actually divorce said thrice in one sitting can invalidate the marriage... there are many Islamic hadiths on it... either the divorce can be said on 3 separate occasions or on one, but its considered valid. however, after the 3rd talak is said, a 3 month cooling off period is set within which its advised tht families try to bring the couple together and if within the 3 months they do get together then the divorce is NOT accepted and they remain married otherwise they are legally in islams eyes divorced .
the cooling off period thing is something I recall learning about as part of my religious studies course in school

Yes you are right about this. The man has to repudiate his wife thrice with intervals of three months each and during this time period, the couple must try and reconcile. The wife may also remarry during this cooling off period since she has been divorced by her husband however this isn't necessary in order for her to get back with her husband, if she is still in the process of the three repudiations. However once the three months have passed after the third talaq, then an intervening marriage on part of the wife must take place, in order for her to remarry her first husband, but this must be coincedental and not pre planned.
and let me clear one more thing about the consumation part, in islam even an act of consumation will suffice- the couple should have had an opportunity to enter into sexual relations, for example they are alone in a room.
The info i have provided is authentic since i m a muslim studying law and therefore hav done shariah (islamic law) in detail.

^^the 3 month period also has another meaning, its jus to ensure the woman isn't pregnant - becos if she was then divorce isn't accepted if she is. I haven't heard abt the fact tht u are allowed 2 marry within 3 months of the final talaq...what I read was tht within the 3 months they aren't allowed 2 remarry...after the 3 month period if they still r happy with the divorce it will be granted in islam as long as the wife isn't pregnant...
