|Chapter 3-Honeytrap|

Rudra woke up with a start, his hazy gaze slowly adapting to the light seeping through the shades. He glanced at his surroundings in confusion, he wasn’t in his room. He was in his office cabin, on the couch. And then it dawned on him. Rudra lazily changed his posture, not willing to get up just yet. As he faced the ceiling, he suddenly became aware of his sore neck.

“Ow!”

The faint sound of agony sounded too loud in the empty room. He rubbed the side of his neck and glanced at the clock on the wall.

8:39 am.

He could rest for a bit longer. Or so he thought.

As soon as he had closed his eyes with a sigh, the door to the room swung open. Rudra’s eyes flew open and he stared at the person who had rudely disturbed his sleep with a groan. Ananya dropped a neatly folded set of clothes on top of him.

“Just because you slept in the office doesn’t mean that you have to spend the rest of the day wearing the same clothes as yesterday. Look at yourself! You look like a zombie. I bet if Maya sees you like this, she’s gonna make a scene again. Go change, now!”

Rudra scoffed as he sat up on the couch.

“No I don’t look like a zombie Anu and no, Maya isn’t going to make a scene if she sees me like this, cause she-“

Rudra stopped midway through the sentence, something told him it was better not to bring up the part that Maya was here when he came in last night. Though Ananya claimed to be a big fan of Maya, he knew that she wouldn’t like a scenario where he would be alone with a woman and worse, have dinner together, even if that woman was Maya. And though he told her time and again not to see him as a potential love interest, Ananya always crossed the line and he just didn’t have the heart to tell his best friend to back off. Ananya raised an eyebrow.

“Cause she what?”

Rudra got up from the couch with a sigh.

“Nothing. I’ve gotta go to the washroom to freshen up.”

He picked up the clothes and headed towards the washroom door.

Ananya put her hands on her hips as she stared at him.

“On second thought, you don’t need to comb your hair okay? You look sexy with your ruffled hair.”

Rudra rolled his eyes.

“Anu please!”

Ananya defensively raised her arms.

“Ok, ok, I’ll shut up now!”

She pursed her lips and pulled out a chair to sit as Rudra closed the door with a thud.

***

“Maya mailed me the drafts of the first two chapters yesterday.”

Ananya carefully placed the printed copies on the desk. Rudra picked up the papers reluctantly.

“Really? Wow!”

Ananya looked at him dubiously.

“Yeah, why?”

Rudra shrugged.

“It’s just that when I barged in here last night, she tucked away her notes so fast like she thought her story would be damned if I saw a word!”

“Wait, she was here when you came last night?”

Ananya’s voice sounded more panicked than surprised. Rudra nodded.

“Yeah, she was.”

Rudra tried to keep his tone normal. He cursed himself in his mind. Slip of tongue had a really bad timing.

Ananya’s face scrunched up. Her tone was accusing in a sort of way.

“What was she doing here so late?”

Rudra shrugged again.

“I don’t know and I don’t care! I don’t really understand this woman.”

Ananya sounded irked now.

“And you really don’t need to understand. Like seriously don’t delve into it too much. Like she said, ours is a business deal. Let’s keep things that way. We really don’t need to befriend her or anything.”

Ananya said with a wave of her hand as if to dismiss the topic. Rudra smirked, raising an eyebrow at her.

“You are the one telling me this? Who is such a die hard fan of Maya Jaisingh the great and who was jumping like a schoolgirl to meet her?”

Ananya rolled her eyes.

“I wasn’t that excited okay? Yes, I always dreamed to have her onboard. Because let’s be honest, she is mind bogglingly famous. And all of her books are bestsellers. That’s why I wanted to sign her. For RuAn. But that’s it!”

Rudra pulled her cheeks, laughing lightheartedly.

“Oh my God Anu! I didn’t expect you to deliver such a harrowing speech! Chill! Many writers like her will come and go. Why fuss over it so much?”

Rudra cringed a bit when he saw Ananya’s face flood with relief. He didn’t like the signs but he was glad that she was relaxed.

Ananya playfully swatted his arm before picking up the papers. Rudra sighed with relief. Something told him that he saved both of them from a great deal of tension by not mentioning his dinner with Maya. It was casual on his part, but he knew his best friend enough to know that she wouldn’t like it. Though Rudra mostly tried to deny it, it wasn’t rocket science that Ananya saw him as more than a friend. And though she always said her love was her problem, she clearly didn’t mean that.

Rudra grabbed the papers out of her hands and started flipping through them. Ananya made a face. Rudra smirked at her, turned to the first page and started reading. After a good few minutes, he glanced up at Ananya, confusion etched on his face.

“What fool reads this sh*t?”

He dropped the papers back onto the desk and went around to sit in his chair.

Ananya narrowed her eyes.

“Don’t call this sh*t okay? Just because you don’t understand something doesn’t mean it’s a piece of sh*t. It means you are a fool!”

Rudra nodded his head in annoyance.

“Seriously Anu! Swear to me and say any one sentence of that document makes any sense. Each para comes out as a riddle. There’s no story there!”

Ananya rolled her eyes and gave a dramatic sigh.

“These are only the first two chapters Rudra! Building a story needs time! And chapters! And for the record, you are not the only one who finds it confusing. On the contrary, most of the readers do. It’s her style. She’ll keep the readers in darkness until the very end. The story ends always and mind you, always with a major twist. And it’s something that’ll blow your mind away!

Rudra rubbed his chin, his gaze thoughtful. Ananya smirked.

“Why do you think her sells are that good? People love anticipation Rudra! Once you start reading her stories, they’ll pull you like magnets. Yes, you’ll be hella confused for the most of it and probably even annoyed if you aren’t familiar with her books, but you won’t be able to put it down without knowing how it ends. The climax is the game!”

Rudra tapped the desk with his fingers, his gaze drifting back to the papers.

“That good huh? Yeah makes sense. Looks like Maya has a lot in common with her books. She even talks in riddles for real. And she is hella confusing. Only God knows what surprises she has for the climax of our story.”

Rudra chuckled and Ananya joined in, both unaware that Maya stood just outside the door, smirking herself. Maya wrapped her long fingers around the door handle as she mumbled in a low voice.

“Well I don’t know about surprises Rudra. But be ready to get shocked!”

She opened the door, the smirk disappeared under the mask of her stern face.

***

Rudra jumped off the seat the moment Maya entered, startling Ananya, who whirled around in her seat and stood up the next moment to greet Maya.

“Good morning Maya.”

Rudra looked back and forth between the two ladies and then straight at Maya. Maya nodded at Ananya, not saying a word to either of them. She walked past Ananya and around the desk to stand in front of Rudra. Maya gazed at him coolly.

“Move aside.”

Her tone was usual, cold but not as chilly as Rudra expected. He realized he was blocking the space after a moment and promptly stepped aside with a polite nod.

As Maya settled on the chair, Ananya and Rudra turned on their heel to leave. Maya called out.

“Rudra”

Rudra turned around and so did Ananya. Maya dismissed her with a wave.

“You may leave.”

Ananya was going to disagree but then decided against it and with a wary glance at Rudra, she silently left the room. Rudra focused his attention on Maya. Maya turned her laptop on and started typing, as she resumed speaking.

“I need you to come over for dinner. At my place.”

Rudra opened his mouth in bafflement, he didn’t know what to say. He gaped at her, waiting for her to continue. As the silence stretched, Maya looked up at him.

“My mom invited you. She wants to meet you. And she asked me to know if you have any favorite food that she might cook?”

Maya raised her eyebrow as Rudra stood unmoving, he needed to process the whole thing.

Maya exhaled, feigning annoyance.

“So, are you gonna come?”

Rudra couldn’t hide his surprise.

“You’re asking if I’m willing to come? Like you’re not going to force me?”

Maya chuckled.

“Well, I can’t exactly kidnap you for a dinner right?”

Rudra mused.

“Actually I think you can do exactly that.”

Maya frowned and he forced a smile.

“I was joking. And of course I’ll come. If your mother is anything like you, I’ve gotta see her.”

He thought he saw something cross Maya’s face before she masked it as usual.

“My mom is nothing like me.”

It was almost a whisper, with a hint of sadness. Her somber expression troubled Rudra, he spoke with a bright smile.

“Even better.”

He saw Maya turn to him once again, her expression softened.

Rudra nodded at her before turning toward the door to leave.

***

Rudra gaped at the huge building in front of him and then back at the address Maya had mailed him. She lived in the penthouse.

“Richie rich!”

Rudra sneered at his own remark as he strode towards the entrance. The sound of the elevator startled him, he realized he had been deep in thought. He gently tucked the bouquet to his side as he entered. His heartbeat got faster with the ascension of the elevator. He was suddenly hesitant of his decision. Was this a good idea to accept Maya’s invitation? He didn’t know her at all. Worse, the little bit he did know about her, freaked the sh*t out of him. Whatever was the catch, he had to be Rudra battled against his inner self to push the ground floor button. But before he had enough time to decide, the elevator arrived at the top floor with a characteristic ‘ding’. Rudra felt exasperated. He let his feet guide him toward the double door and he timidly pressed the doorbell.

After a couple minutes, which felt like ten or more to him, the doors opened and Rudra braced himself.

A finely dressed woman probably in her late fifties stood on the other side, with a huge smile adorning her face.

“You must be Rudra!”

Her smile widened when her gaze fell on the flowers.

“Are these for me?”

She looked at him with gleaming eyes like a happy child. Rudra couldn’t help but smile back. He politely nodded and handed her the bouquet, admiring the sight of her face lighting up with joy.

“Are you going to keep him waiting outside instead of inviting him in, mom?”

The voice sounded familiar but the tone was not something Rudra would associate with Maya JaiSingh. He followed her voice to see her descend the stairs, her hair falling like a cascade over her shoulders, her stilettos clicking against the marble of the floor as she came towards him, her strides confident and elegant as ever. She stood beside her mother, nodding , gesturing him to come inside. Rudra’s eyes fell to her lips, she chose a dark red shade to go with her usual black dress code. Rudra couldn’t help his eyes traveling over her body and his breath hitched. Her dress hugged her curves and Rudra couldn’t remember the last time he found himself admiring a woman so much that he almost felt guilty. He snapped to attention when Maya’s mother gently shook his arm.

“Why don’t you sit down, beta?”

Rudra felt his legs brush against the sofa of the living room. Heat ran up to his cheeks and he rubbed his chin, clearing his throat. He rarely faced such embarrassment.

When he was done with mentally lecturing himself to behave, he turned to see Maya helping her mother in the kitchen and for a moment, he saw her in a new light. She was a totally different person around her mother. He heard her laugh for the first time and he didn’t know why his heart fluttered. This Maya was someone else, someone capable of caring, capable of love. Rudra was surprised, not by Maya but by the fact that he started to feel something familiar again. And this wasn’t good. Rudra Roy knew better which path led to a dead end.

***

Rudra expected and hoped the dinner to go quiet and uneventful. But he should have known better. Maya’s mother was a stark contrast to her. While Maya barely spoke a word, the lovely lady found it difficult to stop talking. Rudra had to awkwardly put on a smile as she gushed about him. He couldn’t help drifting his gaze to Maya, who had switched back to her silent mode and was gracefully sticking her fork into steak bites. Did she really talk about him that much? Rudra was pondering the same when he felt her foot brush against his leg. His nerve endings became hyper aware at the mild touch and he almost choked on his food. Maya’s mother lightly patted his back as he heard Maya mumble a “sorry”. Rudra bit the inside of his cheek and excused himself to go to the washroom. Maya volunteered to show him the way, to his surprise and dismay. The last thing he wanted was to be alone with her, even for a few minutes.

Rudra pinched the bridge of his nose as Maya led the way. He resisted with his whole being not to glance at her and sighed with relief when Maya came to a stop before a door. He nodded at her, gladly turning the knob. As soon as he stepped inside, he locked the door and sighed in relief, gripping the edges of the sink. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead and he felt utterly bothered. This wasn’t his normal behavior. This wasn’t how he was. He didn’t know what in the world was wrong with him. Out of nowhere, it rang through his head.

Maya

He turned on the faucet, splashing his face with water. He looked at his reflection in the mirror. He thought his face would appear contorted, instead there was a glint in his eyes, something dark he didn’t know had existed within. Rudra squeezed his eyes shut, focusing his whole being to control his rapid heartbeat. He rubbed his face dry with a napkin and stepped outside.

He found Nandini patiently waiting for him at the table, while Maya had finished her meal and had started cleaning. Rudra felt reassured seeing her nonchalant, he knew hell would break loose if she got a hunch something’s up. He walked up to Nandini with a smile.

“I’m sorry Aunty but I ought to get going now.”

Nandini seemed alarmed.

“Is everything alright beta?”

She stood up with an anxious face.

“Everything is fine Aunty. I just need to go home now, that’s all. But thanks for hosting me. It was really nice to meet you.”

He gently hugged her and found Maya looking at the two of them, with a smile that seemed genuine. He felt a tug at his heart and he reluctantly broke the hug.

Nandini frantically looked around and almost shouted.

“Maya, where’s the cake?”

Rudra desperately waved his hand.

“Aunty it’s ok, really. I’ll have dessert another day.”

Rudra lightly patted her arm and briefly turned to Maya, barely meeting her gaze.

“Thanks for the dinner Maya, again. Good night.”

***

Maya swirled the red wine in her glass as she traced the rim with her thumb. The gentle breeze of the night flowing over her balcony was a heavenly bliss. She put down the glass and picked up her phone to shoot a quick message.

“Let’s meet tomorrow baby. I miss you too!”

She smirked and shook her head as Rishi replied with a heart emoji.

She picked up her fountain pen and resumed writing.

“The prey writhed with all its might and will. But desperation was hardly a smart tactic. The predator’s grip was too strong. And surely the prey had to give in.”

She took a sip of her wine, her eyes glinting in the dark.

“How long do you think you can run from me Rudra? I’m done with the chase. The hunt is over. You’re mine now.”
