They say art imitates life. Also the only constant factor in life is change. Habits die hard. Taking all this into consideration while viewing the larger picture it is no wonder that you find the characters of the serial vascilating just as humanbeings change and move on with the changing circumstances and needs of their lives.
The use of the phrase Choti Jati is a cruel reminder of this social evil which even today persists. May be this business of Choti Jati was only skindeep in DM's pshyche and with Santu's "genteel "presence
melted to some extent .And in Hiten's case his obvious socialistic leanings which he has amply demonstrated during his stay with Santo's people and hislove for Khemi has narrowed the divide .Love can do wonders.

@MrsDM: You so reflected my thoughts. What attracted me to this show also was the age difference along with the differences in class, caste, social status between DM and Santo and how were they going to overcome all that and fall in love. I was especially interested to see how DM was going to overcome these because they were going to be a bigger issue for him than for Santu because he had all this extra baggage i.e. his feelings for his dead wife and his guilt of betraying her if he allowed himself to feel anything for Santu, his kids, his family, etc. It seemed so different from all the other love stories on TV that are all so similar and predictable - this show had something different to offer. The age difference does not bother me because most of the time I don't even remember it when I see these two together – maybe if DM was short, fat and bald and looked his age then it would bother me :). And I feel the other stories especially Hiten-Khemi are just distractions that I so don't wanna see but am willing to put up with if only they devote more time to DM and Santu's story which it feels like they are starting to do once again going by the last two episodes - such a treat to watch these two.

As for the caste issues, these do exist in rural India in a way that I guess is very similar to what is depicted in the show -- since we live in urban India we are probably not exposed to it as much and thats why all this seems too much for us. But what I want to see and what I believe will be shown in the show is despite this whole class/caste/age/social status difference, DM is going to fall head over heels for Santu and when that happens and it will, all these things are not going to matter to him anymore and that will be something to watch. I mean DM has already come a long way from the days when he objected to Santo giving him water to wash his hands to now when he asks her to make his tea for him and that I believe is because he has started seeing Santo as the person she is and not just as a "choti jaati ki chokri" whom circumstances forced him to marry.

Still can not justify the use of the word choti jathi so much. It is not a politically correct word. I dont know about Gujarat but in south India you say it on peoples' face they dont take it. Nobody works for you if you treat your domestic help like Moti ben does it.
They say Hindi cinema and cricket keeps our nation together. Indian TV should also play the same role.I am not saying this serial is creating rift in the society but using this word so many times so casually and no strong reactions to it from any one of the characters...what message are they trying to give us?!!
They are overdoing it
