Chapter 3
Shakti was leaning against the metallic post one hand in one pocket, the other holding a cigar, he drew a long puff and watched the smoky wisps fade into the air. Samar caught the strong whiff of smoke and leather that clung to Shakti's body as he drew nearer to him. From a distance he seemed to be in a pensive mood but on approaching him that illusion faded as quick as the dispersing smoke from his cigar as he realised Shakti was checking out a Soc girl from across the street.
'You gonna lead the way Shakti' Samar asked. They were shortly joined by Arjun who had snuck out from his broken home. Samar had a soft spot for Arjun, after him he was the youngest and an orphan. His foster parents did not give a damn about his existence.
Shakti pulled Samar rather roughly into his arm by way of greeting him. Then he mussed up Arjun hair much to his annoyance, if there was one thing that Arjun valued about himself it was his well-kempt hair.
'Cut it out Shakti' he said pouting.
They walked some distance further and came across 3 little kids knelt down on the grass who stopped what they were doing as they approached.
'Hey I see you guys playing with my grass.' Shakti said intimidatingly.
'What you doing here?' He confronted them.
One kid mumbled something.
Shakti put his hand on his ear.
'Kya? You know I don't like little kids. I don't like them, I just don't...' He eyed them darkly. The kids started to run away as Shakti, Samar and Arjun chased them across the fields.
By then dusk was fast coming. The lads snuck over the rickety gate into the drive-in open air cinema. They chose a spot near the back and slunk on the seats before them. It was a b-movie, so predictable and mind numbing that the cinema started to fill up with a background noise and chatter.
'My feet are cold' Samar complained.
'Well you should've worn your boots stupid' Shakti responded. Two girls came and sat in the seats in front of them. It was Ananya and Bhavna. Samar tried to dive low in his seat, he didnt really want to have anything to do with Soc girls, especially not with Shakti around. Ananya seemed rather miffed.
'I don't care what he wants, I came to see a movie I'm gonna see a movie' she said to her friend and looked straight ahead at the screen.
Shakti watched them with keen interest following their every movements and slowly put a cigar in his mouth. Samar knew where this was going and didn't like it one bit. One glance at Shakti confirmed his fear. He had that dangerous look in his eyes as he studied the girls sat in front of him. He leant forward very quickly inches within Ananyas vision and lit his cigar for her to see, mumbling something under his breath when it didn't light up before he fell back into the chair while keeping his eyes fixed on her. Bhavna giggled giving a furtive glance at Ananya who flushed and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear while continuing to watch the movie. She had an air of dignity about her that intrigued Shakti, he hadn't met anyone like her before, most of them were either too crass and loud, or too fearful, but she didn't appear that way, she seemed self-composed and assured.
'Some cute laundiya' he said loud enough for her to hear him. He leant forward again more slowly this time and right into her, till his mouth was inches short of her ear and whispered,
'Is that hair for real?' making her wince. He ran a finger down a loose strand. A slight smirk curled his mouth, and a wicked desire lit in his eyes as he took in her seemingly reciprocating but subtle smile.

'Is it for real?' He repeated bringing his face ever closer till he was brushing her cheek. His breath tickled her skin, making her wince in surprise at his close proximity. Ananya was rubbing her neck in embarrassment and looked at her friend. Bhavna had to put her hand over her mouth to stop giggling at the scenario as she watched the rebellious looking greaser flirt with her friend. He continued to scrutinise Ananya and brushed his fingers up her neck feeling the softness of her skin against his cold fingers causing her to shudder at his touch. She was about to shrug him off then but he immediately retracted himself, leaning back and putting his feet on the back of her chair managing to fall while bringing his chair down with him as he did so. Samar and Arjun burst into fits of laughter and was joined by Bhavna while Ananya looked behind her with mild surprise and giggled quickly facing the front again as he got himself up and sat down. Shakti smirked not in the least fazed by what any other person would perceive as humiliating in such a situation. He resumed his seat and once more leant forward whispering into her ear.

'You're soft...Tell me, how can I know that you're soft all over?' He said slyly, Samar could sense her sudden change of mood as she grew stiff and straightened her back.
'Are you soft down..' He stroked his fingers suggestively across her waist. She jerked at his touch and abruptly waved his hand off with increasing irritation. Shakti enjoyed preying on unsuspecting girls and embarrassing them, he would say all kinds of vulgar things to them and maybe Amar and Garv would have gone along with him too just to see how far they could go in embarrassing these uptown girls. But Samar was sensible, he knew these girls weren't to be messed about with especially Ananya. And now Shakti was testing his limits with her, he would go as far as he pleased. Samar knew he had to intervene but felt choked up by the sudden switch in the atmosphere.
'Get your feet off my chair and shut your trap' she said harshly as he propped his feet upon it from behind her. He smirked roguishly at her, her irritation only spurned him further. He leant into her again and tapped her earring
'Kyu beh? Who's going to stop me, your boyfriend?'
'Why don't you leave us alone okay.'
'Why you getting worked up for laundiya, I was only making small talk'
'You better leave us alone or I'll call the cops.'' she replied masking her fear behind a cool facade.
'Oh my my, you have me scared to death..dekh Samar, look how this laundiya is making me shake.' He answered in a bored tone.
Samar found his voice and said timidly
'Come on Shakti, leave her alone'
Bhavna leant into Ananya as if they couldn't hear her from in front while saying quite loudly,
'He's probably one of them greasers that escaped from jail'
'Sure whatever you say honey' Shakti replied indifferently. He began tapping the cigar ashes on the edge of her chair where she could see.
'Be nice and leave us alone' Ananya said firmly.
'Im never nice' Shakti said dangerously and neared her again.
'Can I interest you in a coke or something?' She felt his breath against her hair.
'I would not accept anything from you if I was lying dead in a desert, greaser' she spat
'Hey don't be like that.' he said rather charmingly nearing closer to her ear.
'Get lost hood!' She cried. Hood was what they called the greasers when they had nothing good to say about them.
Shakti snorted 'I didn't know you had this problem with..with yelling in my face.' Ananya ignored him staring straight ahead.
Shakti stood up.
'Alright, I know when I'm not wanted' He shrugged and strolled off. She swerved around hastily to face Samar and Arjun who became instantly afraid of her confrontational look.
'Are you two going to get in on us too? She lashed out at
Samar who looked at her wide-eyed
'No'
'You don't seem the type anyway.' She relaxed her voice and started to size them up.
'How old are you guys?'
Samar answered '20'. Bhavna said
'Thats funny I thought you were you-'
'Older' Ananya cut her off. Samar was thankful, they were sensitive about their ages, it bugged him a lot that he hung about with the gang and yet was treated like a kid by some.
'Whats your names' she enquired kindly.
'Samar.. Thakur, and that's my friend Arjun'
'Oh! You're Garvs brother, the one that works at the DX garage?' Bhavna asked interestedly.
Samar nodded.
'He is one fine looking fellow, easy on the eyes..I should've known you two were brothers' Ananya said. Samar blushed, it wasn't everyday that a Soc girl had something good to say about his brother and not everyday that he was compared to Garv, though Samar well knew she only said that to flatter him. He looked nothing like Garv but he'd take it.
'Your brother.. how come we never saw him in college?' Bhavna asked.
'He dropped out' Samar hated bringing up the subject, it didn't fit Garv one bit. Garv meant more to him than a drop-out and yet that's probably what these girls would now know him as.
Shakti strided in the fray again balancing their cans of coke in his arms. He handed one each to them all and lastly came to Ananya

'Here you go, thought maybe this might cool you off'
Ananya shot him an incredulous look as he gave her the can and sat on the seat next to her sticking another cigar in his mouth while looking at the screen. She fixed her eyes on him before splashing the drink into his face while saying
'Maybe you should cool off greaser, learn how to talk and act properly then maybe I'll cool off too.' She snapped. But her reaction only incited him as he gazed at her dangerously; if she would have any sense she would run, Samar knew that look. Shakti curled his upper lip and wiped his face with the back of his hand before pulling her into him.
'Fiery huh, just how I like them' He said with a devilish glint in his eyes. She fought strenuously against him but he was too strong and tackled her against the back of her chair.
'Let go of me!' She yelled as he brushed his face up her neck.
'Get off of me!' She tried shoving him away but he tightened his arms round her.
To Samars surprise Arjun got up and said shakily
'Shakti leave her alone'. Samar couldn't believe this was the same Arjun he knew.
Ananya pushed Shaktis arms away again as he looked at Arjun
'What d'you say?' He said almost threateningly. Ananya was still fighting him off and pushed Shakti roughly away, he let her and looked at her darkly while running his tongue against his cheek. He then looked back again at Arjun
'What d'you say to me you little shit? What d'you say?'
'..come on' Arjun said trying his utmost best to look brave before his hero; For Arjun, Shakti embodied everything he wanted, in so far as where Arjun was a nervous lad, Shakti's liberating carefree attitude was something he lacked for in his own character. Arjun had been beaten up awfully by the Socs, they had ganged up on him and Rajbir had inflicted the worse pains possible on him...It scarred him so much that he had a perpetual suspicious look on him, it was no wonder he was nervous. There was a huge gash that could still be seen on his throat, and it made Samar feel guilty that only yesterday he was thinking about how tough he looked when poor Arjun had been in a much worser shape than he.
Yet here he was standing up to someone like Shakti, he would not have stood up to anyone much less his hero, and not even Adharsh would have the nerve to confront Shakti.

'Wise ass' Shakti said looking at Arjun in disbelief. if it had been anyone but Arjun he would have given them some. He turned his head away in the other direction before throwing Ananya a deadly look. She turned her face away swiftly and he regarded her with slight disgust as he stood up. A ripple of tense silence coursed through the audience who were more interested in the mini drama that was unravelling before them than the screened movie. Shakti left the area defying people to meet his wrath as he stalked out in anger, hands jammed into his jacket pocket.
'Thank you, your Greaser friend had me scared to death' Ananya said turning to them with a sigh of relief
'Ain't nobody talk to Shakti like that' Arjun said admiringly
'The way I saw, you do' Ananya said equally impressed. Samar noted his beaming eyes, the girl had offered him a compliment about his toughness- for a girl, a Soc one at that to say nice things to him was a big deal.
Bhavna invited them to sit beside them saying they could be their protectors. Samar and Arjun exchanged looks of delight typical of male adolescent vanity.
'How come you ain't scared of us' Arjun said. They were so used to rejection and yet these girls had been unusually friendly to them, they weren't in the least scared and he didn't know if that was a good thing or bad thing.
'You're too sweet to do anything mean' Bhavna said looking at him sweetly.
'Yeh we're too young and innocent' Samar said with slight sarcasm looking at the screen.
'Nah. Not innocent, just not dirty like Shakti' Ananya said encouragingly. Samar smiled at her.
The film ended and the drive-in slowly emptied. On their way out the boys escorted them as far as the street. They must have made a funny looking sight to passers by, 2 classy looking Soc girls with 2 young scruffy looking Greasers
'Not all of us are as bad as you think' Ananya said in reply to Samar's question as to why their Soc boyfriends had it in for Greasers like them.
'Just like how today I found out that not all Greasers are mean.' She continued. Ananya asked him about his family, he had told her quite a bit about Garv but he didnt have an awful lot to say about Adarsh, it made her wonder why he talked less about him.
'We dont get along. Adharsh always tells me off whether I'm wrong or not.'
'He probably cares for you but doesn't know how to show it'
Samar thought, yeh I'm sure that's it but didn't voice it to avoid sounding blunt before her. Ananya was interested in finding out what he enjoyed doing apart from movies and books.
'Sometimes I watch the sunset from the hill and sneak out to catch the rising of it'
'I love watching sunsets too..Hey maybe we can watch it tonight from different sides of the town' she said with a bright smile on her face.
'Sounds fine' he said smiling back.
Arjun lowered his head noticing the infamous red corvette pull up'
''This was a bad idea' he muttered.
Ananya tried to pacify their fears saying 'Don't worry they won't do anything. We better leave you here. You dig well Samar. Perhaps I'll see you around.'
Bhavna said 'Tell your brother we said hi. Tell him he can stop by the campus; his business will thrive with the amount of vehicles they got there.'' Samar knew that wouldn't happen, nearly all the college students were Socs and they would not want to intermingle with the likes of Garv nor any Greaser.
Ananya swivelled around to face him again
'I hope I don't ever see Shakti again, if I do I'd probably fall in love with him'. On that she strode away with Bhavna by her side.
Samar and Arjun stood stunned on the spot. He didn't understand it, Shakti was so different to Ananya, well maybe that was it. We try to seek things we lack in others. Maybe that'd explain why Socs were hell bent on ruining Greasers, amid all their luxury and superfluous upper class lifestyle they were missing something deeper that only Greasers had, a bond to die for, to kill for. Nah that couldn't be it, Samar thought hearing the snarling voices of Rajbir and his Soc gang members in his head.. Socs just hated Greasers nothing more to it than that.
