Hey guys, our hero, Prashant's birthday is March 31 😊 Let's keep this club rocking😆
The actor who almost didn't work in Chhal For Prashant Narayanan, working on the big screen was an achievement |
Prashant springs another surprise. He plans to cut an album with guitarist Arijeet Dutta. "We have 45 songs already. By January 2003, I would like to release my Indipop album." Incidentally, the name of his band is PCO (short for Public Call Office) so that 'every time you look at a PCO, you should think of us!'
Wow, very different and clean cut look. Both suit him well. Thanks Ammoos😊
Prashant Narayanan recently had two releases; Summer 2007 and Via Darjeeling . Be it the spoilt zamindar's son in Summer 2007 or the Bengali Kaushik Chatterjee from Via Darjeeling , Prashant lived up to the characters with elegance. "I wish I had a zamindari background. Then I would not need to act", said Prashant laughingly. Speaking about his character in Summer 2007 Prashant said, "It was an interesting part. I am associated with Atul and Sohail since television days. They thought that I fit the bill correctly." Talking about his character in Via Darjeeling Prashant said, "It actually depends on what kind of feeding I get from the director. I have no intentions to go to America to learn filmmaking. It was just good acting and nothing else." Prashant had to put on weight as well for these roles. "I did put on weight for Summer 2007 . Then I did something else and had to lose weight. After that I did Via Darjeeling for which I had to again put on weight. I did that primarily because I could be more convincing as far as what I felt about the character. Both my characters were easy about life. I did not want to show myself as a body builder in Summer 2007 . I keep losing and gaining weight all the time", said Prashant. Speaking about his future projects Prashant said, "I will be seen in Kaizad Gustad's Bombil and Beatrice , Pravez Bharadwaj's Mr Singh Mrs Mehta , The White Elephant and Ketan Mehta's Rang Rasiya . Apart from acting, I am also in the middle of cutting a music album." |
Prashant Narayanan is a believer in destiny. He was very clear in his mind that he would never get into acting. He moved to Bombay to make it big as a producer. So everything he did was to avoid getting into acting, he tried art direction, costume design and even directed a play. As luck would have he was pursued for a role in the Indian soap opera Parivartan. A very reluctant Prashant accepted and it changed the very course of his life. Still remembered for the character he played, Prashant has spent almost a decade in the television industry and has appeared in some of the most popular shows on television, most recently as 'Sumer' in the soap titled 'Shagun' on Star Plus. The reluctant actor was in Toronto with Florian Gallenberger's 'Shadows of Time' which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival 2004. It was yet another turn of destiny that this Keralite was casted for the lead role in a Bengali film made by a German! Prashant speaks with Preeti Thandi for MyBindi about his turn of fortunes:
How did you get the role of Ravi Gupta in 'Shadows of Time'?
They had seen 'Chal', my first film. Florian saw something interesting. He called me and I didn't quite believe it. Later we had a meeting and a screen test. At that time I had a beard so they got to do everything as far as the looks are concerned. They liked me.
Of course I believe in destiny. Isn't it a strange thing that a German film maker is making a Bangla film and takes a Keralite as a hero! They selected me after they checked out the whole of India. For the part of the younger Ravi they auditioned 6,700 children. Finally they spotted him crossing the road. The younger Ravi has done a fantastic job.
How did you prepare for the role?
I had just finished doing the film 'Waisa bhi hota hai'. I had to physically remove 12 kgs. out of my life. I also had to learn Bangla but I didn't want to be extremely good in Bangla. The boy I play is from Bihar so he doesn't speak Bengali that well.
What was it like working with Florian, was it a challenge working with a German director?
It was not just working with Florian but working with an entire German unit. It was completely planned and organized. If we had any problem it was solved immediately. The entire crew was very cooperative whether it was costume, make-up or production. Everyone was putting in extra to make sure that Florian was happy. We had good vibes and communication, we pampered each other. Ultimately we were confident that we would make a good film and we did.
Even though Ravi loves Masha dearly he doesn't do anything to change their fate, why?
This is what the Indian 'namak' (salt) is all about. The wonderful thing about the script is that Florian has captured an Indian way of thinking. Ultimately another woman is your wife, whatever you do is a loss. While sharing an intimate moment, Ravi even says to Masha if you had waited for 10 seconds life would have been something else… that is the tragedy of the film. Ravi is completely in love with Masha and she is completely in love with him. If he would have done something then what would be the tragedy of the film?
What kind of response did you get at the public screenings of the film at the Toronto International Film Festival?
It was a very strange experience. I am just used to Indian audiences going gaga over me. But after the screening I got a standing ovation and when Florian called me up on stage to introduce me to the audience, people went berserk. It felt very nice. I was asked how I managed to show so much poverty in the film? I told them (jokingly) that when I started off in Bombay I was extremely poor and so it wasn't a problem! (laughs)
When you are really down and out, the kind of emotions that you have for anybody are always stronger. The whole idea behind the film is that the love story could go on for many years. The poor kids are hungry, lonely and they find love. There is an element of timelessness in the story.
What projects are you working on currently?
I am working on a film called 'Mumbai Central' with Kaizad Gustad. I am also doing a film titled 'Yatna.' It is an English film directed by Rajshree Ojha with Soha Ali Khan, Charlie Chaplin's grand daughter Kiere Chaplin, Victor Banerjee, Rupa Ganguly and Suchitra Pillai. I also love composing songs. I have a CD but though the melody is wonderful I would like to re-arrange it. I want to make my own songs and work internationally, maybe record one song in London and the other one in Germany. See that is what destiny is all about, I was really not thinking acting!
