|Chapter 4-The Art of Seduction|

Rudra set the brewer in motion as he watched the dark brown coffee pour down onto the cup. He added the creamer and sugar, giving his drink a good stir before taking a sip. Warm, strong, bittersweet, just the way he liked it. Maybe his day wouldn’t go so bad. And then, his eyes fell on her. She strode down the corridor with sheer poise that she invariably radiated. As she vanished from his sight, Rudra took a large gulp of his coffee and poured the rest in the sink.

A moment later, Ananya entered.

“Hey, you’re finished with your coffee? Good, Maya wants to talk to us.”

Ananya was about to turn around when she saw Rudra lingering in his spot.

“Rudra?”

Rudra startled out of his reverie.

“Yeah?”

“Did you hear me?”

Ananya pondered if he again had to deal with any issues at home or Maya slandered him or added another obnoxious clause to their contract. She didn’t have a chance to ask Rudra about their little chit-chat the previous day. She had called him at night but he didn’t pick it up which troubled her further.

“Is anything wrong? Why are you acting weird?”

Rudra ran a hand through his hair.

“Everything’s fine Anu. You go talk to her, I’ll join you guys in a minute.”

With a skeptic glance at his face, Ananya nodded.

“Don’t be late.”

Rudra took a deep breath and straightened his posture.

“Alright, big boy, you’re no one to run from your fears.”

He cringed a bit knowing how awefully flawed that statement could be in a few cases.

He knocked on the door to Maya’s cabin twice, rather timidly and entered the room after Maya’s approval came.

He sat down on a chair beside Ananya and reluctantly gazed at Maya across the desk. She didn’t pay him any heed. She was briefing Ananya on something. Rudra let out a sigh as he tried to concentrate on the convo.

Water under the bridge

“We were actually thinking of printing the chapters when you’re done with the whole book.”

Ananya blurted out, she appeared edgy.

Maya nodded.

“I know it’s convenient but get the completed chapters printed. I want this book to be ready for publication as soon as I’m done with the last chapter.”

Ananya sounded a bit deterred but nodded anyway.

“Ok, I’ll get it done.”

Maya turned to Rudra and he perceived glancing at her was a slip. All the pent-up feelings emerged like hot lava.

“I want you to tell me about your publication strategies. I’ll run my manager through your work plan and then we’ll finalize it.”

Rudra kept averting his gaze from her face without trying to come out as awkward.

“Sure, but I think Ananya is better at explaining this stuff than me, right Anu?”

He pointedly turned towards Ananya and gave a light pat on her back.

“Meanwhile I’ll take care of the printing.”

Rudra stood up with a tight-lipped smile and left the room before Ananya or Maya could object.

Rudra tapped his fingers on the printer, mulling over 10Hacks-on-how-to-deal-with-MayaJaiSingh. He was pensive enough to not register the door opening nor the approaching footsteps. He sensed someone’s presence behind him a bit too late and turned around to find Maya staring at him.

“Why are you avoiding me?”

Maya’s voice was resolute.

“What?”

Rudra pushed the word out of his mouth, but that’s not what he wanted to say. He felt cornered. He didn’t think Maya would notice but here they were, face to face, no place for him to escape. The moment he dreaded all day presented itself with full impact.

“I said why are you avoiding me Rudra? A simple question.”

Maya’s tone was unwavering. Rudra gulped. In his mind, he searched for words but the only comeback he found was ‘I don’t have a simple answer to this’.

Maya stepped forward and Rudra took a step back.

“Do you want me to answer it for you?”

Maya said in an ominous tone as she approached him. Rudra felt his back hit the wall. He was literally cornered now. Maya stroked the side of his face with the tip of her finger, smirking at the sheen of sweat.

She closed the distance, her eyes dropping to his lips. Rudra involuntarily closed his eyes in anticipation of her lips touching his. He felt her hot breath and the next moment her lips faintly touched his ear.

“Because you want to do things to me you’re too mortified to say aloud.”

Her whisper was sultry, it kindled Rudra in a way beyond his imagination. He grabbed her arms and mildly pushed her back.

“What do you want?”

His voice was gruff, exhausted. Jaded from fighting the undeniable desire that he felt for her.

“You.”

Maya’s voice was smooth, single-minded.

Rudra breathed out heavily as he briefly shut his eyes close. When he opened them, he found Maya peering at him with a knowing smile, a dark glint in her eyes that mirrored the shade of his.

“Wrong number. I’m not interested in you or any other woman for that matter.”

Rudra tried to keep his voice calm though that didn’t go very well for him. Maya chuckled.

“Are you saying you’re gay? Because I know that’s hell of a lie Rudra.”

Rudra felt his temper flaring. In one swift motion, he grabbed the sides of her arms and pulled her towards him. His tone was menacing.

“Whoever you think you are, you don’t know sh*t about me.”

He grasped what he had done, taking in the dark storm in Maya’s eyes. He let her go and took a step back, guilt written over his face.

“I’m really sorry. I got carried away. You’re mistaken Maya. I’m sorry to disappoint you.”

He dared a glance at her, her expression unreadable. He turned to leave the room.

“You’re the one who’s wide off the mark Rudra, not me.”

Rudra turned towards her and saw Maya approach him once again with the hint of a smile.

“It‘s not love that I want. I want you. All of you. You don’t have to love me back and neither will I.”

Rudra squinted at her, his lips pressed in a hard line.

“What the hell do you mean?”

Maya gave a low chuckle, closing the distance once again. She looked right into his eyes, their faces inches apart and her hedonic voice returned.

“I’m saying we can have each other. But there’s no need of emotions. No strings attached. I know that’s what you’re scared of. And trust me, I’m not very fond either.”

Rudra gulped looking down at her face. His hands were itching to touch her face, move his fingers through her hair and crash his lips on hers. But then, he looked away and closed his eyes. He gently took a step back and turned towards Maya, his gaze hard.

“In case you’re wondering, I politely reject your offer, Miss JaiSingh. You’re my sponsor and author. I respect that. And we have a deal to fulfill. Don’t make me regret it. And stop making assumptions from next time. You don’t know anything about me. And I would expect you to respect my personal space in the future.”

Maya cocked her eyebrow. Rudra exhaled.

“I know my body language has been misleading. I’m sorry for that. I’d be careful from now on. I think I’ve said enough.”

He strode out of the room without another word, leaving behind Maya with a look of triumph on her face.

Rudra sat on the bar stool, a glass of whiskey in his hand. He told himself he had had enough, maybe even a bit too much for the day, but he had no intention to stop. On a random day, he would be out of his head. But his good old buddy was no help as he dwelled on the heart-to-heart he had with Maya. Apparently Maya JaiSingh could pack a punch way better than his father. Two glasses did fine to make him forget any filthy trick pulled by MJ Roy. He wasn’t drunk and that was making him insane with each passing minute. As he swirled the liquid, he turned his glassy eyes toward the spot where he had seen the great Maya JaiSingh for the second time in his life. When she had poured whiskey on his wound with her smug face. That was her way with everything. He felt abashed. Maya saw him looking at her with his not-so-polite gaze. She saw it all. And now he was trapped. He couldn’t escape the fact that he lusted for her. There was no denying. He almost slammed the glass on counter and mumbled a low ‘Thank God’ for not breaking it. With the bit of sanity he had left, he paid the bill and grabbed his car keys.

The ring of the bell went off a bit earlier than she had anticipated. Nevertheless, she got up from her desk, quirking a brief smile and with a flick of her finger, slid a strap of her silk nightgown over her shoulder. By the time she reached the door, the bell chimed again and she slid her fingers around the handle to ease the misery of her impatient guest.

Rudra was about to press the bell again but then the doors opened and his breath hitched at the sight before him. Maya stood with one hand casually pressed against the door, while the other rested on her hip. Her silky gown hugged her body and stopped way above her knees. He took it all in, utterly aware of her burning gaze on him. He looked at her, she seemed like she was waiting for him, knowing he would come.

“What do you wa-“

Before she could finish her sentence, Rudra’s lips were on hers, first gentle, then urgent. She almost fell due to the impact but Rudra’s arms around her supported her as he stroked her back. Maya couldn’t help the moan escaping her lips. A tingle surfed through her body. She pulled back with effort and looked at him with a smirk.

“So much for personal space.”

Rudra groaned and pounced on her once more, this time his mouth found her neck. Maya pushed him away again. His glazed over eyes blazed with fire, a muscle in his jaw twitched.

“Wha-“

Maya lightly pressed her fingers over his mouth.

“My mom’s home. We can’t. Not here.”

She breathed out the words gruffly, clearly not in the state to form complete sentences. For a moment, Rudra felt dejected. But before his guilt could take over his mind, Maya’s fingers laced through his.

“But we can get all the privacy we want in my room.”

The hunger emerged once again in his eyes and Maya pecked his lips before closing the doors and leading him to her bedroom.

“The game was set, the pawns and pieces were in place. But the black queen didn’t sit on the board. She was above it all, manipulating, guiding every move. Victory was inevitable for her, she set the rules. Now it was only a matter of time, before she won.”

Maya reclined on her armchair, resting her feet on the ottoman as she gazed at the sleeping form of Rudra. His face tranquil, his even breathing being the only sound in the quiet place. She felt herself drawn. She turned her eyes toward the balcony. The city was sleeping but she didn’t have the luxury to rest. Not until she could make a certain business magnate’s nights sleepless. Then she could rest her eyes and sleep in peace.

“MJ Roy, here I come.”

A lone tear slid down her cheek, she didn’t bother to wipe it. Instead, she let more to stream down as she pressed her hand over her mouth, silencing her agony.
