Sharad took the children to a park near by. Sagar was running around with his ball and Sanvi toddled behind her brother barely managing to keep balance. Sharad stared at them with a blank eye and sighed deeply.
These two angel like babies are going to lose their father soon and Amar wishes that I step into his role. How is that possible? Yes I do love them with all my heart, but this is a big task! I can't marry Divya Amar! It took me a long while to figure this out. Honestly I never loved her, the only person I have ever loved was Sarah!
I was so lonely at that time when I proposed to her and I sought out a friend in her more than a wife! I would never be able to give her what she deserves, unconditional and irrevocable love—which you gave her.
Oh! I am so confused! How can I not keep my best friend's -my brother's last wish? But my heart doesn't agree to this at all. You know Amar I would do anything for you but your last request is one impossible one, it's beyond me. But I promise you, I will take care of Sagar and Sanvi as they were my own. Well, they are my own, they are named after me! A pained smile donned his face!
"Sharad, is that you?" a voice he would recognize any where any time brought him back from his reverie; he was completely lost in his thoughts. He looked up and to his utter surprise Sarah, the real Sarah was standing in front of him cradling Sanvi. He was so taken aback, he was totally lost for words. It is her, right? She hadn't changed at all, breathtakingly beautiful as ever.
She smiled at his silence. "Your daughter is adorable" she pinched Sanvi's face and continued, "and very brave too. She fell down but didn't cry at all." And looked toward Sanvi and said in a cuddling tone, "Aren't you the cutest baby ever!"
Sharad took Sanvi from Sarah and sighed "Its been so long." Sarah must have felt a little awkward because she didn't respond. Well it wasn't a question either.
"How are you Sharad? I am happy that you moved on in your life. Where is your wife? Do you live in DC now? When did you get married?"
Before Sharad could interrupt the barrage of Sarah's questions and respond to some, Sagar came bouncing towards them. "Sharad uncle, Sharad Uncle, we need to go home. Now. Mommy will be back soon. May be dad would come back from the hospital today. Lets go! Please"
Sarah looked at the adorable little boy and toward Sharad with questioning look in her eyes but she didn't say anything. Sharad suddenly felt panicked. He realized it was getting dark and he should take the kids back home but he didn't want to lose Sarah again.
An urgency took over him. "Sarah, you remember Amar and Divya from high school right?" Sarah was a little surprised with the abrupt question but more so for the desperateness in his voice. Seeing the nod of recognition from her, he added, "Sagar and Sanvi are their children and it is a long story. Would you please come with me while I drop them home and afterwards we might get something to eat? Please Sarah? Please?"
--------
Amar, please don't go! Amar! But he didn't stop or look back and vanished into the dark! She was all sweaty and scared, she put her head down between her knees which she clasped tightly close to her chest. Her heartrending sobs took over her. She cried silently for who knows how long. All of sudden Amar came back and scooped her off and took her to the rocking chair at the corner of the room and sat holding her on his lap and started rocking back and forth.
She opened her eyes at that moment; sun was rising, ushering a new day. She remembered her bitter-sweet dream. A deep sigh left her from the depth of her heart. She realized her subconscious was making her ready to face the inevitable. It's been almost a month and soon she needed to make a decision to withdraw life-support and let Amar travel to the next world. She had to live a life clinging on to memories, be strong for her children and for herself too. She was sure of one thing, what they had together was sacred and she could never ever share even a tiny fragment of her heart with anyone—never ever.
She got up, said her silent prayers, checked on two sleeping angels of hers, tucked them properly under their respective quilts and started getting ready for the hospital.
She went downstairs and made some coffee. Amar loved her coffee. He used to joke how her love mixed in morning's coffee ran through his veins the rest of the day and made him function. She sat at their kitchen table and started going through the mails. She found a thick brown letter from their lawyer. Her heart missed a bit. Does it have a letter from Amar? He said he would write again.
With trembling hands she opened the letter, got a papercut on her index finger as a result of her haste. She sucked the finger and opened the letter. There were a lot of documents, Amar's will, transfer of property forms and many others. And there was a chalk white envelope, with her name written on it. She would recognize the hand writing from a mile away! She sat still, tracing her name on top of the envelope! Slowly she opened the letter with much care and love.
Yay you updated!
Aww poor Sharad. I feel so bad for him...he loves Sarah but Amar's put him in a tought spot. And after so many years he finally meets his love under these cirumstances. I feel so bad for Sagar and Sanvi...And for Divya as well. I'm guessing the letter is about how Amar wants Divya to marry Sharad...I wonder how she'll react to that.
Nishi - wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, update 👍🏼! So very touching - tho' sad as well.
Ah poor Sharad - caught between two loves - that of his friend and the woman he loves. Hopefully, there will be a way for him to fulfill Amar's wishes w/out having to give up his own love Sarah. 😔
