Broken Promises
"Ghar chalo Aaliya! Ye drama band karo." Zain said in a stern voice, loosing his patience, not wanting to let his helplessness show.
"Drama?" Aaliya scoffed. "Tumhe ye sab drama lagta hai Zain? Tumne hi to kaha tha na ki main chali jaun. To ab kyun rok rahe ho?"
Zain was left dumbfounded. Why was he stopping her? But then again, what had gotten into that thick head of hers to make her leave him? "Tum ek baat batao Aaliya, itne dino se to ek hi baat pe adi hui thi, ki tum iss nikaah to nibhaogi. Bada kehti thi ki tum mujhe chod ke nahi jaogi, bhale main kitni bhi koshish kar lu. To ab kyun jaa rahi ho? Darr gayi? Haar gayi? Aisa kya ho gaya ki tum meri baaton ko seriously lene lag gayi ho?"
Should she tell him? Should she reveal the conversation she had had with Surraiya? "Jo tumne mere parivaar ke liye kiya hai Zain, uske badle tumne jo manga wo tumhe de rahi hoon."
"Mera wo matlab nahi tha Aalilya!" He roared, having lost his cool. Why was she interpreting him in such a wrong way?
"To kya matlab tha Zain?" She asked, her own temper rising.
He didn't want to tell her. He didn't want her to know that he only wanted her to go temporarily and then come back. He didn't want her to know that he had felt bad for her for not being able to spend time with her family. Heck, he just didn't want her to know that he had felt something for her. So he slowly took steps towards her, and with each step he took forward, she took a step backwards. "Tumne nikaah ke waqt waade kiye the, ye mat bhoolo." He had her cornered into the rough walls of the station. "Waade todne ke liye nahi hote Aaliya, nibhaane ke liye hote hai."
She laughed, a sardonic one that is. Aaliya saw the confusion flash on his face and his eyebrows creased. "Waade todne ke nahi hote, ye tum mujhe mat sikhao Zain!" She replied fiercely.
"Tumhara matlab kya hai?"
"Jo waada tumne meri Ammi se kiya tha, wo to tumne bohot achche se tod diya. Yaad hai kya kaha tha unse? Ki mujhe khush rakhoge! Jab tum khud ek waada nahi nibha pae, to mujhe to mat hi sikhao Mr Zain Abdullah." She spat at him, not being able to hold back the angry tears that made their way out of her eyes and down her cheeks.
Zain took a step back, feeling the guilt seep in. She was right; she stood corrected. He had conveniently broken the one promise he had made to his Phuphs. He had not once tried to make her happy, not once tried to give this marriage a chance while she had done so all along.
"But you know what Zain? I change my mind! Main nahi jaa rahi Bhopal." Zain looked at her, his eyes gleaming with what anyone would have labelled as happiness. "Pata hai kyun? Kyunki ab tak maine sirf tumhare bare mein socha! Main ye to bhool hi gayi, ki Maamu ka kya haal hoga, Abbu kya sochenge, meri Ammi ko kitne logo ki baatein sunni padengi. Lekin ab main soch rahi hoon, un sab ke baare mein soch rahi hoon jinhe meri kadar hai! From now on Zain, you come last." And with that, she pushed past him, picked up her suitcase and started walking towards the exit, with Zain following her behind.
He couldn't help but smile. Of course she'd said he would come last, of course it had hurt; she probably disliked him even more now. So what?, he thought to himself. He would make amends; he would live up to his promise. And she so cannot resist my charm! He smirked to himself. "Arre o Maamu Ki Bhaanji! Ruko to." He sprinted towards her, snatching her steel suitcase from her hand. "Kitna bhaari hai!" He whined.
Aaliya looked at him in disbelief. "Tumhe koi farak nahi padta?"
"Nahi!" He grinned at her, just to piss her off. Oh how he loved it! "Achcha hum ghar pe kya bolenge? Tumhara ye suitcase. God Aaliya, look at the mess you've made." She glared at him, her eyes spitting fire. And she's back! Zain thought to himself, watching her walk away in a huff. "Arre ruko to!" he yelled out, "Tumhe to ye bhi nahi pata ki gaadi kahan khadi hai." Zain quickened his pace, the huge smile not leaving his face. He had succeeded, she hadn't left, and that was good enough for now.
