Chapter-36

As the sun moved downwards, the sky was filled with various shades of blue. Anirudh headed towards his haveli with a sweet smile as he looked towards the two small bags, "Luckily I know what Bondita likes! I have to hide it anyhow! How about telling Shashwati and Batuk regarding this?! They will also have another chance to talk to their friends! Because of Baba nowadays they hesitate to meet them....." he murmured to himself as his tone turned lower.

Anirudh sneaked into the kitchen and hid it in a big bowl, "Neither Kaka nor Baba comes to the kitchen so no worries!" "But I have seen it!" said Batuk with a smirk which made Anirudh turn towards him. Batuk moved his brows up and down and asked, "What are you hiding Dada?" "Well not from you but only from Baba and Kaka, don't tell them!" "Ok ok but what's the secret?!" "Today is Bondita's birthday so I think you have a chance to meet Shekhar without any hesitation!" "To be honest I sometimes go to meet him secretly..." "Oh, I am glad that you don't consider them as inferior! So this is the secret! Just tell Shashwati and not to anyone else, okay?" said Anirudh to which Batuk kept his finger on his lips with a smile.

Bondita continued to scribble on her diary as the moonlight fell on the paper. She suddenly felt someone blindfolding her from behind, "Huh!!! Who are you?!" "I am thief! Okay?! " "Oh Dada! I didn't know that you saw yourself as a thief!" replied Bondita with a mischievous smile, "Quickly come with me stupid! Now don't start your teasing again!" "But where are we going?" "You will yourself get to know it!".

Bondita felt the night breeze caressing her hair as she climbed the stairs. Curiousity and excitement had occupied her mind due to which she couldn't stop smiling. Shekhar made her sit on a mattress and untied the cloth. Just as she opened her eyes and blinked a few times her eyes had gone wide at the sight of a cake kept infront of her and her friend, sisters and brothers sitting infront of her with a smile. Mauri and Shashwati smiled widely and shouted, "Happy Birthday Didi!" "Happy Birthday Bondita!" greeted Batuk, Shekhar and Anirudh together, "Eh? Today is my birthday?" asked Bondita with a lost expression on her face which made everyone twist their brows.

After some moments of silence Anirudh said, "Yes Bondita, today is your birthday! Don't you know it?" "Ah...I..." "Uff! How can you forget such an important day in your life?!" "I didn't forget my birthdate Dada! I know my birthday is on 22nd May! I just forgot today's date!" "Don't you always see the calendar?!" "Today I forgot to...." she replied which made him held his forehead, "Ah, no worries! This is good for me only as I didn't expect it! This was a huge surprise! Good for you all too!" said Bondita with a sheepish smile while Anirudh shook his head with a smile.

Bondita was guided to cut the cake and was asked to blow the candle, "I don't want to..." "Why?" "The flame looks pretty Birristra Babu! I don't want to take its beauty away!" replied Bondita to which Anirudh chuckled. Shekhar took away the candle and blew it himself, "If you won't I will!" he replied after which Bondita puffed her cheeks. Shekhar told Batuk to sit with him and forwarded his hand, holding her gift, "What's this?" "A mask which will suit you!" "Oh...a monster's mask?!!" exclaimed Bondita with a frown while Shekhar and Batuk laughed at her, "I hope you will like it Bondita! We both made it for you with so much hardwork!" said Shekhar as he winked at Batuk.

Just as he turned his face towards Bondita his laugh stopped and his eyes had gone wide by seeing Bondita's masked face facing towards him but her back body was facing him, "Huh!!!". Bondita turned towards him with a mischievous smile and said, "Yes!! I am successful in my attempt! So I can use this mask to scare you at night!" "Of course not!" growled Shekhar with a frown while Anirudh laughed at the them, "You are indeed very clever Bondita!" complimented Anirudh after which she looked towards him as she blinked a few times and then smirked at her Dada who was still frowning at her.

Shashwati garlanded her with a garland made up of colourful papers while Mauri garlanded her with a garland made up from her some shells, "How is it Didi?" "It's very beautiful Mauri and Shashwati! I love it!" said Bondita happily after which both of them smiled at each other. Anirudh smiled at Bondita and cleared his throat, "Ahem! Now it's my turn! I hope you like my gift Bondita!" he said as he gave her a box wrapped with beautiful papers. She excitedly teared the paper and opened the box to see a binoculars and a medium sized art book kept inside it! Her eyes just froze there as they glowed, "Bondita? Do you like it?" asked Anirudh who was a bit confused by her reaction.

Bondita quickly got up with the garlands hanging around her neck and the mask on her head and looked around through the glasses of the binoculars. She was amazed to see the buildings and the trees with such a closer look that she almost jumped in happiness. For sometime she was busy in glancing around with a grin while Anirudh smiled at her innocence. Suddenly he heard her stomach grumbling after which he headed towards her with a bowl of rasmalais and said, "Looks like you are very happy to get this! Open your mouth Bondita!". Bondita opened her mouth wide not even willing to keep her binoculars down. Anirudh fed her a small piece of rasmalai after which Bondita's eyes went wide and she exclaimed, "You fed me rasmalai Birristra Babu?! How do you know I like them?!" "Yes! You only told me earlier Bondita!" "Oh yes! I forgot it! Nowadays I am having short-term memory loss!" said Bondita as she gently hit her head while Anirudh laughed. They both glanced around, finding joy in the voices of nature as if she was wishing Bondita too! Bondita tried to look at the stars and said, "I wish I could look at them more closely..." "You can Bondita! I have a telescope here too!" "This means Birristra Babu you too like to watch stars and various distant objects?!" "Yes! I am also very curious regarding them just like you Bondita! That's why my Baba bought this for me!" "Well does your Baba know that I am here?" "No, if I tell him he will again taunt you regarding this!" "So how did I came here?!" "Actually you came here by climbing the backside stairs which is used very less!" "Oh, let's watch the stars now!" said Bondita excitedly as she followed him.

He adjusted it's angle and told Bondita to see through its glass. Bondita could see the stars more closely and was astonished to see the craters on the moon, "Birristra Babu, does the moon shine on its own?!" "No Bondita, it actually reflects the light of the sun just like our earth does!" "Oh! This is why the moon looks happy due to the sunlight!" "Hmm! Its shine brought glory in the Moon's life!" "Wow Barrister Babu! Thanks for an idea!" said Shekhar suddenly as he started scribbling on his diary, "Ah, for what idea Shekhar?" "Dada has got an idea to surely write another poem!" "That's nice!".

"Do you love writing diary always?!" "Yes!" "Doesn't it bore you?" "No, I enjoy writing!" "Oh, my hands become extremely lazy when I have to write something.." "And during eating?" "It becomes vigorously active!" replied Batuk with a smirk to which Shekhar laughed wholeheartedly.

"Huh, I am tired now Shashwati! This swing is quite difficult to move!" "Yes Mauri! But it was fun though! Let's look down roof!" said Shashwati to which Mauri nodded and both of them looked down, a bit scared of the height though.

Bondita sat on the swing to check if it was really difficult to move, "Hmm, you have to apply a bit more force to move this swing forward! Mmm! This is moving only a bit!" "Oh, I should also check it then!" said Anirudh as he too sat on the swing, beside her. He sat tightly and moved the swing forward by using his legs, "Hmm, this swing is quite heavy that's why it needs more force!" "It's really fun Birristra Babu! I think you should apply all your force now as you move forward! And then....." stopped Bondita just as Anirudh moved the swing forward, "Leave your feet free!" she finished saying after which Anirudh pushed the ground hard, his feet totally free in the air as they both moved backwards and forwards, without applying anymore strength! "Birristra Babu! It's really fun!" "Yes! Your idea worked perfectly!" "Only when you applied it right!" she said excitedly as they both grinned.

"Birristra Babu!" "Yes Bondita?" "What do these stars make you remember of?!" "These stars...they make me remember of my dreams! My purpose in life!" "Does everyone has certain purpose in their lives?!" "I think yes! Everyone is born in this world with a purpose as life is meaningless without any purpose! I have found my purpose! Do you know what's your purpose Bondita?!" "Mmm, no Birristra Babu..I also want to know it but...do you know it?" "Well nobody can tell you your own purpose Bondita! Only you can! Take time to figure it out!" "Hmm" "What about rest of you?!" "Dada I want to be a landlord!" "Me too!" "Well Shashwati I told you even earlier that landlords are only men! Why don't you understand this?!" "No Batuk! Works have no gender! Anybody can do any work if they really want to!" "This means I can?!" "Of course Shashwati! After becoming mature and sensible you can do whatever you want! Nobody can stop you!" said Anirudh after which Shashwati nodded with a grin.

Bondita smiled at them and said, "Even if I don't know my purpose properly I just want to help everyone! I want to fight for the innocents! This is what makes me happy!". Anirudh looked towards her with amazement and a soft smile appeared on his face, how did she always manage to amaze him by her thoughts' process and actions?! She seemed to be very different from the people he met earlier! There was a different light shining out from her which was quite mysterious yet interesting!

Shekhar took a deep breath and stopped writing. He took his diary in his hands and started reading:

"Aakasher nodite bhashe onek tara guli!

("Many stars float in the sky's river!)

Taarar chomkano dake aamare baar baar!

(Their shine call me continuously!)

Mone onek proshno niye beriye jayi ami!

(I go outside with many questions inside my mind!)

Chokh boro hoye, mukhe hashi uthe amar!

(Eyes widen, a smile appear on my face!)

Kacher moddho diye dekhi ami taara dujon kei!

(Through the glass (telescope's) I see both of them!)

Shurjor alo mukhe pore jaye taar!

(The sun's light fall on his (moon's) face!)

Dariye dekhi ami taarar shundor mitali!

(As I stand I watch their beautiful friendship!)

Bhabi jodi hoto emon bondhu amar!"

(I think if I had such friend!")

"Phew! Finally it's done! So, how was it?!" asked Shekhar with curiousity after which everyone clapped for him with a grin, "You are really amazing Shekhar! This poem really touched me!" complemented Batuk to which Shekhar grinned and looked down as a bit shyness reached his face.

Chapter-36

As the sun rose providing some amount of warmth around, Saurabh exchanged glances with Sampoorna and they both headed towards their parents, "Maa-Baba.." "Yes Saurabh?" "I... actually want to tell you something" said Saurabh after which his parents glanced at them and asked, "Hmm, quickly tell!" "A-Actually, I want to go to take Sampoorna to Calcutta!" said Saurabh with some more courage after which his parents looked towards each other and then towards him for sometime.

Saurabh looked down wondering if they will shout at him after sometime while Sampoorna fidgeted with her shakha-pola. His father looked downwards and said, "Ok Saurabh, you can go....". Saurabh and Sampoorna quickly looked towards them as their eyes went wide. Did their father just say yes?! "....but only after she gives birth to a child!" continued his father which drained colours from their faces, "Baba if Sampoorna gets pregnant now she won't be able to give time to singing!" "And when will she take our generation ahead?! I already told you that you both can go only after she gives birth to a child!" "But Baba, did you noticed that nowadays everyone has come to appreciate her singing! Some were even saying that she should have been a singer!" said Saurabh, trying his best to convince his parents.

His father just rolled his eyes and said, "I can see that my Bou can sing very well! But still! I won't allow!" "Why are you becoming so stubborn Baba?!" "Just like you Saurabh! After all I am your father!" he replied sternly after which he went away while Saurabh sighed. Sampoorna touched his shoulder and asked, "Now what will you do?" "Hmm, we have to find a way! Let me think regarding this....Well Sampoorna! Come! Let me leave you there for your daily practice!" said Saurabh with a smile to which she nodded.

"Bondita!! Bondita?!" "Yes Birristra Babu!! I am coming!!" shouted Bondita as she quickly ran outside of her room after combing her hair, "Let's go Birristra Babu!" "Hmm! Come Mauri and Shekhar!" said Anirudh with a soft smile after which all of them went downstairs. "Anirudh!!" called a voice which made him look towards the direction of the voice, "Oh Mini! Seeing you again quite after few weeks!! Where were you in these days?!" "Looking for a good job! I have to also earn money after all I am fully educated and have a degree too!" replied Saudamini with her earlier pride, "Hmm, surely Dida told you to work rather than just reading novels!" "Ah...Dida also told me but I also wanted to work that's why I agreed! You see, you can take a horse towards a tray of water but you can never make him drink it!" she replied with a sheepish smile to which Anirudh sighed and said, "Ok then, we are going!" "Where are you all going?!" "To buy school uniform, books and notebooks and bag for us Mini Didi! After all we will go to the school after some days!!" replied Bondita with a grin which brought a smile on Anirudh's face, "Hmm, can I also come with you all?!" "No need to ask Mini, maybe in some situations we will need you! Come with us!" "This means you also agree that I am helpful! Thanks for the praise Anirudh!" said Mini with a smile as she walked beside them.

As they walked ahead they noticed so many crowds ahead them that Anirudh forwarded his hand towards Bondita and said, "Hold my hand Bondita! As this place is quite crowded you may get lost!". Bondita nodded to him after which she held his hand and walked with him. Shekhar held his little sister's hand and said, "Let's go Mauri! You also won't get lost!" "But I can walk through the crowds Dada! I am not that little!" "But still! You can get lost as you can see the way some people are pushing each other on their way" "Hmm, okay" agreed Mauri with a soft smile after which Shekhar made sure that they were beside Barrister Babu and Bondita.

A man spat out the chewed betel leaves on the road as he looked towards them from behind , "Just look at them! That man surely thinks very high of himself! That's why he's holding that young girl's hand without any fear! Also the girl is not even hesitating to commit this sin! I have to quickly report regarding this to the police officer!" he decided after which he increased his pace and walked away.

As they reached their destination Bondita and her siblings' eyes went wide at the sight of the huge school, "Oh my! This building is very huge Birristra Babu! So this is our school?!" "Yes Bondita! You will study, play and learn many things in this school! You will also make new friends here! You will surely love it!" "But there will be only boys there...." said Mauri sadly to which Anirudh replied, "So what Mauri? Can't boys become a girl's friends too?!" "But I never had a male friend!" "It's ok! You will surely make one there!" "Hmm" "If we will study in a building where will we play? I mean games can only be played in an open area!" "There's a playground inside the school Shekhar! It's very big! I still remember that day when I tried to take about seven rounds around the ground but I fell in between as I got extremely tired!" said Anirudh as he chuckled, "But why did you think to take seven rounds Birristra Babu?!" "Actually Bondita as a child if someone underestimated me regarding anything I used to try my best to prove that person wrong....." "You are like this even now, nothing new...." said Soudamini as she rolled her eyes with a chuckle, "Now I act like this only when needed Mini, people think I am just a crazy man who is doing whatever he thinks, not realizing that he is doing something for their good!" said Anirudh as his tone sounded a bit serious.

Mini started to think if she said anything wrong and became numb. Bondita sensed the conversation to suddenly take an unnecessary serious turn due to which she said, "Ah Birristra Babu! We shouldn't care what people think about us, not everyone understands what is right or wrong, right?" "You are right Bondita, we should let go off these thoughts, I shouldn't make my mood bad regarding this...." he said as he heavily sighed to which Bondita smiled softly. He continued, "..so as I had this attitude some boys mocked me that I couldn't do it therefore I took the seven rounds and proved them wrong! How silly I was though!" said Anirudh as he laughed at his childhood memories, "But your silliness really made you cross your own limits Birristra Babu! Same happened with me also! Some boys used to tease me that I couldn't swim as I was a girl but I closed their mouths by swimming very fast! I literally crossed my limits! We should thank them though!" "Why?!" "Because of them we have become better than before and crushed their ego!" said Bondita with a laugh as she and Anirudh held each other's hands and laughed together, "That's exactly what you say!".

Mini just looked at them wide eyed and murmured, "In such short time they have become very good friends! Also the way Bondita manipulated the conversation, very smart!".

They bought books for fifth, eight and tenth standard after which they bought their respective uniforms. After roaming around the school they greeted the principal and walked outside. Soudamini also bought brassieres for Mauri and Bondita which was obviously new to them. As they walked down the streets, tightly holding each other's hands, Anirudh told Bondita and her siblings regarding some school manners, "So whenever you want to go anywhere or you know the answer just put your hand up in the class! Also..." stopped Anirudh as he felt someone hitting them with a rod on their entangled fingers, "Aah!" yelped Bondita in pain as they both separated their hands.

They noticed a police officer and a man standing behind them with a stern expression after which the people passing by stopped around them. Anirudh and Bondita exchanged glances with a confused look while Mauri, Shekhar and Soudamini just stood numb as their brows furrowed.

"Why did you hit us?" "First you do something inappropriate in front of everyone and then question me?!" "What did I do that's inappropriate?!" "You held a girl's hand to whom you aren't even related! Neither you are her husband, father nor her brother! But still you dared to?! Looks like you are very eager to get arrested!" "Arrest me?! I didn't even commit any crime to get arrested! Also I just held her hand so that she doesn't gets lost in the crowd! And regarding any relation! I am her friend and her teacher! So how am I not related to her?!" asked Anirudh sternly as he twisted his brows.

The officer laughed at his words as if it was a mere joke , "Oh, you are her friend?! In which world are you living Mister?! Don't you know what happens here?! Don't you know that a boy and a girl can never become friends?! Huh? I understand. You think you are a Barrister so you can change all the rules here, huh? Even this girl is shameless who didn't hesitate to pull her hand from yours!" he said as he glared at Bondita.

"HEY!! HOW DO YOU EVEN DARE TO CALL BONDITA SHAMELESS?!" shouted Anirudh as his anger took control over his whole system, "DON'T YOU EVEN DARE TO SCARE HER!! JUST BECAUSE SHE HELD MY HAND?! DID SHE HURT ME BY HOLDING MY HAND?! ALSO IF SHE GOT LOST THEN WOULD YOU HAVE LOOKED FOR HER?!.....WHEN A MAN UNNECESSARILY HITS HIS WIFE IN FRONT OF EVERYONE JUST TO SATISFY HIS EGO THEN NOBODY COMES FORWARD TO STOP HIM, THEY SAY IT'S THEIR MATTER SO IT'S BETTER TO IGNORE IT!! BUT WHEN TWO FRIENDS HOLD EACH OTHER'S HANDS THEN THIS BOILS EVERYONE'S BLOOD!! EVERYONE STARTS TO CURSE THEM!! ISN'T THIS TOTALLY OPPOSITE OF WHAT SHOULD BE DONE?! DO YOU EVEN WANT A FEMALE TO STAY HAPPY?! THEN WHERE ARE YOU OFFICER?!! WHEN THIS INJUSTICE OFTEN TAKES PLACE?! SUCH A HYPOCRITE YOU ARE!! ARE YOU EVEN ON THE SIDE OF THE JUSTICE?!" "You dare to teach me justice?!!" "I DARED CAUSE I AM A BARRISTER!! AND YOU ARE IN NEED OF THIS!!" shouted Anirudh as he frowned at him. Bondita's eyes went wide as she witnessed a totally different avatar of Anirudh! Though his this avatar was quite scary to her but his voice against injustice never failed to amaze her! She just began to admire him more as a result she gently clapped with a smile.

The man glared at Anirudh and said, "Hey! You dare to talk back to a police officer?!" "I DARED CAUSE HE IS WRONG!! AND I WILL NEVER STOP MYSELF TO DO SO!!" shouted Anirudh as he glared back at him which did nearly scare the man.

"Isn't this Anirudh's voice?" asked Trilochan as he got up from his chair, "It can be Malik! You already know Chhote Malik's temper..." "Hmm, let's go Bihari!" said Trilochan as he walked outside with his cane stick while Bihari followed him.

Just as Trilochan reached there he saw people swarming in the middle of the street. He gently pushed some men aside and saw Anirudh arguing with a police officer. He facepalmed as he whispered, "This Anirudh! Why is he creating a scene here?! Also! Bondita and her siblings and Soudamini are also standing there! What's happening here?!".

"This fight doesn't seems to end Didi, do something!" "I can't do anything Mauri, wait! Zamindar Kaka is there! Zamindar Kaka!" Bondita called Trilochan softly as she told him to do something through her sign language. Trilochan slowly nodded to her and walked towards them quickly, "Anirudh and the police officer! Please stop fighting here! You both are creating a scene in between the street!" he said which made both of them turn towards him, "Zamindar Babu please tell your nephew to kindly follow the given society rules!" "What did Anirudh do?" "He held this girl's hand even if she wasn't related to him" "Hmm, I understand your concern officer. At the day of celebrating Boishak I let you do whatever you wanted Anirudh but now you have to follow the rules too! Apologize to the officer and promise that you will never hold Bondita's hand!" said Trilochan which made Bondita facepalm, "I know that Zamindar Kaka is also wrong here but this fight needs to end!" "I won't apologize to him Kaka, I did nothing wrong! If he wants to arrest me regarding this then I don't care! I just held her hand so that she doesn't gets lost in the crowd! But this officer is creating an unnecessary scene here!" "But it's not good to hold a girl's hand in front of everyone Anirudh! Try to understand this!" "Why Kaka? When I held Saurabh's hand nobody said a thing! When Mini held her female friend's hand then also nobody said a word! Then why are they suddenly reacting when I held Bondita's hand? All are friends but only different by gender! In London there were no such rules! Why only in our society?!" "Looks like your nephew is influenced by the foreign culture Zamindar Babu! Mister this is not London so do kindly follow this place's rules!".

"Birristra Babu!" Bondita called him softly which made him face her, "No use of arguing with him! Let's return back!" "Hmm" agreed Anirudh as he slowly nodded after which he frowned at the officer and walked away after which everyone dispersed.

Anirudh rushed inside his house as he looked at his watch, "Listen Anirudh!" "What happened now Kaka?" "Please let go off your stubbornness to change the rules! You have to yourself understand that a man and a woman can never be equal!" "Who says that?!" "It's written in our scriptures Anirudh! Do you think they can be wrong?! They themselves say that man and woman can never be equal!" "But I didn't read such in Bhagwat Geeta Kaka! It was clearly written that we are the soul and that's why everyone is equal!" "But it's the rules Anirudh! We need to follow them!" "Rules made by men can be changed Kaka but the laws of nature which are made by God himself always remains constant!" argued Anirudh back after which Trilochan held his forehead and said, "It's completely useless to explain anything to you! I can't always explain the same things for the lifetime Anirudh! Do whatever you want! Bihari! Bring the massage oil! My head is paining!" "Yes Malik!" agreed Bihari as he followed his master.

Anirudh took the study books in his hands for their regular classes, "I wonder...in which scripture is it written?! Bhagwat Geeta is saying something else and that scripture is saying completely opposite! Which scripture is Kaka referring to?" he asked himself as he headed towards Bondita's house.

Sampoorna kept their clothes over a bedsheet after which she tied it, "Do you think this is a good idea? We should rather try our best to make them agree!" "I can't see another way left rather than this Sampoorna, Maa-Baba aren't listening to us! We have to leave from here!" "Hmm" "Let's go!" whispered Saurabh as he and Sampoorna tiptoed outside the room with their clothes while their parents slept.
