First of all thank you so much. The update was superb. Loved the concern brothers have for each other. But the surprise of this part was arjun. Initially I had thought of him as a meek boy but he turned out to be tough actually.
Chapter 8
Shakti trundled through the
narrow corridors and entered an open room in the corner. He collapsed on the
bed and was gazing upwards at the ceiling. He just wanted to sleep. As he
closed his eyes he felt soft hands slip beneath his shirt and up his chest,
his t-shirt easily slipped off his body while he welcomed the feel of long silky hair fall against his bare skin.
Velvety legs draped around him and he felt the slow rhythmic movements of hips
press against him.
Shakti groaned as she persisted and he started sliding his hands beneath her underskirt to pull her in closer. She tilted her head back as his hands dived deeper and began pulling her by her hips into him. He was turning her words over and over in his mind; you will only push people further and further away..He kept his hands steady on her hips as her hands travelled down his smooth
chest to undo his belt buckle and with one swift move he overturned her pushing her against the bed while fiercely pressing into her till she moaned and buried his face within her hair. You will only push people further and further away.
His vision was blurry as he gazed
in confusion at the girl lying beneath him. Of course it wasn't her .
'Get out Adaa.' He said coming to a stop then decisively moving away from
her and switching on the lights. The girl had a mischievous smile on her face. She walked up to him and rested one hand on his chest. 'So soon? We were just getting started' She said curling her lips.
'Didn't you hear me? Leave!' He said raising his voice and pushed her away. He had been drunk
and in half a dream about that damn Soc girl again.
'Gee fine Shakti, don't throw a fit, I only came
at your call. Jerk.' She said spitefully leaving him alone to his thoughts.
He must've been drunk. Normally he'd hook up
with his regular for a few minutes to drive away his boredom, she was good at making him forget his troubles, really good but he wasn't in
any mood for that now.

Samar and Arjun stopped before
the rusty rickety wooden door that was almost coming off its hinges. Arjun
peered into the gap that revealed a dimly lit interior where the only light
came from some measly looking led lights hanging from the walls. He was trying
to locate Shakti among the throng of people that crowded the room. Suddenly a
rugged looking fellow pulled the door wide open and the roar of cheap music,
clinking of glass and loud rough laughter filtered through to them.
'The hell you want?' He said glaring at them
suspiciously.
'We need to see Shakti' Arjun commanded ignoring
the inhospitable look he was met with.
'Get out of here, y'all too young for a place
like this'
'He's right there I saw him go into a room, you
gotta call him its urgent!' Arjun pleaded without stopping for pause. The guy sized them up as Samar tried hard to
mask his tears.
'Tell him it's Samar and Arjun' Arjun said when
the guy kept silent.
'Alright... you best wait here' he grumbled
stumbling away to find him.
'Hey Shakti! There's two youths wanting to see you, go by the names of
Samar and Arjun!'
'What? At this hour? Alright I'll be down'
Within a few moments Shakti appeared at the
doorstop clad in a vest and some tattered jeans with some red markings on his neck.
'Ok kids what you need me for?'
As Arjun recounted all that had happened Samar studied
Shakti trying to figure out what there was about him that a girl like Ananya
saw in him, he could be so forthcoming and mean yet in his hard face there was
a character. She had guts to stick up to him the way she did, he believed
Shakti admired that. They had bumped into Ananya yet again in the early hours
of the morning passing by the DX garage. She appeared unusually timid before
Shakti and Samar learned it was because she'd wanted to apologise for being so
short with him during their last encounter. Shakti unsurprisingly didn't beat
about the bush like her though.
'I know why you keep coming back. You like me.'
He'd told her candidly.
She'd looked defensive and flushed furiously at
his brusqueness.
'I don't know about that, I just need some
closure because I feel we got off on the wrong foot. But I sure could use your
help, I mean for the carnival fundraiser that's coming up...they say you are a good
at horse riding'. He'd shaken his head
and sneered.
'Yeh? Look babe, I'm my own boss, I answer to no
one.'
Ananya's face had brightened then, maybe she saw
an opening to steer him into it 'You won't have to, you only need... '
'You don't get it do you?' He'd snarled cutting
her short and drawing closer to her till he loomed threateningly over her.
'I don't do favours, least of all for some Soc
girl like you.' He had edged closer slowly brushing his fingers up and down her
cheek.
'Survival, that's what I'm
good at, in this derelict doom of a life...my only ambition' He'd muttered darkly
gaging her reaction before tracing her lips with his thumb. She'd winced as he'd
closed in on her but he pulled her roughly by her waist to him. She'd tried to
fight him but it only brought him closer.
'You know what, I hate people like you. You
think you can change the world, make it a better place.' He was breathing heavy,
his mouth hovering dangerously near hers till their lips were brushing.
'You know what?' She replied, 'Your careless
and reckless attitude is going to destroy you someday, you'll only push people
further and further away from you.' She gasped turning her face away again probably
unable to bear the intense proximity as he persisted edging closer and closer.
I'm already on that path babe
and I can bring you down with me too'. He whispered threateningly meeting her eyes as she tried
to in vain, prise his hands away from her waist. Samar swore they were on the brink of a kiss
but by then Shakti did something that caught all of them off guard. He'd
whispered something into her ear and had pushed her back rather harshly before
turning his back on her leaving her heaving with fury. She didn't let him get
the last word however and so she stood before him and slapped him across the
face. He grew scared for her then as he watched Shakti slowly turning to face
her, a lusty gleam in his eyes. Before he could do anything Amar had appeared
and was holding him back. Ananya had stormed away angry tears falling down her
face. Shakti had wanted to punch Amar for stopping him but Amar was already
nursing a wound he picked up recently from a tussle with some crazed up Soc so
he simply picked up a baton to vandalise the car he had been fixing then left
him to deal with the wreckage.
Samar wondered why she had come back...surely she
knew by now how he was, she was smart enough to know she couldn't change him. He
suspected there was some darker part in her that probably wanted to be part of
the destructive nature that existed in Shakti. Maybe Shakti's savage disregard
for the world actually attracted her to him, some girls were into dangerous
reckless rebel types but Samar never considered her of all girls to dig that,
he assumed she was smart to know what she'd be getting into, he assumed she
liked the romantic types- how could anyone be attracted by that? As for Shakti,
he couldn't love anyone. He lived only for himself, at least he kept telling
himself that. It was what kept him going. Self-preservation had hardened him
beyond caring, it'd be a miracle if he could love anyone least of all a girl.
He cared for the gang sure enough but anyone outside that circle was dead to
him. Shakti had seen too much in his young age, he was abandoned from a very
impressionable age Samar couldn't blame him for all the resentment he had in
him. Ananya could never understand that, she was well guarded in her soc
lifestyle, from all the horrors and miseries that only a greaser knew.
'So you knifed that son of a gun, nice one'. Samar came out of his reverie at the sound of Shakti's voice. He was grinning looking at Arjun with newfound pride. All the whileArjun was describing what had gone down between them and Rajbir,Shakti had looked at them indifferently not batting an eye.
'We figured you could help us out if anyone
could, I'm sorry we got you away from the party' Arjun said innocently.
'Nah shoot kid, I was in the bedroom' Samar
blushed recalling what usually went on in the bedroom at such parties and Shakti
grinned in amused realisation.
'It wasn't anything like that kid, I just
needed a place to lay down, had a run in with some socs, cracked a rib or two.
Look at you beh, are you wet?'
Samar nodded shuddering against the cold air,
unable to find his voice.
'Geez son, get yourself inside quick'. He led them
through the main room and up some stairs half dragging Samar up while throwing
some curses his way. Samar followed passively watching the people around him
throwing them curious looks. They entered an empty bedroom. Shakti shut the door and curtains and flicked on the switch.
'Take off your shirt'. Samar did as he bid as
Shakti chucked a towel his way.
'At least Arjun got his jeans jacket, you ought to
know better than to run away in just a shirt. Don't you
ever use your head? Come on then dry off, make yourself warm.' He sounded just
like Adharsh then so much so that Samar simply stared at him as he disappeared
from the room to fetch something. Arjun laid back on the bed.
'I could do with a cigarette or something...' Shakti
returned in a minute. He shut the door and handed them a gun, a roll of bills
and some worn brown leather jackets and clothing.
'Here, it's loaded, don't point that thing at
me beh' he said addressing Arjun. Here's 50 bucks, bets placed on my horse,
you're lucky I won last night.' Arjun and Samar looked at it with dazed expressions.
' Listen
carefully' He continued sitting down beside them. 'Pop the 3.15am freight train
and take the last stop, should take you on the outskirts, there's an old
abandoned church on the hill, buy a week's supply of food as soon as you get
there, and don't so much as stick your noses outside the door. I'll be up there
soon as I think it's clear, got it?'
'Yeh' Arjun said unquestioningly.
Samar was shaking unable to comprehend what was
going on nor stop the flow of tears running down his face. He felt like he was
drifting away, watching all that was going on from a distance. This is happening. Arjun, soft spoken
Arjun had killed someone. They were
really going to do this, run away from Begusarai with the cops on their tail
and a loaded gun by their side. This
really is happening.
'Boy I ain't itching to be the one to tell
Adharsh about this' Shakti said rubbing his neck. He turned to face Samar at the sound of his sniffing and sat next to him drawing his arm around him reassuringly. He felt stupid while crying before Shakti but was thankful to have him regardless. Adarsh and Garv felt so far away from him now.
'Come
on buddy, you'll be fine, here wear this shirt, it's a size too big most like
but it'll do.' Samar yanked it over his head and wiped his tears with one arm while
Shakti continued to talk; 'Man, and I thought the city was the only place I
could get mixed up in a murder wrap'. At the word murder, Arjun made a small whimper
in the back of his throat.
'Get going' He commanded.
'Thanks Shakti' Arjun said.
'Yeh thanks Shakti.' Stammered Samar through chattered
teeth. He pressed Samar's shoulder reassuringly and escorted the boys through
the back door.
'Take care kids'. He said softly.
