Spilling of kumkum
Though it is shown as bad omen on TV but spilling of kumkum has often been viewed as being auspicious. The colour of kumkum is red, the colour of Mars or Mangal, the planet linked to auspicious and inauspicious events. It is believed that the spilling of kumkum amounts to scattering the inauspicious influences and thus mimimising impending side effects.
Spilling of milk
Generally, the spilling of milk is considered to bring bad luck as it wastes one of the purest sources of nourishment for the family. It is also believed that evil spirits go where they can find milk spilt on the floor. Many consider the spilling of milk as a fortunate warning sign that implies "bad luck could be on its way, so protect yourself". Bad luck comes only if one ignores the sign and fails to take remedial measures to ward off ill-luck. The association of milk with the Moon, Venus, snakes, Lord Shiva and fertility gives the sign a deeper connotation, but in each of these cases too, it is a warning to take positive action.
Oil lamp peters out suddenly
The oil lamp in a Hindu puja room is more than a symbol of Surya and Agni. The flame (Jyoti) symbolising and representing the life force, wisdom (Gyanjyoti) and eternal love, is an essential form of worship. It carries man's prayer to God and penetrate the darkness both literally and figuratively.
According Dharmashastra, a misshapen flame spells poverty, a white one indicates famine, a bright red denotes war and a blackish flame is death. But a yellow flame is the harbinger of health, wealth and prosperity. Actually, the sign is a reminder to reinforce your positive energies and make efforts to sustain that light.
Black cat crosses the path
Cats have been regarded down the ages as symbols of wisdom, liberty, purity. protection but black cats are also symbols of superstition. The bad luck connection stems from the colour – black, that often signified black magic, witches and Satan in other countries while in India it is associated with malefic Shani (Saturn) and the dark night. Some people believe that when a black cat crosses your path it is a sign that your ancestors are dissatisfied and take measures accordingly.
Idol of the deity breaks
A broken idol should never be kept at home. But when the idol of a deity breaks, it doesn't necessarily bring bad luck. On the other hand, it is often taken as a sign that the deity actually acted as a shield and saved you from possible harm by taking the ill-effects on its idol.
