|Chapter 2-Puzzle|
The car tires screeched against concrete as Rudra took a sharp turn and put his car in park. Unstrapping the seat belt, he pulled out his car key and stepped out. The morning air brushed off his scrunched up face as he made his way toward the entrance of the building.
As he walked through the empty corridors, he couldn’t help being aware of the utter silence, it seemed almost ominous, like a haunted house. Did all of his employees quit their jobs without any notice or for some unknown reason, all of them were fashionably late? As the question wandered through his unruly mind, Rudra casually opened the door to his cabin and his eyes fell on the person sitting behind the desk. His foot stopped midway of crossing the threshold as he reminded himself of the new setup which he clearly hadn’t gotten accustomed to.
Maya spoke in her usual cold tone, without bothering to look up from the file on her desk.
“I hardly think that I have to go through the unnecessary task of teaching you manners like a kid in the kindergarten. You forgot to knock before entering. I think you should apologize and make sure not to make the same mistake again.”
Rudra wasn’t quite in the mood to endure her tantrums first thing in the morning. And though this wasn’t what happened to him first thing in the morning, he was dangerously on edge of loosing his temper. He slammed the door shut and retraced his footsteps back toward the reception.
That’s when his eyes landed on Ananya, who was hurriedly making her way toward him. She spoke in a hushed tone.
“What happened?”
Rudra couldn’t help the sharp yell that fell out of his mouth.
“That’s exactly what I’m thinking! What the hell is happening? Where is everyone else?”
Ananya anxiously glanced towards what was now Maya’s cabin and then resumed talking in lowered tone.
“Maya mentioned in her contract that no one can be present in this office except for us. Not until she has settled in her cabin. You probably missed it. I’ve rescheduled timing in the office. The staff arrives at 11am.”
Rudra looked at her dubiously, trying to decipher what his best friend just said. It sounded like the most absurd thing he had ever heard in his life.
“I’m assuming she is the reason why you’re whispering? Okay, so let me get this straight, you aren’t bluffing right? She literally cited that?
Ananya nodded.
“Yeah, she did.”
Rudra pursed his lips into a tight smile and then banged his fist against the wall.
“You know what? This deal is over! That self proclaimed perfectionist narcissist isn’t going to ruin the company that is our dream, that we worked so hard to build. I’m gonna end this deal right here, right now!”
Rudra turned towards the cabin, his expression resolute. Ananya held him back, her hand insistently grabbing his arm. Rudra sighed, clenching his teeth. Ananya’s voice turned soft, concerned.
“Rudra, you’re apparently in a bad mood. What happened? Other than Maya, I mean?”
Rudra took a look at Ananya’s troubled face and didn’t have the heart to not give her an answer. His face scrunched up even more.
“The usual. MJ Roy happened. Looks like he doesn’t ever learn about boundaries neither will he ever learn to respect them.”
Ananya’s face fell. She wanted so desperately to help Rudra. But she knew he won’t let her. He didn’t ever tell her what went wrong in the first place. But as always, she didn’t mind trying.
“Rudra, what did MJ uncle ever do to you?”
There was despair in her tone and it broke Rudra’s heart, just a little, knowing very well how his life was affecting his best friend, who cared for him so deeply. He looked away and pinching the bridge of his nose, gently freed his arm from Ananya’s grip. He cleared his throat as he glanced back at her.
“I can’t do this now Anu.”
He almost choked and decided it was best to stop saying anything further. He brushed past her, needing some fresh air to calm his nerves. Ananya looked at his retreating form, with a pained expression. Unknown to both, Maya stood just behind the cabin door, noting the whole conversation. She walked back to the desk, placed her palms on the smooth glass, her breathing ragged. Tears pricked at the back of her eyes as she mumbled.
“MJ Roy”
***
Rudra returned to the office late in the evening. He let Ananya know to not wait for him. He had no intention of going home. Neither to Ananya’s place. As much as he acknowledged her concern for him, there were some aspects of his life that he allowed no one to take a peek, not even his childhood best friend. And given the events of the morning, he knew Ananya will only nag him about what her beloved MJ uncle did this time to get a reaction out of his elder son.
As he entered the dimly lit corridor, his phone pinged with notifications. He opened the app to see texts from Ananya.
“Are you in the office yet?”
“Looks like you needed a LOT of ‘fresh air’.”
“When are you gonna get home?”
“Or you can come to my place?”
“:D”
Rudra smiled. His Anu was adorably cute sometimes. He texted back.
“Yes, I’m in the office.”
“Yeah, I kinda needed to clear my head, if you know what I mean.”
“Actually I think I’m gonna crash in the office tonight, the couch in our cabin is comfortable enough to sleep. Oops not our cabin anymore. It’s that.. you know what forget it! I’m not gonna let that woman ruin my mood anymore. She can babble whatever the shit she wants when she is here. But now that she has left, this place belongs to me! And I’m gonna reconnect with my fav place! XD.”
As Rudra walked with his full attention on his phone screen, he missed the light coming from his cabin at the end of the hallway. He opened the door with a relieved sigh, almost jumping the next moment when he saw the person hunched on the desk, long fingers holding a fancy fountain pen, her eyes flicked to his face the instant he entered. He wondered what she was doing here at this hour but was too flabbergasted to actually ask. Maya quickly folded the notebook, the gesture made Rudra roll his eyes. And instantly her glare reminded him of his blunder all over again.
He stepped out of the room, cursed under his breath and then knocked twice. Maya’s cool voice reverberated through the empty space.
“Come in.”
Rudra entered once again, stared at blank space as he muttered a ‘sorry’ through clenched teeth. Maya folded her arms, gazing at him coolly. Then with a wave of her hand, she gestured him to sit. Rudra didn’t have the energy to retort. Though he apparently took a day off, he was mentally exhausted and the last thing he wanted was to start an argument he knew he couldn’t win. He walked towards the desk and pulled out a chair and slopped down with a heavy sigh. His stomach rumbled, reminding him of his skipped lunch. The sound was loud enough to make him flustered. He squeezed his eyes shut, bracing himself for an insult.
“Looks like someone’s hungry.”
He opened his eyes to see Maya gazing at him intently. That wasn’t a harsh enough statement that he expected.
Maya put aside her notebook and pen and retrieved a container. As she opened the lid, delicious aroma of savory food filled the room and Rudra almost moaned. His stomach grumbled again.
He couldn’t help but take a look at the contents, the smell rafting into his nostrils, making him even more hungry. Maya chuckled. Rudra’s eyes shot back at her. For a split second, he forgot all his embarrassment and was merely fascinated by his feat. He had heard Maya Jaisingh chuckle. That was something he never would have imagined possible.
Maya gently pushed the box toward the midline and Rudra gladly accepted her gesture to share. The food tasted heavenly, mostly because he didn’t even realize that he felt starved. As he continued eating, he saw Maya take a bite herself. And suddenly, everything seemed too simple, too normal. Like they did this everyday. No squabbles, no ego, no secrets, no backstabbing, no nothing. Just two people who knew each other well and did normal stuff. Perfectly normal, utterly simple. And for the first time that day, Rudra Roy felt truly relieved.
***
Maya gently pulled the door on her way out, careful not to wake Rudra, who was dozing off on the couch. She caught a glimpse of his sleeping form and his serene face. The hint of a smile played at the corner of her lips as the door closed with a faint click.
As she drove her way home, she muttered the lines she wrote today.
“He thought he solved the puzzle. Little did he know it was as complex as he mistook it to be simple. Instead of putting the pieces together, he blew them apart. He was in pain, he was living in the past. That was his biggest weakness. He tried to run away from something he couldn’t. Instead of fighting, he chose to flee. His proneness would be his downfall. And the reason would be someone who set on a quest to win the war against the past, so she could write the future. Someone called Maya.”
