They used to put not so much now days in the city and even in the villages...but last time I went there was a family that had moved from region of Kaach to outside Surat and the vahus in those houses would cover there head in front of there Sashra(father-in-law and elder men), so I am guessing that in certain rural region, this tradition is still carried on. It's a sign of respect. And there are some where they have to cover there face too, I guess that is more to do with attracting unwanted attention.
