CHAPTER 15
The huge suite of rooms suffered from a tense atmosphere.
The three men sat in abject silence each busy in their own thoughts. The clock of time ticked away.
An hour passed.
Suddenly as if someone had flipped open a switch, the youngest man out of the three slammed the wine glass on the table drawing the attention of the other two.
"I've had enough" he roared out, "how long are we going to seat here thinking and doing nothing where there that snake of a woman is planning to destroy m daughter's future."
"Raisingh" the other man rebuked, "be polite. She is our mother's sister."
Kunwar Raisingh Rathore gave a mocking snort.
"Half-sister, Dada Bhai. Years younger than Badimaa. After all the alliance is between her son and Badimaa's grand-daughter. Look at the contrast. And of course you are taking this lightly. It is my daughter who is going to suffer."
"Raisingh" the older brother thundered, "Phool may not be my daughter but I have never treated her otherwise. And you are suggesting that I..."
"Enough both of you."
The two brothers turned to face their father a bit startled.
Rao Maldev gave a withering glare to his two sons and gestured at them to sit.
"Raisingh didn't mean to accuse Chandrasen. He is simply under stress. And Chandrasen every offence doesn't require the sword. Now sit down and lets plot on how to diffuse this situation."
Baujiraj Chandrasen Rathore gave a small nod as he sat down next to his father. His younger brother followed him
A short pause followed before the Rathore King began.
"So now that you know the full situation I am sure you understand what are our options."
"Of course" Raisingh agreed, "we can't let Phool marry Jagmaal. No father would choose him for their daughter even if he were the last man on earth."
"Well that's all fine and all right, but question is how are we going to work this situation in our favour."
Rao Maldev gave a tiny smirk.
"Well you see when you both were re-living your kindergarten days, I was formulating a fool proof plan to save Phool."
Chandrasen and Raisingh exchanged startled looks, and leaned forward to hear it but at that very moment, the doorman came in.
"Hukum," he bowed.
Rao Maldev glared. "What?"
"Hukum, distressing news has come. PhoolKanwar Baisa..."
The effect was immediate. The three men rose hastily abandoning decorum as they stalked towards the doorman.
"What? What happened to her?"
"I am sorry Raoji. PhoolKanwar Baisa had an accident."
Raisingh paled. He wrenched forward holding the doorman by his shirt.
"Where is she?"
"K-Kunwarji s-she is in..."
"Where you stupid servant? Speak up,' Rao Maldev snarled.
The doorman gulped.
"Ajabde Songara Hospital, Kherwa."
Without a backward glance the three men rushed out.
So oblivious they were that they missed the pair of eyes following their actions.
Maharani Uma Devi Rathore stepped out of the shadows. Quickly she clicked on her mobile and dialled a familiar number.
The phone was answered in a few rings.
"Hello Jija."
"Dheer" Uma Devi said, "we have a problem."
Rao Shiladitya Raisen gave a swift knock to the ornate doors.
A soft voice came. "Come in."
With a furtive glance to make sure no one was following him he opened the doors and slipped in.
A familiar woman sat on the couch.
Immediately he felt the clogging scent surround him.
"Behna Dheer, what can your brother do for you today?"
Dheerbai Bhatiyani gave a wide smile.
"You know my plans." A statement.
It wasn't a question and both knew that.
"That you plan to get Jagmaal married to Rajkumari PhoolKanwar. Yes I do."
"Well then as we are in the same page let me explain. We have a problem."
"Problem?" Shiladitya quirked an eyebrow. "Since when did a problem stop you? What is it? Is it Jagmaal?"
Dheerbai gave him an unreadable look.
"Jagmaal wouldn't dare to tell me no, and you know this well enough not to question it. Actually Uma Jija called. Phool's grand-father, uncle and father are against this alliance."
"You mean Rao Maldev, Baujiraj Chandrasen and Kunwar Raisingh."
"Yes. And if those three retain their mind, we won't succeed."
Shiladitya gave an appraising glance.
"What do you want me to do. Raisingh Rathore would never agree."
"True' Dheerbai concurred, "but the other two?"
Shiladitya froze and suddenly an understanding smirk flit across his face giving it a sinister look.
Dheerbai smiled lazily.
"You take care of him, I'll take the other."
Shiladitya nodded.
"Consider it done."
The dim surroundings dulled her senses. Unable to think clearly she had moved forward and was now stuck.
Where was she, she knew not.
The surroundings flickered.
The green, white and yellow mashed together giving a mismatched look. Something different, away from reality.
She felt her head throb.
"Where am I?" she murmured. A sense of desperation spread in her. Leaving all hesitation she tried to move and then realized that she couldn't.
Tears of fear and helplessness dripped down her eyes. Her body felt tired lethargic.
It was then a sound reached her ears.
The soft chime of anklets was like a godsend. Hurriedly she shifted to see and froze.
A pair of familiar brown eyes stared at her with a spark in those eyes.
A sense of relief spurt into her and suddenly she could move again. She ran, ran with all she had towards the smiling figure and stumbling threw herself into her arms.
"Pari D-Di" she choked out.
Pari gave a smile and gently touched her face, the sapphire ring etching her cheek.
"It is time to go back Phool" she said.
A vehement denial rose in her.
"No" she spoke, "I won't go. I will stay with you. I have met you after nine years. I'll not leave you now. Never."
Pari smiled. "But it is not real Phool. You have to go back."
Phool shook her head. "What do you mean not real? It is real. Even if it is not it doesn't matter. I have you and that's enough. But where were you Pari Di? Nine years! Why did you leave me? You told me you'll always stay by me and ..."
"...and protect you from every problem," Pari finished. "I know I failed in it once but this time I won't. Look at the surroundings Phool. Do you know why they are so blurry?"
"Why?" Phool asked nonplussed.
"Because this all is an illusion and you're etching closer to consciousness."
"Consciousness?"
Pari gave the younger girl a pointed look.
"Don't you remember what happened Phool?"
Immediately the events fell back to their places. The chase, the fear, the thirst for survival, and finally the pain.
Her head throbbed and the surroundings lost their colour, flickering worse than before.
"Someone tried to kill me" she whispered.
Pari nodded her eyes hard.
"You have to go back Phool. A storm is coming and you have to be ready."
A sense of anxiety met her thoughts.
"What storm Pari Di? I don't understand. Please don't leave me" she begged. "Please Pari Di."
Pari laid a hand on her head.
"I'll never leave you now Phool. Go back to the world of living. I'll meet you there."
"How?"
Pari smiled. "Wish for it Phool."
"Huh?" Phool was confused.
"This is your mindscape Phool. Wish to live and you'll go from here."
Phool stood stupefied.
"Go Phool. I'll meet you soon."
Phool held out a shaky hand.
"Promise?"
Pari grasped Phool's hand in her own. The sapphire ring glinted.
"Promise. Now go."
Phool gave a trembling smile and closed her eyes.
I want to live. Please I want to live.
The next second she met a feeling of utter vertigo and she feel.
She couldn't speak, couldn't breathe.
Suffocated. Her body shivered.
And as suddenly as it began, it stopped.
Her eyes snapped open and white met her eyes.
All what had happened came back to her and a sob broke through her.
A dream, it was all a dream.
A beeping sound met her ears. Slightly moving her head she saw an IV monitor connected to her. Also a drip continued pushing saline into her body.
She felt the sterile medicine smell waft up her nose.
Hospital, she concluded.
Her head felt heavy, eyes drowsy and yet as she turned her head to her right one glance at her bed-side table and her heart missed a beat.
There sat a familiar sapphire ring gleaming brightly.
