde tries to hide her tears but Subho notices them and wipes them off: You are only marrying him Ajabde - just marriage - you are not going on the battlefield
Ajabde glares at her friend who smiles looking at her which makes her smile as well
Ajabde: Everything will be so different Subho
Subho: Only the place will change Ajab. Everyone is going to be there - it's going to be you, Kunwar Pratap, his brothers who adore you and his mothers who dote on you.
Ajabde: I know but I feel like something is being left behind
Subho: Ajabde I know you are going to miss me loads but let's be realistic you and I - we cannot elope what will the people think of us?
Ajabde ends up laughing at her friend's silliness and both of them just sit and chat for sometime
Pratap was with Rao Mamrakh who had received news of Rawatji's trip - he was expected in Bijolia the next day before the sword gifting ceremony. Security had been beefed up for the wedding as there was not only threat from foreign invaders but internal as well - Jagmal was a psychopath and nobody wanted to take any chances
Pratap and his brothers along with his friends had been invited for the feast by Rao Mamrakh ji when a servant came running in
Servant: Hukum an injured man has come seeking you
RM: Injured man?
Servant: Yes Hukum says it is important he speaks with you
Everyone look at each other
Pratap: Who did he say he was?
Servant: Said he was from Chittor
They all rush to meet the man who was getting treated by Vaidji
Man: have...to...speak
Vaidji: Keep still and save your energy brother
Man: No...need to ...save...
RM enters with everyone
Pratap recognises the man and so does everyone as well
Pratap: Kakasa tell me who did this you? I will personally kill him
Man: My Pratap - my boy...
Pratap: Kakasa!!
Man: Save Ajabde...Jagmal ran...hurt Rawatji
Pratap held the man's hand tightly in his while the others looked in horror trying to comprehend the words that had been just said out loud. Suddenly the women came in
JB: We just heard...
Their eyes fall on the man lying in front of them
JB: No...he cannot
Pratap: He's dead
SB and HB console JB who looked at Rawatji's younger brother who was family- who had always considered her as an elder sister while loved the boys unconditionally
Pratap keeps his hand respectfully and then stood up: Let's go. It's time to end Jagmal
And with that Pratap walked out without a glance at anyone followed by his brother and friends
